Hi I'm Katie, I am a sophomore at Butler! I am a Strategic Communications major with a focus in Public Relations. I love being involved in campus and hold positions in College Mentors for Kids and Dawg Pound. I am also a Butler Student Ambassador, Morton Finney Scholar, and a Recruitment Counselor. Almost Done

At a lot of other schools there is a week at the end of semester called Dead Week. This is the week where you are supposed to be preparing for finals and getting everything set for the stressful week that is ahead. Unfortunately, at Butler dead week doesn’t exist, so this week has been completely insane. Today at 215 PM I will finally be able to say that I am completely done with everything for this week, and I can relax. To say I am excited is an understatement.

Here is a little snapshot of what I had to do this week:
Promotional Writing 15-20 minute group presentation
Spanish 102 Cultural Project 20 minute group presentation
Arts Administration 10 minute presentation
Design and Production online portfolio
Global and Historical Studies research paper 5-6 pages

All this on top of still completely assignments for the classes, as well as trying to figure out my life with summer jobs, and balancing sorority craziness. Thankfully the company I am talking with for my possible summer job is extremely understanding. To explain the sorority craziness, this week is not only our philanthropy week but also our senior week. This means that we have to do a lot more than usual, which is totally fine besides it is the craziest week ever. However, I am extremely excited for our philanthropy event as well as senior week. I love the seniors and will miss them so much!

Tomorrow expect to see a blog of complete excitement from me. By then I will have been probably a complete 24 hours stress free, that is until Sunday when I realize I need to start studying for finals. Good luck to all the students out there! This Is Going Too Fast

I can’t believe that I’m already in my second semester as a sophomore. It’s insane to think that at the end of this semester I will be registering for junior classes! This semester I’m starting to get even more into my major and I really like it! Here are the classes I am taking this semester and what I think about all of them so far!

SP 102: Spanish 102
T,W,Th,F 9-950
I have not decided yet if I like the shorter class time and 4 days a week or the longer class time 2 days a week like my Spanish 101 was. Either way I’m really excited to learn more Spanish because my plan is to go to Spain ASAP! I love traveling and so study abroad is something I want to do while at Butler. I really like my professor as well. She’s really helpful and understanding!

GHS 205: Global and Historical Studies – East Asian Interactions
T,Th 11- 1215
GHS is part of Butler’s Core which means this class is something everyone must take. East Asian Interactions is not the only topic you can take. There are many different topics, but I chose East Asian Interactions because I thought it would be interesting to learn more about my culture. Although this class is possibly becoming one my least favorite classes. I don’t really enjoy my professor’s way of teaching, so that sometime is a struggle. It is really interesting though!

AA 301: Arts Administration
T,Th 1-215
I’m taking this class as part of one my extra classes for my major. This classes deals mainly with how to manage a non profit organization. It is really interesting and will definitely help me later on if I decide to do PR for a non profit. This class is really creative and we do a lot of games that get us to think outside of the box.

STR 228: Promotional Writing
W 225-505
I only have this class once a week, which can be kind of intense sometimes. This class is also for my major and deals with writing for memos, releases, and a lot of knowing what to say in the proper way. I really like this class because I want to improve my writing, so I hope by the end of this class this will help with internships!

STR 251: Design and Production for STR
M, W 1-215
I really like this class! We learn how to use Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and a lot of other Adobe products! It’s a lot of fun, but today we are sketching and I’m not sure how great that will turn out for me. My professor is really nice too and very helpful!

It’s insane to think about how many credits I already have and everything I am learning, but I’m so excited to be continuing on in my major and getting deeper into topics!

DONE

My first semester of my sophomore year is officially done. I had four finals in two days, and basically had to study non stop. Here is the basic life of a college student during finals week. Play massive amounts of Pandora with either complete rage music or very calming music. Then drink tons of caffeine or Starbucks or even use every possible free thing Butler provides you whether it be food, drinks or any other stress less thing you can come up. Then try to find rooms in Jordan, Gallahue, Irwin, or any other possible building you can think of. After all that is accomplished study away your life as much as possible.

The only problem with this idea is that Butler decided to have a speech competition held on our campus on the Saturday before finals which typically is intense cram time for many students. Many students had trouble finding a room to study in, but I was able to find a place in Gallahue to study. On Monday I had my Strategic Communications final and my Music final for my PCA. On Tuesday I had my Media Literacy final and my Spanish final. Needless to say I am glad that I am officially done with everything. I studied pretty much all day everyday from Saturday to Tuesday.

Now that finals are done I’m just hanging around campus basically going home whenever I feel like it since I live so close. I hope everyone isn’t dying from finals!

Planning My Life

Believe it or not scheduling is just right around the corner for next semester. My adviser sent me an email on what I should have prepared for our advising meeting and to say the least I feel like I am getting extremely old.

It’s weird to think that after this year I will be half done with my college career, and seeing questions that ask what do you plan on doing after college freak me out. In the past two weeks, I’ve been to meetings about internships and learning about the professional field of what I want to do in Public Relations. Needless to say I am a little freaked out but mostly excited, but as many of you know I am trying to perfect my college plan.

