I Swear I’m Going To Class

I love being near such a large city like Sydney. I can’t imagine there’s anyway I will see everything in Sydney, but I think so far I am doing a pretty good job. This past weekend my friends and I went to the Sydney Westfield Centre. I believe it is one of the tallest towers in Sydney if not the tallest. On the top is a place called the 360 Bar and Restaurant. It is exactly how it sounds 360 degrees of amazing views of Sydney. Did I mention the entire place spins?

It was a lot of fun to get dressed up with a lot of my friends. We went out to celebrate our friend, Chris, birthday. Chris turned 21 and even though the drinking age in Australia is 18, 21 is still a big day in Australia too because it means you are becoming an adult!

All the girls with Chris!

All the girls with Chris!

When we got to the bar it was amazing. The views there are unlike any other that I have seen so far in the city. One of the guys in our group just so happened to stumble upon the general manager without knowing and so we got free food! All in all if you are ever in Sydney it is a place you definitely must go and see. Grab a nice drink and take in the city around you.

This week my friends and I plan on going to the mansion where the Great Gatsby was filmed and we have a wine tasting/kangaroo/koala petting day on Friday! I swear I am going to classes! Something that I am thrilled to announce is that I accepted in the PACE International program. This means I will be working with 3 others on building a marketing campaign for India:Restless Development. I’m so thrilled to be able to say on resume and to others that I helped create an international marketing campaign!

Thanks to everyone back home who is keeping up with my blogs. To all the potential Butler students and to those of you who have recently accepted your spot in the Fall, I hope one thing you see through all my blog posts of Australia is the insane opportunities you will experience while at Butler. On top of that the support you will get from a small school in Indianapolis to a large one in Sydney, Australia.

This Definitely Is Not Butler

If you were not aware I am currently living in the future. It’s March 5th here in Australia at 930 AM. I started school on Monday and I feel like a freshman all over again. I haven’t had all my classes yet, but for the ones that I have experienced it is way different from Butler.

At Butler I have never experienced a class bigger than 20. Here I have lectures of 100-150. This my not seem that dramatic to people at bigger schools, but for me on the first day of class I am used to so many different things at Butler. On the first day of class at Butler there is actually attendance taken, icebreakers done, and you actually know at least half the class from previous years. At Macquarie it is the complete opposite. Almost all of the lectures at Macquarie are provided online so you technically do not have to attend the lecture. Actually one of my classes yesterday was an iLecture, so I’ll never go in for the lecture.

I guess I’ll experience smaller sizes when we have tutorials. Tutorials are smaller group discussions where attendance is usually taken. These meet after lectures or sometimes later in the week. It is really weird for me but I’m sure I will get used to it. So far I love my classes. Although it is funny when your Australian professor tries to explain something American. Or like yesterday when my professor used a quote from another professor from UNC (University of North Carolina) and had to explain to my class it was a university in the United States.

In one of my classes I am the only American which is really cool. However, some of the students have found out from none other than my voice and started to bombard me with questions about America.

I will say one thing is for sure Butler definitely prepared me for a lot of things here. In one of my classes I am applying for a program called PACE International Stream, which will allow me to work on a marketing campaign for a non profit in India. If chosen I will be able to experience interactions with international company and hopefully they will use the teams’ campaign idea. At Butler I did something similar and when asked about the skills I had so many through my classes at Butler. It took me a million miles to realize how thankful I am for everything I’ve learned at Butler.

I’ll keep you guys posted if I get into the program! Other than that everything is great! It’s weird to say this, but I almost forgot that I came here for school so it’s probably a good thing it started back up.

Here’s a song that I loved when I heard back in the states, but in Australia is super popular!

I Never Thought I Would Say This…

BUT I MISS CLASSES. My classes in Australia don’t start until March 3rd, so until then I’m not enrolled in any classes. While I thought this would be an extremely relaxing time I never thought it being too relaxing. Doing nothing sounds great to most people, but to me I am starting to lose my mind. Thank goodness for work at Firebelly Marketing or then I would literally probably just be at home watching Netflix 24/7.

