Music Monday: Grammy Edition

Last night I watched the Grammys, which I hardly ever do. A lot of the artists I listen to are never on the Grammys, so I never really seen any point, but last night I thought why not. I mostly watched the Grammys because I didn’t feel like crying through the Bachelor Sean and Catherine’s wedding. Yes, I’m that person.

There were 3 amazing performances in my opinion. I think two of them are pretty obvious.

#1. Beyonce ft Jay Z – Drunk in Love
My Beyonce obsession just recently started. I don’t know why but I never really felt the whole Beyonce craze thing, but her new album I just can’t. It is so good, and then her performance on the Grammys just killed it. I don’t know why they put her as the first performer because then after that I almost felt like the show was over.

#2. Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons
THIS WAS SO AMAZING. SERIOUSLY AMAZING. I saw both Kendrick and Imagine Dragons this past summer and they were so good individually that when I heard they were collaborating I was so happy. If you didn’t know I have a thing for rap so Kendrick was a given, and then after seeing Imagine Dragons in concert they totally changed my opinion on them. If you have the chance of seeing these two live you have to do it!

#3. Daft Punk ft Pharrell and Stevie Wonder
It doesn’t get much better than this. Even if you aren’t fans of Daft Punk who doesn’t love Stevie Wonder? There’s not much to say for this one besides you’re going to want to get up and dance to this.

There were obviously other performances that were awesome too. John Legend’s performance broke my heart because of how sweet it was. I really liked Kacey Musgrave however where they placed her performance was unfortunate!

What did you think about last night’s performances?

Commuters Deserve A Gold Star

In exactly one month I leave for Sydney, Australia. To say I am excited is an understatement. Until then I am living in the comforts of my home at my mom’s house. This is all fine and dandy, and I love getting a good laugh from my mom, but seriously I don’t know how commuters live off campus.

I have never lived off campus during my time at Butler. My parents gave me the space I needed and I have been able to experience everything I wanted which was living on campus. For some people living on campus isn’t a big deal, but after my siblings went to a college where commuting was common I knew I wanted to live on campus. Living at home wouldn’t be so bad, but every time I want to see my friends I forget they are all back at Butler.

Thankfully for me I only live 20-30 minutes away from Butler depending on traffic. However, driving back and forth all the time is not ideal because of gas, so I have to be really careful about how many times I actually go to Butler during the week. On top of all this I’m not taking classes right now so even walking around campus without a backpack is also weird.

Commuters I don’t know how you do it but you deserve a gold star. I definitely suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out), so not being on campus is driving me nuts! At least there’s only one month left until I leave for beautiful Australia!

Weekend Update: Introducing Sophia and A Butler Win!

This past weekend was pretty exciting to say the least. On Friday my sister and her husband had their first child! Sophia Kumiko was born at 441 PM, and she is the most precious girl I have ever seen. Everyone in our family is so excited, and now I can say that I have 2 nieces and 2 nephews!

photo 1(1)

My niece, Sophia!

After seeing Sophia at the hospital on Friday night I rushed to campus to see my sorority sisters! It was one of our sisters 22nd birthday. We had a ton of fun and even sang to Living on a Prayer, so I guess it doesn’t get much better than that. I also learned that iPhone’s can last in the snow for over 4 hours… no worries everyone it wasn’t my phone just my best friend’s phone :) On top of all that I FINALLY GOT TO SEE MY BIG SIS. She was gone in Spain last semester so seeing her was awesome.

I was pretty much excited for everyday of this weekend, but all for different reasons. Saturday I was excited because it was the first basketball game I have been to in a very long time! With winter break and recruitment I missed a good 2-3 games, which is a lot for me. We really needed a win in the Big East on Saturday, and we got it in overtime. On top of that I gave Trip, our mascot, his bone at the beginning of the game. I’m so proud that he doesn’t drop his bone anymore!

Butler vs Marquette; win in overtime!

All in all it was a pretty good weekend. I miss not living on campus anymore, but being able to go back on the weekends isn’t too shabby. Expect a post about me complaining about this. Until then have a great Monday!

Is Butler Too Small or Just Right?

When picking a university to attend it can almost seem like you are Goldilocks and the Three Bears. There are a lot of things you have to try and see what is the best fit for you. Once you find the best fit you realize it is just right.