I never thought I would say this but I actually do not want to leave school. There is so much left that I want to learn and not enough time. If I have any advice for those of you still in high school pick a foreign language and stick with it, because not coming in with any credit toward a language is causing me so much stress at this point. Every one tells me it’s not a huge deal, but when I’m trying to study abroad in Spain and still am in Spanish 101 at this point, it’s kind of a big deal.

I will try not to rip my hair out at my adviser meeting, and at this point I’m just trying to stay positive even though it may not seem like it! Other than that I’m extremely excited about all the Strategic Communication classes that I get to take next semester! Wish me luck!

Is It Fall Break Yet?

Typically my course load is not that bad. Compared to a lot of other people my classes are mainly all reading. I don’t have that many tests or assignments, and I usually can just read and be fine in my classes. This week is a different story.

About an hour ago I took an exam for my Strategic Communications class. I think I did pretty well, but I’m not completely sure. It was difficult to study for just because I had so much going on last week with classes as well as social/greek life.

Today I have to study all day again, because I have another exam tomorrow in my media literacy class. It doesn’t help that I stayed up until 2 this morning and woke back up again at 630 to continue studying, but in a sense this is all my fault. After I take this test tomorrow I am done with tests for the week, but then next week I have a lot to do again!

Next Tuesday I have tests in three out of my four classes in one day. Some times I wish I was still in middle school when all the teachers discussed about when they were having tests so they were not all jammed packed… Welcome to real life, I guess.

Even though right now is slightly stressful, Fall Break is right around the corner and I can’t wait. Until then I’m praying I make it through these tests!

I’m A Sophomore?

Seeing the freshmen makes me feel old, which is pathetic because I’m only a sophomore. Being a sophomore isn’t that much different from being a freshmen except now I’m starting to like my classes a lot more! My classes are becoming to be more specific to my major and it makes everything a lot more interesting. To stick with tradition this will be the blog that I post explaining every class I’m taking. I did two of these for my freshmen year and plan to do the same this year!

SW 266 – Media Literacy
This class is a requirement for my communications major. I really like it so far because it’s interesting to learn about society through media, and see how it affects us everyday. Plus it has to do with my major so I automatically like it.

PCA 241 – Music In Action
This class is for my CORE curriculum at Butler. I’ve done a lot of blogs about the CORE, so if you are not sure what that is you can check out one of those blogs. This class is entertaining just because my professor is funny. It also is reminding me of my days back in middle school playing violin. This class goes into detail about music particularly classical music and where it all started from. It’s really interesting, but I’m glad I only have to be in it for one semester.

COM 101 – Public Speaking
There’s an extremely long title to this class, but it should be just called Public Speaking. This is also a requirement for my major. My professor is new to Butler, which is cool because she’s taught at larger schools and I think she brings a new perspective to our class and campus. She’s also extremely entertaining so I feel like for a class that could have been boring she has turned into a class that I love going to everyday.

STR 222 – Principles of Strategic Communications
This is for my major as well! It’s exciting because I am finally in the beginning classes towards my major. So far this class is extremely interesting. We have been talking about advertising and how it affects our lives, but eventually we will also look into Public Relations. It’s more of a general class of strat comm, but it’s pretty exciting to go from exploratory to now finally being in major classes.

SP 101 – Beginning Spanish
Yes I am in beginning Spanish. In high school I took French and Japanese and now I need a language for my major so I figured I should do Spanish. I’ve never taken Spanish in my life unless you count the three week rotation in middle school where we tried to see if we liked it or not, in which case I chose French. I really do miss French, but I don’t see how it will help me in the long run so that is why I chose Spanish. I hate the time of this class (Tuesdays/Thursdays 6-740 PM), but I’m excited to be taking a language class again. I love languages!

So that’s my schedule for this semester. It’s the last semester of my CORE classes except for my GHS. It’s weird to think that I am already done with CORE! Hopefully this means more classes for my major next semester!

Press Conference Time

Today I feel like I should be giving a press conference. Finally, I feel like I have come to a decision. If you did not know I was an Exploratory major. This means that I am undecided, but unlike other schools Butler really tries to help you figure out what best fits for you. I have taken numerous personality, strengths, and work surveys/tests to see what best fits me. I have noticed many things from these and just the classes I am taking.

The same thing keeps popping up no matter what test. I am a communicator. I love talking to just about anyone and knowing about them. Also I noticed that my strengths are not really in the sciences or maths. I have never had a strong suit in any of these and because of that I have realized that my writing is my strongest area. Although I may not be the strongest writer I see that I have room to grow and I am excited about that!

So what am I declaring in? I have officially decided to become a Public Relations major. Here at Butler my major is not called PR but instead Strategic Communications with a focus in Public Relations. I think I have known that this would be my major for a while, but I was too afraid to declare. Last night while looking through all the different majors Butler has to offer I realized that any major I liked was in the College of Communications. It did not make sense to me why I was afraid to declare, when all along Public Relations was my main choice.

Even though a lot of people say that the personality tests, strengths tests, job tests, and job shadowing did not help them I think it helped me tremendously. I am so grateful for all the people in my life that helped support me and encourage me. From now on I can say I am a Strat Comm major instead of Exploratory, and that for me might the biggest accomplishment of my semester/year.
