You Get The Best Of Both Worlds

Ok so maybe not the best of both worlds, more or less I really just wanted to use a Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) song as my title. However, going to a big school in Australia has me really missing my small school back home.  Either way school is school so I’m not going to say I absolutely adore going to class, but I do enjoy some of the classes I’m taking. However, it is a lot different from Butler.

I’m taking four classes while I’m here. They are:
CUL 120: Living Culture
CUL 221: Australian Film & TV
CUL 322: Ab/Normal Bodies
ICOM202: International Communication Campaigns

Don’t let the class numbers fool you. While one of my classes is a 100 level class it is starting to become one of my more difficult classes. This week I’ve been swamped. I’ve have something due everyday this week in every class. However, even with all the madness I really enjoy all of my classes except Living Culture. The lectures drive me insane.

Macquarie library

This is where I’ve been spending most of my time this week with all my assignments. At least my university has an awesome library!

This is where the differences from a big school to a small school come in. When applying to schools as a freshman I knew that a big school wouldn’t do it for me. Now that I’m a junior I’m reminded as to why I thought that. Here at Macquarie you go to a lecture and then later you go to a tutorial which is a smaller setting. However, sometimes in tutorial you only talk about the readings required for the week not the lecture that was discussed earlier.  At Butler your class is a lecture/tutorial combined. You get lectures but with that discussion based setting behind it, which in my opinion is way easier to learn.

The biggest thing is that you know when you hear teachers say “However many credit hours you should be doubling for work outside class” Well here that is the truth. Back home there are so many assignments/assessments that while it is necessary to keep up with readings and such you almost don’t realize it because the assignments and assessments are keeping you up to speed. Here you never have assignments and very rarely assessments so at that point it’s all up to you. While it’s nice to have freedom I’m way more structured than that, so it has taken some getting used to.

I’m glad I’ve waited until junior year to study abroad, because I honestly don’t think as a freshmen and even a sophomore I would have been mature enough to have fun and focus on what I’m here for, which is still school! I’m sure there are others that have more self control than myself. Anyway my mid semester break starts next week and I can’t wait to share with you guys all of my trips!

I’m Not Ready To Be A Senior

Recently I got an email about registering for fall classes, and I almost cried. In the fall I will finally be a senior. It is so strange that when you start school in kindergarten you think high school is so far you don’t even think you’ll make it. Now it is strange to think that within a year I will be graduating from college. Not only that but a university that has given me more than I could have ever thought of.

One awesome thing though is that I thought going abroad would force me to take 18 credit hour semesters for senior year. After looking things over I only have to do 15 credit hour semesters, which is so relieving. While I am looking forward to the future in my career it’s still hard to think that the coming year will be my last at Butler. When I look back at everything I’ve done it’s crazy to think that it’s almost over. As a freshman everyone always told me that these four years would be the best of my life, but they would go quickly. They were right.

Next year I will be finishing up my degree in Strategic Communication with a focus in Public Relations, and hopefully will be receiving a minor in Media, Rhetoric, and Culture (I’m only three classes away!). However, Butler has been much more to me so far than receiving a degree. It has allowed me to meet an amazing group of women in my sorority, Pi Beta Phi. It has shown me a community of care through all the amazing people that attend Butler and work at Butler. Not only that it has taught me skills through the many organization I am involved with.

While it may be time to register for my final year at Butler it is not time to stop having fun. Obviously, I’m in Australia! Until graduation day comes I will be enjoying everyday I possibly can as a student at Butler.

Also I know it’s getting a little warmer back home, so here’s a song to get you pumped for the summer!

Are You #ButlerBound?

Admission packets went out last Friday, and this year admissions meant a little more to me. Working in the office of admission I got to help pack and stuff all the packets that were sent out! I can only hope that the excitement I experienced when finding out I got into Butler is the same excitement you experienced!

While the decision process isn’t always easy, and some of you will be debating between 2 or more schools I sincerely hope you consider Butler. Personally I couldn’t see myself anywhere but Butler. These past 2 1/2 years at Butler have showed me that I really did pick the best school for me. That’s what really matters. Don’t go where all your friends are going just because they are going there. Don’t go where everyone thinks will be the best fit for you. Follow your gut, and hopefully it will lead you to Butler ;)

In the next few weeks I will start to share more about the things I love about Butler. If you care to look at some of my past posts such as: Things I Take For Granted: Butler Edition or The Top Three Reasons you will start to get an idea of the reasons a lot of people love Butler. If you have any questions about Butler please feel free to comment! I will try and respond to each and every one of you. Happy holidays everyone!

A Typical Day In My Life

The other day I spoke on a panel for prospective students and one of the questions that was asked was what a typical day for a student is. While each student has a different schedule I thought it would be nice to share maybe one of my days and how it is blocked off in time. Once again this is not for EVERY student! Each student has very personalized and different schedule, but here is what a typical Tuesday looks like for me.

10 AM – 12 PM: Work at Admissions Office
I am a Butler Student Ambassador, so I give tours to perspective students as well as do office work. My shift is always on Tuesday at this time, which is nice so that I know I will always have this during my week.

12-205 PM: Break Time
From whenever I get home from work to 2:05 I have a break. Typically I just make lunch and either watch TV or take a nap. If it’s an extremely stressful week then usually I study during that time. Sometimes I have to finish a paper for my next class so I spend this break time doing that as well. Today I woke up at 7 AM so I could start on a paper that was due for a class today (I hope my dad doesn’t see this) since I finished it this morning I ate lunch and took a nap!