I know there are many of you who are probably still doing exactly what Goldilocks did and trying to figure out what is the best fit for you. A question I hear a lot while giving tours is if Butler is too small? Do I see the same people all the time? The simple answer is no. Let me give you the more in depth answer.

Coming from a large high school, over 3200 students, I felt that Butler would be too small for me. I love meeting new people and getting to know others, so I thought that this would be like high school all over again. Even though I felt this way I just ignored it and still chose Butler. I have never regretted that decision. Yes, Butler is small, but it is just right. I can walk to class and know people on the way there, but I can also walk into a classroom and not know people. To say at Butler everyone knows everyone is extreme. Most of the students do know a lot of people, but it is because most of us are involved in a lot of different activities.

My graduating class!

My high school graduation of 600-700 people.

For the most part you could say Butler is how you make it. At Butler I am meeting someone new everyday. There are some of us who do know a lot of people and we would love to know even more people on campus. There are also those who have chose to stick with their core group of friends and are not involved with much, but still have a great time. The point is you can make Butler however you want. Butler doesn’t change you, but rather makes you a better version of yourself.

I hope that you can call Butler home just as so many of us have.

Tune In Tuesday

Can’t you tell I’m getting just so crafty with titles for my blogs? Just kidding.

Lately my friend Trai and I seem to just DJ for each other. Some of the songs on this list are songs he found and some are ones that I found. Either way we have come to the conclusion that our jobs after college should be the people who produce the top 10 artists to watch for the new year. Don’t get your hopes up. Trai is pharmacy so this dynamic duo probably will not happen. Until then why not check out my top 4 songs right now!

#1. Love Me Again – John Newman
Newman is a singer from the UK. Love Me Again is his new hit that top the charts in the UK. His voice is obvious that he’s foreign but I can’t help but love the piano in the background that just makes it so catchy. Plus who doesn’t love some songs they can just move their head to?

#2. Perfect Form – Cyril Hahn ft Shy Girls
The best way for me to describe this song to anyone is imagine yourself in some super chic all white gallery in Sweden. Then add this song in the music and you will feel right at home. It has this really airy feel to it and on top of that the artist voice is just too smooth. Yes, I realize I describe my songs in really weird ways.

#3. This Head I Hold – Electric Guest
If you haven’t guessed after listening to this song I clearly like my songs that have this old school vibe to it. This song has been featured in some commercials so when I finally figured out what it was I was really excited! Take a listen and see if you like it too!

#4. Bloodflows – Sohn
I’ve mentioned Sohn before, but I can’t stop listening to all of his songs. Here is a new one he has just released. I realize this list is a little more chilled out than most of my lists so I’ll try to pump it up next time, but this song is awesome to listen to when you’re just hanging out or when you are driving at night time and just want something really relaxing. The most disappointing thing about this song is that I can’t here it live yet! Sohn isn’t touring yet, sad times.

My Life Without Wifi

If you are not aware of the weather that is happening in the Midwest, you are either literally living in a cave, which I am grateful that you come out of the cave to read my blog, or you live in a different country. However for the rest of us we are aware of the snow apocalypse. In the Midwest we have been hammered with snow and now we are experiencing extreme temperatures. Today we were colder than the south pole… how does that even happen?

snow

The parking lot at the Indianapolis airport today.

Within all this madness many people lost power. Fortunately the house I am staying at was not one of those, but we lost one major thing. Wifi. Yes, we lost the internet. I understand this is a huge first world problem, but when this storm hit I planned out days of Netflix. Not to mention a lot of my work for my job is dealt with online. Our wifi disappeared on Sunday night. This meant that my friends and I had to figure out new ways to entertain ourselves. I realize how pathetic this sounds, but in all honesty we had no idea what to do. We watched lots of TV and played way too much Mario Kart and Mario Party.

Today Kristina and I decided to finally venture out into the world. While the roads are not great they are at least somewhat drivable now. When we got back from our mini adventure Kristina saw that finally the wifi had returned! Finally I can finish some things I needed to work on, blog to you about the crazy snow, and go back to my life of being anti social except on social media. Just kidding ;)

Anyway recruitment training officially starts tomorrow, so no more snow days for me! I never thought I would say this, but I can not just sit around and do nothing every day. I was starting to lose my mind. I hope everyone continues to stay safe and warm!

