About Me:

My name is Olivia and I am a senior at Butler University. I spend most of my time in Lilly Hall as a BFA Dance Performance major. When not in rehearsal or ballet class, I write papers for my English Literature second major. In my super-abundant, never-lacking, this-is-highly-sarcastic spare time, I attempt to cook in my apartment kitchen, watch Youtube videos of ballet, knit sweaters that never seem to come to an end, and read books both silly and serious. If I could take any class at Butler just for kicks, I'd go for DiffyQ.

BSI Winds Down

A few highlights from the end of BSI:

I went to my first midnight premier of the Harry Potter movie with a group of students through the Butler summer residence halls. Here a BSI student wins my personal award for best costume of the night as a CleanSweep7 broomstick. I myself dressed in a red tank top and red skirt, tied a red scarf around my waist, and attached my red ballet skirt to my wrists and back — I was Fawkes, and I did not have feathers, and the costume was rather a flop. I enjoyed the movie, but the previews were too scary for me!!

Here we are at the BSI final dinner. I’m in the corner with other students and mentors, trying not to laugh out loud.

However, our basement apartment in UT (which was really much dirtier than I originally thought), soon suffered from an invasion of ants. I woke up in the morning with one crawling on my stomach. Though I emailed maintenance and they responded, they must have decided to wait until we moved out to deal with them, which was a bit icky. I know it’s summer and ants aren’t that threatening and pest control makes a room unlivable for a while… but come on, Butler. At least tell us you were going to wait until after the session. Mental preparation and all.

Funnily enough, most of the other students whose presentation photos were taken from this angle had more than just a head showing — I’m rather short. We finally presented the fruits of our BSI labors to all the BSI participants and whichever other students/faculty/mentors/staff/etc wanted to come.

I was nervous about my presentation at first; while I practiced I kept stumbling over my words so I finally had to type out a truncated script. Then I worried I would read from a piece of paper rather than make eye contact and all that. But something magical happened on Monday morning when I stood up in front of that room. Some combination of nerves and enthusiasm made all the words come out in the right order, in a short-enough timeframe, in an apparently coherent-enough way to merit detailed questions and positive responses. Hooray!

Cooking Adventures II

The string of cooking successes continues with dinner! I talked last time about lunches being leftovers or sandwiches, which is very true. I guess I should admit, however, that I’m often just not hungry for lunch after having such a huge breakfast. Dinner tends to come early on these days, leaving plenty of time afterward for dessert!

Dinner.

1. Salad with homemade dressing roughly obtained from the Moosewood Collective cookbook my parents gave me for my birthday this past year. I had been mixing my dressings with the end of a long wooden spoon in the largest plastic cup I could find. This time, I used an empty (and clean) yogurt container to shake up the dressing.

However! I got a drink mixer at Target which I intend to use for mixing dressings, since it is construction for the purpose of being shaken without spraying garlic and milk everywhere. I’ll let you know how that turns out.

2. Thai Sweet Potato Stew. My dad made this sometime last year, and I periodically crave it now. It’s made with sweet potato, onion, spices, coconut milk, and other things I can’t recall just now. Serve over rice while watching a Miyazaki movie with a friend. (This was before classes began, obviously.) Yum.

3. Here’s the mission. You have a can of refried beans you accidentally started to open because you thought it was black beans. (Actually, not you, but that’s a minor detail. :) Smile, friend!) You must use these refried beans now. And the leftover tofu from a tofu dish. And using some of the lettuce and the lone onion would be nice as well.

What do you do? Throw onion, garlic, tomato, tofu, and a boat-load of spices in the skillet. Heat the beans and add cheese. Serve with a pile of lettuce. Use either Italian dressing or salsa verde, and TA-DA! You have yourself a burrito-like pile of ingredients that taste shockingly delicious.

Seriously, that tofu thing was bamf. I think it was the high-volume of onions.

4. Taste roommate’s chili. Decide it’s the best thing ever. Crave chili for months. Stockpile every different type of bean under the sun. Finally, finally make chili. I’m still eating the leftovers, and they are pretty much the bees’ knees, except, you know, more substantial and heartier.

Assimilation

The freshman class this year is enormous. Huge–958, in fact. This also extends to the incoming dance majors–there are approximately one gazillion of them this year, and I am having a devil of a time trying to keep all the names and faces straight.

This is why Sigma Rho Delta’s Freshman Progressive Dinner was so helpful. Three of the apartment blocks in the Apartment Village house Sigma Rho officers, so they hosted the dinner. One apartment had appetizers, one had pizza, and my apartment had dessert.

My roommate (who is president of Sigma Rho*) baked for about twelve hours straight. I’m only slightly joking. She was baking when I went to sleep on Friday night, and she was in front of the stove again when I returned from snow rehearsal the next morning. The spread was impressive:

Adjusting to a new school can be difficult at times. Being in so many of the same classes day after day means the dancers generally band together pretty quickly, but it can still be awkward. I know I didn’t really get to know many of the dance majors in my own class until second semester of my freshman year. But I made other friends, and we’re all one big, happy family, etcetera and so on.

Still, this gave the freshman an opportunity to get to together in a non-dance setting and to meet some more of the upperclassmen. I say the evening was a grand success. Look at those smiling faces.

*Sigma Rho Delta is the dance service fraternity. We provide service to the department (help in the costume shop, publicity, newsletters, working the boutique during shows…) and go see performances and things like that together. Last year, I was the pledge trainer.
