Post It Notes Save My Life

As you have probably noticed in past posts or at my lack of even writing post my life is hectic. It is my own fault that I make it as crazy as it is, but I like the constant craziness. However, without Post It notes I don’t know if I would make anything on time or would turn in any assignments on time.

My planner is something I live by. If you ever see me in class my planner is always out and open. At this point I think it is just a comfort thing to have it. With my planner I not only use the dates provided to write down everything I have to do or turn in, but I also have Post It notes everywhere. To a lot of people my Post It notes seem color coordinated or that there is some meaning behind the colors, but that is not the case.

I use Post It notes for everything, especially just to get me through the week. While my planner does help me keep track of things I always have a Post It note on the end of my week to show what I have for the week. This is for social or academics so that I can keep track. For example this is what I have on my Post It note for next week.

Firebelly blog (M)                                ISL blog (T)
Morton Finney mtg (S)                       CMFK bus (Th)
AV sign in (W)                                      SP oral online (F)
IMC tweets (T)                                    ISL Pitch Kit (T)
Wang assignment (W)                        SP oral in class (W)

This is it so far. Thankfully most of these are class related. Obviously I can keep track of my fun stuff because that’s usually what I look forward to! Wish me luck.

A Typical Day In My Life

The other day I spoke on a panel for prospective students and one of the questions that was asked was what a typical day for a student is. While each student has a different schedule I thought it would be nice to share maybe one of my days and how it is blocked off in time. Once again this is not for EVERY student! Each student has very personalized and different schedule, but here is what a typical Tuesday looks like for me.

10 AM – 12 PM: Work at Admissions Office
I am a Butler Student Ambassador, so I give tours to perspective students as well as do office work. My shift is always on Tuesday at this time, which is nice so that I know I will always have this during my week.

12-205 PM: Break Time
From whenever I get home from work to 2:05 I have a break. Typically I just make lunch and either watch TV or take a nap. If it’s an extremely stressful week then usually I study during that time. Sometimes I have to finish a paper for my next class so I spend this break time doing that as well. Today I woke up at 7 AM so I could start on a paper that was due for a class today (I hope my dad doesn’t see this) since I finished it this morning I ate lunch and took a nap!

225 – 505 PM : Strategic Communications – Research Methods
I know this class seems extremely long, and that’s because it is EXTREMELY LONG! However, the nice thing about this class is that it only meets once a week. This is one of my mandatory classes for my major, Strategic Communications. It goes over the different research methods used in the field of PR and Advertising. I don’t mind how long the class is however I have two others classes at night that are this long as well.

505-6 PM: Dinner Break
Typically I do walk back to my apartment because my class from 2:25-5:05 always gets out early, so I actually have a lot of time before my next class to have some dinner. Tonight I changed it up a little and went to C Club with my friend Kaitlin to get dinner before class. Since Fall Break is this week on Thursday and Friday I haven’t bought anymore groceries because there’s no point… so basically I’m scrounging for food! Just in case you didn’t know I don’t live in my sorority house anymore! I live in the apartments on campus so now I have a kitchen that I can cook my own food. No, Butler is not starving me!

6-830 PM: Strategic Communications for Nonprofits
Once again here is another one of my 3 hour classes! In this class we are actually leading a PR campaign for two different nonprofits in the Indianapolis area, so we get a lot of real life experience. This class only meets on Tuesdays, which is the miserable part about the class is the time. However, because of my night classes, that only meet once a week, I am able to have Thursdays off. Having Thursdays off is extremely important for me because then I get to work at my marketing agency job.

830-BED: Relaxing/Studying
Depending on how much stuff I have to do I either go home and hang out with friends/watch TV or study. Right now it’s mostly just hanging out because the load of my work is on Mondays and Tuesdays!

So that’s a typical Tuesday for me. On other days it usually includes meetings for different organizations or even Butler basketball which is coming up, but like I mentioned before not every Butler student is like that. Many people don’t go this late into the night, so it really just depends on whichever student you talk to!

Why Does This Always Happen?

Right before finals week it seems like everyone starts to give you the most ridiculous work ever. I feel like I have a lot, but then when I say it aloud to myself it doesn’t seem that bad. I just have a lot of busy work to do! I’m going to use you to show myself what I have to do!

Freshman Year Seminar: Science and Sustainability
– Write final paper. Already 5 pages done only 3 more to go. Due Thursday

Arts Administration
– Start/Finish Portfolio due whenever scheduled appt. w/prof.

Natural World: World of Plants
– 4 seminar papers due
– 2 current event papers due
– study for lab practical
– study for final

Analytical Reasoning: Win Lose or Draw
– presentation
– study for final

Physical Well Being: Ballet
DONE

JR 112: News Print Writing
– start/finish controversial story due May 5
– rewrite any stories necessary

To you that may seem like a lot, but to me it doesn’t seem that bad. I really only have 2 exams, the rest are just papers. I love writing papers more than exams, because I know I am definitely a better writer than exam taker. I hate exams. So if I don’t blog in the next couple days I’m not dead I’m just trying to make it through my first year of college without my gpa dropping dramatically from the 3.5 that I already have. Wish me luck!

This Is More Like It.

I will admit, I am a busy bee. I love being constantly busy and I love watching my little planner fill up or calendar board fill up. I guess I get this weird satisfaction of knowing I have something scheduled or planned. I love being involved in a lot of things, and at Butler it is so easy to do that.

My schedule from last week in my planner!

Right now I am a Morton Finney Scholar, involved with College Mentor For Kids, and the Emerging Leaders Program. Being a Morton Finney Scholar allows me to participate in many activities around the community and also allows me to benefit the community in ways of leadership and community service.

College Mentors For Kids (CMFK) is awesome. Today we actually get to meet our kids so I am really excited. CMFK is a program that allows college students to mentor inner city kids. I’m sure there will be plenty of blogs where I talk about CMFK, but since today is the first day we meet the kids I don’t know what to expect!

The Emerging Leaders Program is a program where students can learn how to become better leaders in their community and within Butler. We have a meeting every Thursday and also individual meetings with our mentors. My mentor is Amanda she is so nice and it’s so easy to talk with her about the program and just life in general! At our meetings for Emerging Leaders we have guest speakers come in and we do different activities so it is a really awesome program that I am very excited about!

I definitely plan on getting involved with a lot more on campus. Many students say not to get involved with too much, but get involved with a couple organizations. For me, a lot of the programs I am involved in go hand in hand with each other so I feel like I am not overdoing it. I will let you know if it gets worse next semester when I start rushing and sorority life hopefully! Until then, I need to go outside and study it is just too pretty!

Update on my sickness: I’m still sick. I feel terrible for my roommate that has to hear me cough all through the night, and the multiple classes that have to hear me cough all through class. Also anyone that I Skype because I’m sure it sounds lovely to hear that! I bought medicine yesterday so let’s hope it gets better!!

Also check out this awesome video of Butler students (including me!) trying to get Jimmy Fallon back to Butler. For the Super Bowl Jimmy Fallon will be doing 4 shows in Indy and since Jimmy has been to Butler once, we are trying to get him back to Butler! COME BACK TO BUTLER JIMMY! P.S. I am in the second row, check out my awesome dance moves :)