You think not having classes would be great, but it’s not. I feel like a student who has dropped out. You think that you’ll have people to hang out with, which is some what true, but since people have classes at different times during the day it’s hard to plan schedules out. On top of that most of my friends at Butler just like myself are involved with five billion different things, so you are no longer just planning on classes but also on extra activities.

For the most part I keep my timed preoccupied through work, but I do miss class. At least with class you can have breaks in the day where you’re taking a nap or just hanging out. Work doesn’t exactly have a time for naps. In class you may think you are dreading that pop quiz or that test coming up, but at least you can prepare yourself for that. At work you may never know what can happen in one day. So as much as I complain about classes, I miss them. Watch in a month when I start Australian classes I will wish I was back in this moment. You always want what you can’t have.

Here’s something to get you in the mood for some Super Bowl Sunday madness with a lot of Colts appearances :)

Are You #ButlerBound?

Admission packets went out last Friday, and this year admissions meant a little more to me. Working in the office of admission I got to help pack and stuff all the packets that were sent out! I can only hope that the excitement I experienced when finding out I got into Butler is the same excitement you experienced!

butlerbound

While the decision process isn’t always easy, and some of you will be debating between 2 or more schools I sincerely hope you consider Butler. Personally I couldn’t see myself anywhere but Butler. These past 2 1/2 years at Butler have showed me that I really did pick the best school for me. That’s what really matters. Don’t go where all your friends are going just because they are going there. Don’t go where everyone thinks will be the best fit for you. Follow your gut, and hopefully it will lead you to Butler ;)

In the next few weeks I will start to share more about the things I love about Butler. If you care to look at some of my past posts such as: Things I Take For Granted: Butler Edition or The Top Three Reasons you will start to get an idea of the reasons a lot of people love Butler. If you have any questions about Butler please feel free to comment! I will try and respond to each and every one of you. Happy holidays everyone!

Tune/Turn In Tuesday

So I have definitely been slacking on the blogs, but I PROMISE from here on out things are going to be amazing, because after finals week is over I have 2 months of break time. Well not exactly break time. Once finals are done I will take a little break and then go straight to working 30-40 hours a week at my marketing job before I leave for Australia. Yes, everything has officially been approved and I will be leaving for Australia in February! Get excited!

Since most of my finals has involved more writing and less studying (most of my finals are papers/presentations I only have 1 exam!) I thought I would share with you some of the songs I have been listening to keep me motivated and push through this week of craziness. Hope you guys enjoy and good luck to anyone out there still going through finals week!

#1. Explosions in the Sky – Your Hand In MineThis is the perfect song to listen to over and over if you are writing paper. There are no words so you can really focus on what you are doing. To me this song even without words has a lot of emotion to it, but it really allows me to not sing along. Instead, I listen to this song whenever I have to write a long paper like I did yesterday for my 8-10 page research paper!

#2. Tove Lo – Habits (Hippie Sabotage Remix)
The original to this song is just as good as the remix, but I can’t stop listening to the remix. I love listening to this song because of the beat and the singers voice. For that reason I usually can’t listen to this song while writing, so I  listened to it while working on my design project yesterday.

#3. So High – Ghost Loft
This song has a really chilled out and relaxed vibe to it, which is so helpful for writing papers. There’s no really crazy singing or anything like that just this very cool, airy type of song that can make you feel like you aren’t stuck in a library for 6-8 hours, which is nice.

Sorry guys I’m sticking to only 3 songs this time, because I still have a final due at 12 PM tomorrow and I haven’t made the progress I would like. Also I’m currently at the downtown library trying not to fall asleep… Happy Finals Week everyone!

It’s I’m Dead Week.

So this week is the week where for other schools it’s a time to prep for finals, but here at Butler it’s just another week to remind yourself that you don’t go to an easy school. It’s only Monday, and because of how much stuff I have due I already think that tomorrow is Wednesday. Yes, it’s that bad.

