Uhm, Hi I’m American

Today I gave my first presentation for class. Needless to say I was the most nervous I’ve ever been. The idea of people thinking I’m a dumb American girl keeps coming to mind. On top of that my presentation was over Indigenous themes seen in film and TV. Let me break this down for you a bit.

1. I didn’t even know Indigenous vs non Indigenous people was still an issue here
2. We never discuss Australian indigenous topics in America
3. I initially thought the presentation was a group presentation not solo.

After realizing I was going to be on my own for this presentation I started to have a massive panic attack. Back in the states presentations are not that difficult for me. While I do get nervous it was nothing like how I was today. Presentations in the states is something I do a lot because of my major. We have to present our ideas and what we think with different campaigns. This was different. I don’t know much about aborigines nor do I know much about Australian film and TV so combining the two caused me to freak out.

I honestly think I made it way more difficult than it was, but either way I finally completed it. I really wanted to start out my presentation by saying “Hi I’m American… please be nice to me” Instead I went along with what I had planned. I think everything turned out pretty good. I saw the nods from my tutor as he seemed pleased by what I was presenting. It was the biggest weight lifted off my shoulders when I finished. Now I can listen to everyone else present as I relax. Thank goodness.

Just an update about events, tomorrow I’m going to go wine tasting in Hunter Valley and pet koalas and kangaroos! Obviously I will be posting pictures of that! Until then I’m jealous of all of you who are able to watch March Madness. Watch for me!

Is Butler Too Small or Just Right?

When picking a university to attend it can almost seem like you are Goldilocks and the Three Bears. There are a lot of things you have to try and see what is the best fit for you. Once you find the best fit you realize it is just right.

I know there are many of you who are probably still doing exactly what Goldilocks did and trying to figure out what is the best fit for you. A question I hear a lot while giving tours is if Butler is too small? Do I see the same people all the time? The simple answer is no. Let me give you the more in depth answer.

Coming from a large high school, over 3200 students, I felt that Butler would be too small for me. I love meeting new people and getting to know others, so I thought that this would be like high school all over again. Even though I felt this way I just ignored it and still chose Butler. I have never regretted that decision. Yes, Butler is small, but it is just right. I can walk to class and know people on the way there, but I can also walk into a classroom and not know people. To say at Butler everyone knows everyone is extreme. Most of the students do know a lot of people, but it is because most of us are involved in a lot of different activities.

My graduating class!

My high school graduation of 600-700 people.

For the most part you could say Butler is how you make it. At Butler I am meeting someone new everyday. There are some of us who do know a lot of people and we would love to know even more people on campus. There are also those who have chose to stick with their core group of friends and are not involved with much, but still have a great time. The point is you can make Butler however you want. Butler doesn’t change you, but rather makes you a better version of yourself.

I hope that you can call Butler home just as so many of us have.

What’s In My Backpack?

I am clearly losing my mind when my blog posts are now becoming about what’s in my backpack. However it is true that I am losing my mind because lately all I can think about is how complicated my study abroad plan has become, but that is a completely different story. Lately, I have been doing really cheesy blogs, so I thought instead of doing another cheesy blog I would let you know what’s in my backpack.

This thought came up because I see this in magazines sometimes where they ask a celebrity what’s in their bag… Yes I know I’m not a celebrity or as cool as a celebrity, it’s fine. Just go with the flow on this one. Also I’m just going to go in the sections of my bag, because I have a lot of stuff in my bag and we could be here for a while if I do every individual thing.

Top Pocket:
Headphones, EOS lip balm, pens/pencils, Butler basketball tickets, change
All of these items are extremely important, but if I would have to pick one thing that I want to talk to you about it is my EOS lip balm. I realize this sounds ridiculous considering I had basketball tickets in my backpack, but you probably are tired of hearing me talk about Butler basketball. EOS LIP BALM IS AMAZING. For one you can get your entire mouth in one swoop. It’s like a two for one. Also it’s packaging is so cute, which I don’t see why that matters but it’s awesome and I love it. Just try it, it’s around $3 at Walgreens and it’s worth it.

eosSide note: Found out that EOS stands for Evolution of Smooth while writing this so that should tell you something.

Main Pocket:
Study abroad per-departure packet, Spanish book, Spanish notebook, planner
This is very typical of what you’ll see in my backpack on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. If you know me then you know that I live by my planner. I am probably a planning addict. That doesn’t sound good when I say it like that, BUT I love my planner, and I feel so much better when everything is laid out. Just try it if you feel stressed out. Plus I might have splurged a little on my planner, so I think it’s really pretty. I know you are probably judging me right now. That’s fine, I know I’m a weirdo when it comes to the planner situation.

This is my Vera Bradley planner that I love.

So this is what happens when I’m stressed out and don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. I write really weird things, so for your sake and my sake I hope that the light at the end of the tunnel for study abroad becomes clear. Until then my posts might start to get weirder….

