Thankful For NO BLACK FRIDAY.

For the first time in 4 years I DID NOT WORK BLACK FRIDAY. My first day ever in retail back when I was a junior in high school was Black Friday, so of course I had gotten used to the dreaded day. However, not having to work retail today was the best feeling ever.

I was able to experience a lot for the first time not working Black Friday. There was no waking up at 3 AM to make it to work at 4 AM. I didn’t have to fold any clothes or ring up people at the cash register for my entire shift. I didn’t have to deal with crazed customers trying to get clothes that are already cheap to begin with. Did I mention I worked at Forever 21? How clothes can get any cheaper there I really have no idea. On top of that the girls I know working there now had to do a double shift today.

Instead of dealing with crowds of crazy people going out at all hours of the night I slept in. Ate leftovers. Caught up with Scandal (Yes, I finished 3 seasons in 4 days it’s embarrassing) Watched a great game of the dawgs, which didn’t end up the way I wanted it, but nonetheless was still a great game. Now I am just writing this blog to explain how after 4 years of Black Fridays, I might miss the craziness a little bit… Who am I kidding? No Black Friday today was amazing! But to all those in retail I understand your pain and for that reason I stayed in today! Here’s a video to get you excited for the season!

What This Summer Is Really About

Typically for most students summer is a time to relax and enjoy life. For me summer is all about saving money, which means I need to stop spending money. Unfortunately my friends love to spend money it seems like. I really don’t have that option right now. Here’s why:

#1. Study Abroad (hopefully)
Next year I plan on studying abroad in Australia during the spring semester. While I hope that it all works out that means I really need to save money in order to do all the things I want. I also am trying to figure out how much flights are from Australia to Japan so that I can possibly visit family there.

#2. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Say whatever you want, but I must attend the Justin Timberlake concert. I am willing to forgo all other summer concerts just to see him in December. This probably seems extremely ridiculous, but I can’t help it. Buying Justin Timberlake tickets though isn’t cheap, which is just another reason among others why saving money is mandatory this summer.

#3. Gas
More importantly I pay for a lot of my own things. I pay for gas, my clothes (except for work, thanks dad) and going out with friends. On the top of those things gas is the most important, however, sometimes I forget that minor detail and spend gas money on other things. I am trying to work on that.

While this summer will still somewhat be fun, I definitely need to save as much as I can. This probably means that I will need to teach myself something so I can consume my time without shopping…

My Secret Obsession: Rings

Working at Forever 21 for three years has definitely affected my life in many ways. While I met some amazing and also very interesting people there I also learned that saving your paycheck is more important than spending money on clothes and rings. Although sometimes you just can’t help but by things.

Every one in while Forever 21 will have these insane sales where everything is an additional 50% off of clearance item, which is ridiculous because items such as rings are then only 50 cents. Do you really think I would pass that up? This whole sale is what started my ring obsession. It doesn’t help that most rings there at only $2.80 anyway, but the on sale it just makes everything ten times worse.

All the rings I currently own!

As you can see from the picture above it might be getting a little crazy, but trust me it cannot just be any ring that can make it into my collection. I am extremely picky, but I will still probably be adding many more to this. The sad thing is that I know when one is missing… Happy ring shopping!

People Are Crazy

As usual I am working at Forever 21 over the holidays. I don’t really mind ever working at Forever 21 because it is a job I am used to, but this past week has been ridiculous. Let me explain.

To start out, last week I came down with the flu. I’m not completely sure it’s the flu, because I did not go to the doctor, but I am pretty sure it was something to that extent. I had a fever. I threw up at work, and still completed my shift. It was not that big of a deal I’ve thrown up at work before and still worked. You just kind of learn to suck it up and go on. Shockingly though the throw up is not what made my job miserable at times this week. It was the hours and the people. Typically we are open from 10 AM to 9 PM, but for the holiday week we have been open from 8 AM to 11 PM. That may not seem terrible but if you open you have to come an hour early to clean and if you close you have to stay an hour later.

Not only have the hours been ridiculous, people have been out of control. While majority of people are really nice due to it being the holidays and they know it is a crazy time, there are those who usually do not shop and so are stressed out by the craziness. Those are the people that I wish would online shop instead. I have been yelled at about our exchange policy, being too hot in the store, and so many other things. The only positive to this week has been the attractive guys that I typically don’t see in Forever 21. The only bad thing is that most were shopping for their girlfriends…

In the end I am glad that I have tomorrow off, not for the holiday, but just for the mere fact that I can sleep in peace and quiet. No bells going off, no customers with complaints, no cleaning, and no dressing up. Tomorrow you can find me in my bed. I am grateful for my bed. Happy Holidays everyone!

Hide In A Cave Weekend

I worked Black Friday at Forever 21 for my third time. It’s funny because my first day of work at Forever 21 was on Black Friday my junior year of high school and because of that it is easy for me to keep track of my anniversaries of working there. This Black Friday I worked from 5AM to 3 PM. While this may seem crazy to some people we always get 10 hour shifts on Black Friday so most of us are used to it.

My shift was not that bad, I was in the shift where the midnight shoppers were going to sleep and the normal shoppers were finally getting up. Although I heard at midnight that we had insane lines, people banging on our gates to come in early, and all other crazy shenanigans. I understand that there may be deals but at Forever 21 I feel like you are always getting a deal so I really don’t understand the commotion of being there. I will say though that I never felt like we were super busy, until I counted my drawer at the end of the day and realized I had over $14000 in my drawer alone, so I guess we were busy.

Black Friday to me was not that bad. What killed me was the next day. After working Black Friday I went straight downtown with my friends Catrina and Bethany to see the Circle of Lights, which is a tree lighting that downtown Indianapolis does to our Monument Circle.

I got back home and fell asleep right away. The next day (Saturday) I had to work from 11-7 which typically wouldn’t be bad, but I think I overslept from the exhaustion of Friday that Saturday my body felt even worse. I was in such a bad mood, so I feel really bad for the customers that talked to, because I probably seemed completely out of it and uninterested, which typically is not me.

Thankfully I’m back at Butler now, so it’s back to the usual of studying and learning, but I’m starting to realize that I’d rather do that than work any Black Friday.
