Being raised in Indianapolis I have been spoiled with good sports. I will admit our sports teams have not always been great or have this long history of awesomeness, but I will say I am lucky to live in a city that has a professional football and basketball team. I’m grateful to live in a city that is known to the world as having the greatest spectacle in racing (Indy 500), but even better I’m grateful that I was able to grow up with such an amazing quarterback, Peyton Manning.
Last night was the first time Peyton Manning had been back to Lucas Oil Stadium since he left the Colts for the Broncos. When Manning left many of us in Indianapolis were sad by the news. Trust me ,I was depressed just like everyone else. Everyone in Indy loved and still loves Manning. The evidence was clear last night when fans were sporting Broncos Manning jerseys or making compromised Jerseys of Colts/Broncos. However, while I do love Peyton my loyalty is with the Colts.
I will always cheer for the Colts no matter what the season record, what Jim Irsay says, or how many Chicago Bears fans I have to argue with at Butler that the Colts are better. (There are a lot of Bears fans at Butler…) Although I will say thank you to Peyton Manning. Bob Kravitz, a writer for the Indianapolis Star, says Thank you in a way that I can’t compete with, but here is all my thank you’s to Peyton. Thank you Peyton for
- showing me amazing football
- teaching me more and more about football when I was a little girl
- letting me laugh so hard until my stomach hurts when you were on Saturday Night Live. – being an amazing person to this city that I call home.
- the memories at every game that I got to see you play
- being a class act
And that’s it. People think it’s harsh that last night I was only rooting for the Colts and not Peyton. But to me it’s about the team. Yes I loved Manning and I still do love Manning, but I was raised as a COLTS fan, not a MANNING fan. So while Manning will always be someone I admire as a football fan, the Colts will always come first in my book.
But one last Peyton thing… he’s proud of Butler and cheers us on… so maybe it was like 3 years ago. Not the point.
