My first day in Australia was exhausting. Fun fact I can’t sleep on planes, so I was basically up for an entire 48 hours. My flight was 4.5 hours from Indy to LAX and then 14 hours from LAX to Sydney. On top of that I basically missed Sunday, and also I didn’t go to sleep last night until 1130 PM. I tried to gun it out as much as possible so that I can get used to the time change here.
Anyway Australia is amazing. I haven’t seen much yet, but I’m really excited to explore. My university here is extremely different from Butler. It’s way more city than I expected. In all my pictures I saw it seemed like I would be in the suburbs and a lot of green space. Butler is in the city, but you don’t feel that way because a lot of our campus is a park setting so its really pretty. However, after moving into my apartment i’m starting to see how Macquarie is so different than Butler! I am in a suburb of Sydney, but it’s super busy and there’s a lot going on all the time!
Yesterday I went to the shopping centre that’s only a 5-10 minute walk from my apartment. It is insanely huge and I got lost. It also has an ice skating rink, which I find bizarre, but I guess Aussies need Winter too!
Macquarie Shopping Centre!
I haven’t taken any photos yet, but when I do I will be sure to share with you! Today I’m going to go grocery shopping so I’m sure that will be an experience. Tomorrow is my orientation day where I actually figure out classes and things like that so I’m excited!
Oh and one last thing it’s 82 and sunny here
For most trips I take a lot of time and effort to plan everything out. However with Australia it seems like I am literally just packing every article of clothing I have. This makes packing seem so less important, which is definitely not the case.
While in Australia I will be there for three different seasons! When I arrive it will still be summer time and when I leave it will be the beginning of winter, which means I get my favorite season of the year fall! Although I have heard Australia seasons are a little warmer than ours, obviously Thankfully my airliner allows two free bags, but I’m worried about how I’m going to walk around with all this stuff.
I’m pretty sure I’m the last Butler person to leave for Australia. This will probably be my last blog before I leave! I have 2 days left, and I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m sure this is really reassuring to my family. However, it’s starting to really settle in that I will be gone for 4 months. I can’t wait to share my experiences with you guys. Hopefully I come back alive with no kangaroo attacks or koala attacks to report.
I know there are a lot of my friends at Butler that say they will live vicariously through me. Trust me I will be doing the same with you guys. While I know I will have the time of my life I will still miss each and every one of you at Butler. I can’t wait to hear how Spring Sports goes, how amazing Spring Break trips are, and I especially cannot wait to hear where all the seniors get their first real people job! Until then live away vicariously through my life. As always I will be blogging, tweeting, facebook, and Instagram!
I’m sure I’ve posted this before, but I cannot stop listening to this song!
Ever since freshmen year I have been wanting to do one thing since I have been at Butler. OK, that might be slightly ridiculous I wanted to do a lot my freshmen year, but this is one of the only things left that I haven’t done yet. That one thing is study abroad. I am so excited to say that this dream is finally coming true, and I get to study abroad in SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.
Yes, I realize this super touristy, but I’m still going to see it!
I have literally been waiting for this news ever since August, and last Friday I finally received the news I was waiting for. In February I will be leaving for Sydney. No worries I will still be blogging so it’s almost like you are with me the whole time! Even though I have been accepted for the exchange I still have a lot left to do. I never realized how much is involved with study abroad, but I can’t wait to see what this adventure brings me!
Macquarie University! The university I will be attending.
What’s really awesome is that a lot of my friends are going abroad as well! My study abroad program is a little weird in that Australia’s semester doesn’t start until February. I won’t be back until July, which is crazy to think about. While I know I will be missing a lot while I’m gone the major event I will be missing is seeing my niece grow for the first couple of months. My sister is due in the last week of January, so hopefully I’ll be able to meet my niece before I leave, but I won’t be able to see her for her first couple of months! Either way next semester is going to have a lot of exciting times for me! I can’t wait to experience and share with you all.
