About Me:

My name is Olivia and I am a senior at Butler University. I spend most of my time in Lilly Hall as a BFA Dance Performance major. When not in rehearsal or ballet class, I write papers for my English Literature second major. In my super-abundant, never-lacking, this-is-highly-sarcastic spare time, I attempt to cook in my apartment kitchen, watch Youtube videos of ballet, knit sweaters that never seem to come to an end, and read books both silly and serious. If I could take any class at Butler just for kicks, I'd go for DiffyQ.

The Final Finals Week

I survived my last finals week of my undergraduate career! It wasn’t too bad, though I was pretty busy at the beginning of the week. The beginning of the week also marked my final Flip the Script!

Flip the Script is an event that SGA and the CPA (I think… please let me know if that’s wrong) put on during finals week. Basically, the teachers/faculty serve breakfast from 9-10 pm to the students in the Atherton cafeteria. There are usually raffles too, and this year they raffled off an iPad which my roommate really wanted to win. (But did not.) There were pancakes, hash browns, eggs, bacon, and pastries.

Battling my way through the crowds of people to get to the water cups really brings you back. I do not miss my cafeteria days — I’m so much happier not on a meal plan — but it was neat to relive the madness for a last time before graduating.

Also, the eggs were pretty good.

This year, both my English classes finished up before finals week proper began, so I wasn’t as stressed. I did study and take the huge comprehensive final for the Dance Department, plus I had French exams (written and oral), a Teaching Analysis of Classical Technique project and final, and a Theory and Philosophy of Dance final. By Wednesday afternoon, my load was much lighter. By Saturday afternoon, I was done!

Now, onto my French independent study

Une erreur

I need six hours of intermediate-advanced French so I can get my second major in English Literature, and I finished off the first three hours this past Wednesday when I completed our final exam. I am currently doing an independent study with another Butler French professor, and with that done I will graduate for real in August… which means I still get to walk in May Commencement. Oh, scheduling

Though my written final was on Wednesday, I took the oral portion on Monday with a partner. It’s not that bad. My French is very spotty, because I studied it for five years in middle/high school. That’s a pretty long time, but then I went another five years without speaking it. Again, that’s a pretty long time.

The point is, I remember a lot, and most of the grammar points that we covered, I had learned in the distant past. However, since it was a matter of recall… and I am no languages genius… I still struggled with certain things. Such as the phrase “free time.”

As I was playacting a skit with my partner, something typical about interviewing the other person for an apartment, I tried to ask what my partner did in his spare time. “Qu’est-ce que vous aimez faire dans votre amser sbâr?”

A beat. A pause. A quizzical look. Why was what I’d said wrong? It was, somehow, I knew. My teacher prompted, “votre temps libres?”

Yes, that was the French phrase for “free time,” one I hadn’t used that often.

Oh. It dawned on me. Welsh. “Amser sbâr” was Welsh for “free time.” I was speaking the wrong language! I hadn’t studied Welsh for two years, hadn’t thought about it really for months. Yet that phrase “amser sbâr” had been used often in the beginning of the Welsh course I followed, so it was apparently the “free time” that popped into my head first.

And then things got even more surreal when my French teacher said to me, in French, “That’s Welsh, isn’t it?” And then she said, “Beth dych chi’n hoffi wneud yn eich amser sbar?”

That’s perfect Welsh for, “What do you like to do in your spare time?” which I what I’d been trying to ask in French.

Mind. Blown.

The End of the Year and Beyond…

I just realized I have not posted since Sunday — where has the week gone? We graduate so soon, yet so much lies between me and a diploma. Namely:

  • Coppélia production and performance
  • dance and academic finals
  • Senior English Essay — workshopped and now awaiting revisions
  • two or three final projects in other classes
  • A French class, which I might be taking as an independent study

This summer is wide open. I hope I’ll finish that French class so I can actually graduate in August (though I’ll still walk in Commencement). I might have a guesting job in Illinois, and of course I wouldn’t want to miss the beach with my family! Then… I start dancing with Tulsa Ballet II at the end of July! :)

And when I opened Butler’s student newspaper yesterday, I saw I made the back page, where the Collegian staff quotes some Butler-related tweets seen in the last week. I’m famous!

Lazy Sunday

I went to bed early on Saturday night with every intention of waking up at a decent hour and doing some homework before church. Yeah… that did not happen. Saturday I had rehearsal from 8:30 am to 5 pm with only half an hour break to eat lunch, etc. We ended about half an hour early, actually, but I was still pretty tired after a day of mega dancing. So I slept in to a ridiculous hour this morning and rewarded myself with banana pancakes.

Ugh, they were so delicious! Senior semester is odd in that I have lots of do — and I either have super amounts of motivation (Coppélia rehearsals/prep) or none at all (pretty much all other academic homework). It’s a good thing I’ll be dancing next year, since that’s what’s really holding my interest.

And I just remembered I still have to finish one more French class before I can graduate — I’m walking in the May commencement, but I have to finish three more credit hours of my foreign language requirement for my second major in English Literature. “Happy graduation, everyone! Okay, now I’ll go write my French paper.” Gah, it never ends!

I still believe in the liberal arts, I promise. But I also believe in sleep. Right now, the two aren’t playing nicely.

Finals week: another look

If I were an international studies and French double major also participating in the honors program… I would be my troublesome roommate. And my finals schedule would look like this:

The week before finals week:

1. Honors class about Doctor Zhivago: a poetry anthology which explicated several poems by Russian writers and included original works

2. International studies class on the United Nations (IS 390): a paper on–you guessed it!–the United Nations

3. Anthropology class titled “Gender and Sexuality through Globalization” (AN 320): a paper on Fight Club exploring the film’s connections between masculinity and violence

Finals week:

1. 18th Century French literature (FR 435): a paper comparing literature from the beginning and the end of 18th century France

2. Doctor Zhivago honors class: a written final

3. Cultural Geography (GE 109): a written final on Asia and the Pacific Islands

After all that madness, one does not quite know what to do with oneself. So one attempts to use the last of the bread, garlic, and butter in the refrigerator before leaving campus and ends up watching croutons bake.

Clearly, Butler students don’t know what to do with themselves without schoolwork. But those croutons were reeeeally good.