I know I tend to do this a lot. I mean I like to list things a lot, which is to show you that I’m crazy, but then also to remind myself the things I need to do this week. Today I’ve already completed my Spanish oral exam as well as work on my personal branding project, but if you don’t mind I would like to list again! Here goes nothing :)

12/10: Research Methods group assignment due , Group presentation for Indiana State Library
12/11: Women and Rock research paper due by 5 PM
12/12: Firebelly Marketing (my other job)
12/13: Spanish quiz

I realize this may not seem crazy, but then just wait until next week.

12/16: Graphic Design presentation (FINAL) self branding/ save the arts project
12/17: Research proposal paper due
12/18: Women and Rock FINAL due
12/19: Research Methods Test 2

It doesn’t seem a lot, it’s just that all of these take a lot of research/time, so I’ll be hiding out for a little bit. On top of all this I’m still trying to figure out Australia shenanigans out, because my counter part in Australia is taking forever to get back with me. Wish me luck everyone!

What’s In My Backpack?

I am clearly losing my mind when my blog posts are now becoming about what’s in my backpack. However it is true that I am losing my mind because lately all I can think about is how complicated my study abroad plan has become, but that is a completely different story. Lately, I have been doing really cheesy blogs, so I thought instead of doing another cheesy blog I would let you know what’s in my backpack.

This thought came up because I see this in magazines sometimes where they ask a celebrity what’s in their bag… Yes I know I’m not a celebrity or as cool as a celebrity, it’s fine. Just go with the flow on this one. Also I’m just going to go in the sections of my bag, because I have a lot of stuff in my bag and we could be here for a while if I do every individual thing.

Top Pocket:
Headphones, EOS lip balm, pens/pencils, Butler basketball tickets, change
All of these items are extremely important, but if I would have to pick one thing that I want to talk to you about it is my EOS lip balm. I realize this sounds ridiculous considering I had basketball tickets in my backpack, but you probably are tired of hearing me talk about Butler basketball. EOS LIP BALM IS AMAZING. For one you can get your entire mouth in one swoop. It’s like a two for one. Also it’s packaging is so cute, which I don’t see why that matters but it’s awesome and I love it. Just try it, it’s around $3 at Walgreens and it’s worth it.

eosSide note: Found out that EOS stands for Evolution of Smooth while writing this so that should tell you something.

Main Pocket:
Study abroad per-departure packet, Spanish book, Spanish notebook, planner
This is very typical of what you’ll see in my backpack on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. If you know me then you know that I live by my planner. I am probably a planning addict. That doesn’t sound good when I say it like that, BUT I love my planner, and I feel so much better when everything is laid out. Just try it if you feel stressed out. Plus I might have splurged a little on my planner, so I think it’s really pretty. I know you are probably judging me right now. That’s fine, I know I’m a weirdo when it comes to the planner situation.

planner

This is my Vera Bradley planner that I love.

So this is what happens when I’m stressed out and don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. I write really weird things, so for your sake and my sake I hope that the light at the end of the tunnel for study abroad becomes clear. Until then my posts might start to get weirder….

A Typical Day In My Life

The other day I spoke on a panel for prospective students and one of the questions that was asked was what a typical day for a student is. While each student has a different schedule I thought it would be nice to share maybe one of my days and how it is blocked off in time. Once again this is not for EVERY student! Each student has very personalized and different schedule, but here is what a typical Tuesday looks like for me.

10 AM – 12 PM: Work at Admissions Office
I am a Butler Student Ambassador, so I give tours to perspective students as well as do office work. My shift is always on Tuesday at this time, which is nice so that I know I will always have this during my week.

12-205 PM: Break Time
From whenever I get home from work to 2:05 I have a break. Typically I just make lunch and either watch TV or take a nap. If it’s an extremely stressful week then usually I study during that time. Sometimes I have to finish a paper for my next class so I spend this break time doing that as well. Today I woke up at 7 AM so I could start on a paper that was due for a class today (I hope my dad doesn’t see this) since I finished it this morning I ate lunch and took a nap!