A Typical Day In My Life

The other day I spoke on a panel for prospective students and one of the questions that was asked was what a typical day for a student is. While each student has a different schedule I thought it would be nice to share maybe one of my days and how it is blocked off in time. Once again this is not for EVERY student! Each student has very personalized and different schedule, but here is what a typical Tuesday looks like for me.

10 AM – 12 PM: Work at Admissions Office
I am a Butler Student Ambassador, so I give tours to perspective students as well as do office work. My shift is always on Tuesday at this time, which is nice so that I know I will always have this during my week.

12-205 PM: Break Time
From whenever I get home from work to 2:05 I have a break. Typically I just make lunch and either watch TV or take a nap. If it’s an extremely stressful week then usually I study during that time. Sometimes I have to finish a paper for my next class so I spend this break time doing that as well. Today I woke up at 7 AM so I could start on a paper that was due for a class today (I hope my dad doesn’t see this) since I finished it this morning I ate lunch and took a nap!

225 – 505 PM : Strategic Communications – Research Methods
I know this class seems extremely long, and that’s because it is EXTREMELY LONG! However, the nice thing about this class is that it only meets once a week. This is one of my mandatory classes for my major, Strategic Communications. It goes over the different research methods used in the field of PR and Advertising. I don’t mind how long the class is however I have two others classes at night that are this long as well.

505-6 PM: Dinner Break
Typically I do walk back to my apartment because my class from 2:25-5:05 always gets out early, so I actually have a lot of time before my next class to have some dinner. Tonight I changed it up a little and went to C Club with my friend Kaitlin to get dinner before class. Since Fall Break is this week on Thursday and Friday I haven’t bought anymore groceries because there’s no point… so basically I’m scrounging for food! Just in case you didn’t know I don’t live in my sorority house anymore! I live in the apartments on campus so now I have a kitchen that I can cook my own food. No, Butler is not starving me!

6-830 PM: Strategic Communications for Nonprofits
Once again here is another one of my 3 hour classes! In this class we are actually leading a PR campaign for two different nonprofits in the Indianapolis area, so we get a lot of real life experience. This class only meets on Tuesdays, which is the miserable part about the class is the time. However, because of my night classes, that only meet once a week, I am able to have Thursdays off. Having Thursdays off is extremely important for me because then I get to work at my marketing agency job.

830-BED: Relaxing/Studying
Depending on how much stuff I have to do I either go home and hang out with friends/watch TV or study. Right now it’s mostly just hanging out because the load of my work is on Mondays and Tuesdays!

So that’s a typical Tuesday for me. On other days it usually includes meetings for different organizations or even Butler basketball which is coming up, but like I mentioned before not every Butler student is like that. Many people don’t go this late into the night, so it really just depends on whichever student you talk to!

Almost There

I have not been able to blog a lot, because it seems like all I am doing lately is either finishing projects or studying for finals. It is that time of the year where everything is starting to wrap. Seniors are starting to realize their time is coming to an end. Freshmen can’t believe they’ve made it through one year of college, and here I sit thinking about how half of my undergraduate is almost done.

It is a little depressing when you think about it. Every time I see families touring Butler I get a little jealous, because they are in that stage of excitement when you realize that you are finally going to college. I remember my registration day at Butler and how I couldn’t imagine that I would ever be here, and now that I am here I just want to continuously relive freshmen year. I am pretty sure though that my parents would not enjoy me reliving freshmen year over and over with how much money they would be spending, but Butler was free I would do it over and over again except for the finals part.

While finals do tend to stress people out, they are not that bad. We don’t have classes so it is just completely time to study. It just depends if you spend that time wisely. I am not going to lie I’m a little stressed out  because I’m not a big test person, but either way finals must go on, so if you take a final and think man I just failed that just always think “On to the next one”

The Busiest Day EVER.

Today I have so much going on. I have actually already done a lot, and it’s only 11 am. Last night I didn’t go to sleep until 3 am. Lately I haven’t been able to sleep normally! This morning I woke up at 9 and got ready. I went to my sister’s to drop off some things that I borrowed from her and also got my new backpack!

my new backpack

Currently I am back on campus helping my friend Billy with my other friend Trey for our exploratory portfolios. These portfolios take forever, which can be really annoying, and also a lot of people don’t know how to use the program so that’s not very helpful! Anyway, after helping Billy we have exploratory class at noon. I mine as well just show my schedule like I usually do.

Now – 1150: Help Billy with portfolio
12 – 1250: Exploratory Class
1-215: Filming for FYS project
225-340: Sex Gender Sexuality Class
345-600: College Mentors For Kids
630-730: Waiting outside to get inside for Butler vs Xavier on ESPN
9 – 11: BUTLER VS XAVIER LIVE ON ESPN!

Basically I have yet to figure out when I am going to be fitting in food in this whole day. I made a sandwich, but that’s for lunch so dinner is looking kind of grim. It is kind of unfortunate how into sports I am and how few girls are not. I think I might have a slight addiction to Butler basketball. Anyway wish me luck if you don’t hear from me for a while I probably died from excitement or exhaustion at the game.. just kidding.

GO DAWGS!