225 – 505 PM : Strategic Communications – Research Methods
I know this class seems extremely long, and that’s because it is EXTREMELY LONG! However, the nice thing about this class is that it only meets once a week. This is one of my mandatory classes for my major, Strategic Communications. It goes over the different research methods used in the field of PR and Advertising. I don’t mind how long the class is however I have two others classes at night that are this long as well.

505-6 PM: Dinner Break
Typically I do walk back to my apartment because my class from 2:25-5:05 always gets out early, so I actually have a lot of time before my next class to have some dinner. Tonight I changed it up a little and went to C Club with my friend Kaitlin to get dinner before class. Since Fall Break is this week on Thursday and Friday I haven’t bought anymore groceries because there’s no point… so basically I’m scrounging for food! Just in case you didn’t know I don’t live in my sorority house anymore! I live in the apartments on campus so now I have a kitchen that I can cook my own food. No, Butler is not starving me!

6-830 PM: Strategic Communications for Nonprofits
Once again here is another one of my 3 hour classes! In this class we are actually leading a PR campaign for two different nonprofits in the Indianapolis area, so we get a lot of real life experience. This class only meets on Tuesdays, which is the miserable part about the class is the time. However, because of my night classes, that only meet once a week, I am able to have Thursdays off. Having Thursdays off is extremely important for me because then I get to work at my marketing agency job.

830-BED: Relaxing/Studying
Depending on how much stuff I have to do I either go home and hang out with friends/watch TV or study. Right now it’s mostly just hanging out because the load of my work is on Mondays and Tuesdays!

So that’s a typical Tuesday for me. On other days it usually includes meetings for different organizations or even Butler basketball which is coming up, but like I mentioned before not every Butler student is like that. Many people don’t go this late into the night, so it really just depends on whichever student you talk to!

My Parents Would Be So Proud

In high school people always say that junior year is the hardest year. I never realized that applied to college. The start of junior year I felt like I was drowning in school work, and I still kind of feel that way. However, I feel like I am starting to get a grasp on my classes a little bit more.

I’m not going to lie the past couple of years at Butler I probably could have done a lot better school wise. My parents probably hate reading that sentence, but I probably could have studied a little more. I’m not saying my grades are terrible I have all A’s and B’s, but I probably could have had all A’s. This year my parents can be so proud in knowing that me and Irwin (one of the libraries on campus) are becoming best friends. I’m not really happy with the fact that I have a “spot” in Irwin now, but seriously… don’t take my spot in Irwin.

Irwin

Irwin Library!

I will even tell you my spot in Irwin. It’s second floor when you come up the stairs on the left and the second table in the stacks. Yes, that’s how many times I go to Irwin now. My friends are starting to wonder if something happened to me. I have always studied but now I’m even staying in on Friday nights sometimes. Even I have began to wonder what is wrong with me, but now I think I have things pretty down pat so I don’t have to do any more Friday nights.

A lot of my days I have huge breaks in the middle so I have been going to Irwin to get things done and out of the way. My freshmen and sophomore year I would have never done that. I always left studying to late at night, and while I still do study late at night I do way more during the day than I ever have before. So I guess you could say little me is growing up and becoming more responsible. Did I mention I turn 21 in a month? Real life is scary kids.

For a little fun and since I love Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake, here’s some lessons on End Zone Dancing.

Third Times A Charm

I’ve taken a little hiatus from blogging as you can see, but I’m back now! I couldn’t be more excited but also bittersweet at the same time to say that I am a JUNIOR this year. Time definitely flies by in college and so while I’m trying to enjoy myself it’s weird to see some of my friends graduate early or even the seniors becoming depressed about not wanting to leave.

Anyway as I start to settle into being in school, there are a couple things I wanted to share with you about my summer! The last time I posted I was just starting my summer break, and shared with you some of my goals. Well this summer I learned A LOT. I started working for a social media marketing agency called Firebelly Marketing. It’s awesome and I actually am still working there during the Fall semester. Basically my summer was split between Firebelly and Butler. If you didn’t know I am a Butler Student Ambassador so I give tours to people who visit our campus, who knows you may have me as your tour guide!

Some of the awesome people I work with at Firebelly!

While I did work a lot during the summer, trust me I still had fun. Oddly enough Indy’s summer concerts are still going on. During the summer I went to the Wiz Khalifa concert, which also had B.o.B, Trinidad James, and A$AP Rocky. As always I saw Dave Matthews Band. I will start having post in the coming weeks about concerts and definitely share photos and videos!

I also mentioned at the end of last semester my goal of studying abroad. That is soon becoming a reality. Just this week I turned in my application for study abroad! I’m so excited! While summer time is always a good time I will say I am glad to be back home at Butler. I am already struggling in classes, but the positive side is that I am starting to finally balance everything out. It’s strange to say but I can tell that I am kind of growing up. I seriously hope my dad doesn’t see this because he will make so much fun of me for saying that.

Basically the whole point of this was to say I’m back, so expect a concert blog at least once a week because I have so much to catch everyone up on when it comes to concerts. Also expect a blog once a week that will be showing you how my life is becoming to chaotic and I probably should be less involved… ha who am I kidding! Can’t wait to share with you guys my third year here at Butler!
