Sometimes at Butler it seems like there is a competition in email signatures. On all our emails at the bottom of each one sent is a signature. Typically it says your name and some of things you are involved with. At Butler since everyone is literally involved in everything signatures can get kind of out of control.
I have no room to talk. Here is my signature at the end of my emails.
Butler University Class of 2015
College of Communication – Strategic Communication
Recruitment Counselor – Butler Panhellenic Association
Director of Recruitment – College Mentors for Kids
Content Developer – Firebelly Marketing
Student Ambassador – Butler University
Admissions Blogger – Butler University
Street Team – Dawg Pound
I know it’s ridiculous. However, how I go about my signature is very well thought out, in my opinion. For one on my signature I only put organizations that I actually hold a position in. The email signature at Butler is a known thing, and literally everyone has one. Here’s the thing, it’s not a competition, at least it shouldn’t be.
My advice on the email signature is do the things you enjoy. Most students do get involved with a lot on campus. It is a great way to meet new people, and get involved with your community. However, don’t let the only reason you join something is so you can extend your email signature. At this point, anything else I join I have to drop something off my list, which is why my list has not changed at all because all of things I am involved with are organizations and jobs I love.
I have been involved with College Mentors for Kids since freshmen year and have worked up the executive ladder with that. Dawg Pound, student fan section, is my fun organization that I love. It’s something I have also been involved with since freshmen year. If you know me then you know that I love Butler sports and cheering on the Bulldogs. The Recruitment Counselor slot will be filled back in next semester with what sorority I am in. Until then I have to keep secret about what house I am in to provide the freshmen girls going through recruitment with an unbiased opinion! Last but not least my jobs will never be changing, obviously as long as I don’t get fired! I love all of my jobs and love being able to share my experiences with each and every one of you!
So long story short, don’t let the email signature haunt you. Do what you love and love what you do.