225 – 505 PM : Strategic Communications – Research Methods
I know this class seems extremely long, and that’s because it is EXTREMELY LONG! However, the nice thing about this class is that it only meets once a week. This is one of my mandatory classes for my major, Strategic Communications. It goes over the different research methods used in the field of PR and Advertising. I don’t mind how long the class is however I have two others classes at night that are this long as well.

505-6 PM: Dinner Break
Typically I do walk back to my apartment because my class from 2:25-5:05 always gets out early, so I actually have a lot of time before my next class to have some dinner. Tonight I changed it up a little and went to C Club with my friend Kaitlin to get dinner before class. Since Fall Break is this week on Thursday and Friday I haven’t bought anymore groceries because there’s no point… so basically I’m scrounging for food! Just in case you didn’t know I don’t live in my sorority house anymore! I live in the apartments on campus so now I have a kitchen that I can cook my own food. No, Butler is not starving me!

6-830 PM: Strategic Communications for Nonprofits
Once again here is another one of my 3 hour classes! In this class we are actually leading a PR campaign for two different nonprofits in the Indianapolis area, so we get a lot of real life experience. This class only meets on Tuesdays, which is the miserable part about the class is the time. However, because of my night classes, that only meet once a week, I am able to have Thursdays off. Having Thursdays off is extremely important for me because then I get to work at my marketing agency job.

830-BED: Relaxing/Studying
Depending on how much stuff I have to do I either go home and hang out with friends/watch TV or study. Right now it’s mostly just hanging out because the load of my work is on Mondays and Tuesdays!

So that’s a typical Tuesday for me. On other days it usually includes meetings for different organizations or even Butler basketball which is coming up, but like I mentioned before not every Butler student is like that. Many people don’t go this late into the night, so it really just depends on whichever student you talk to!

My Secret Obsession: Rings

Working at Forever 21 for three years has definitely affected my life in many ways. While I met some amazing and also very interesting people there I also learned that saving your paycheck is more important than spending money on clothes and rings. Although sometimes you just can’t help but by things.

Every one in while Forever 21 will have these insane sales where everything is an additional 50% off of clearance item, which is ridiculous because items such as rings are then only 50 cents. Do you really think I would pass that up? This whole sale is what started my ring obsession. It doesn’t help that most rings there at only $2.80 anyway, but the on sale it just makes everything ten times worse.

All the rings I currently own!

As you can see from the picture above it might be getting a little crazy, but trust me it cannot just be any ring that can make it into my collection. I am extremely picky, but I will still probably be adding many more to this. The sad thing is that I know when one is missing… Happy ring shopping!

Too Many Options

A lot of people I know have declared their major. Their advising appointments go more along the lines of, “You need this for your major, and well you don’t have time for that core credit so you will have to take that later.” My advising appointments go more like this, “So what are you interested in now? Oh, it looks like next semester you will be done with all your core.”

Maybe I am getting a bit ahead of myself. Let me explain what I mean by Core. Butler University has a core curriculum. Being a liberal arts school we are considered to be more well rounded by taking all different sorts of classes even if they do not relate to our major. I’ll try and give a brief description of the core, but there is a lot involved with it! The main aspects of the core are:

  • Physical Well Being
  • Natural World
  • Perspectives in the Creative Arts
  • Text & Ideas
  • The Social World
  • Analytical Reasoning

Those are the main six, there is also FYS (Freshmen Year Seminar), which you must take as a freshman, and then also Global & Historical Studies (GHS) that you must take as a sophomore. The core may seem annoying to some, but I love it because they are probably classes I would have never taken had I gone to a bigger university. Currently how I am covering my core is taking Sex Gender & Sexuality in Japan (Social World Credit), Religions of the World (Text & Ideas Credit), and Helen of Troy (FYS).

The book for my FYS!

Next semester I plan to take Codes & Secret Messages (Analytical Reasoning Credit), Intro to Ballet (Physical Well Being Credit), and Intro to Visual Arts (Perspective in the Creative Arts Credit). I am so excited! I am still trying to figure out my major, but with all these core it’s helping me see things that I thought I may not be interested in.

Also, everyone keeps posting this video everywhere on Facebook, now I know why…