Catch Ya Later 2013

While it may be 2014 already I still feel that 2013 deserves a proper goodbye. I couldn’t think of a better way than blogging! A lot happened in 2013, but I’m excited to see what happens in the coming year. However, I’m trying to live in the moment since everyone who knows me knows I like to plan a little too much! Below are a few of my favorite moments of the 2013 year! (in no particular order)

#1. College Game Day
I mentioned this in my previous post, but College Game Day was probably the best day of Butler basketball I’ve ever witnessed. The Final Four runs happened before I was at Butler, so those of us who didn’t get to personally witness those games can agree that the whole experience that comes with College Game Day was amazing. That Butler vs Gonzaga game will be a game that I will never forget. I still get chills watching this video.

#2. Recruitment/Bid Day/Big Little Reveal
While I still cannot say what house I’m in yet (one week left), recruitment was one of my favorite weeks! Last year was my first time experiencing recruitment from the side of being in the sorority, and now this year I will be experiencing it in a different way again as a recruitment counselor! Being able to get littles and do all of the traditional sorority stuff was so exciting. I can’t wait to be able to wear my letters again!

#3. Meeting my nephew
Last year on Valentine’s Day, my nephew Stanley was born! He is so cute, and I’m so thankful to have him in my life. Now I’m excited to meet my niece, Sophia, in a couple weeks! I’m so excited for my siblings and the families they are starting!

Meeting my nephew for the first time!

#4. Concerts/Sporting Events in Indy
This year I feel like I went to an overload of events in Indy. I can’t complain I loved every minute it of it. From seeing Dave Matthews to being able to accept a check for College Mentors for Kids on the court at the Pacers game I can say that I am one lucky girl. That’s one awesome thing about Butler being in Indy is the amount of events we get to experience as students here. Check out my other blogs about Imagine Dragons, and Mumford and Sons.

On the court at halftime!

Receiving a check from Indianapolis Lighting and Power at the Bulls vs Pacers Game was awesome!

#5. #twentyfun
Turning 21 was  one of the most fun nights I had with my closest friends. I loved being able to go out with majority of my friends (sorry not 21ers!). I’m not going to lie it is nice to order a drink while out to dinner, but also still a little weird to drink with my parents. Cheers everyone!

With my friends for my 21st!

While 2013 was awesome, I will say there was one sad point that all Butler students can agree on. The loss of Blue 2 was something that was very heavy on the hearts of everyone at Butler. While we now have Trip a lot of us had grown to love Blue 2. We will always miss Blue 2. He lived a great a life. Seeing 2 Final Fours and becoming America’s favorite dog isn’t too shabby.

Nice to know ya 2013, but here I come 2014.

Brad Stevens Officially Leaves Butler

I am not in denial. I realize that Brad left in the middle of summer and went to the Celtics. However there is one piece of Brad that was still left behind in my possession. That one piece of Brad would be a giant size cardboard version of his head.

If you watched Butler on College Gameday when we had the amazing game versus Gonzaga then you probably saw the giant size cut outs of people like Brad Stevens, Gordon Hayward, Matt Howard, Blue 2, and so on. I was lucky to get a cut out of Brad Stevens. However, it is ridiculously large so finding a place to keep it has been difficult. This is why many times I end up putting Brad in a window. Some people love looking up and seeing Brad staring down at them. While others are freaked out by it. Either way I’ve enjoyed the time with my Brad Stevens cut out.

part of the Brad Stevens cutout and I on ESPN.

This past semester I lived in apartment village, which are apartments on Butler’s campus. In our window that looked out over the Butler bowl I decided to place my Brad Stevens cut out just to freak some people out, and also so Brad could continue to look over Hinkle.

A couple weeks ago we got a lot of snow! After a couple days of snow people started to throw snowballs at Brad, so my roommates and I thought why not put a sign in our window with “Can You Hit Brad?” While we thought this was an amazing idea it scared us most of the time because we never knew when someone would start throwing snowballs at our window. Nonetheless it provided my roommates and I with some entertainment as well as Butler students, visitors for basketball games, and whoever else decided to join our fun.

It was good while it lasted, and unfortunately I can’t take Brad to Australia. So goodbye Brad, who knows when he’ll pop up next!

So fortunate to see Brad coaching the Celtics while playing against the Pacers!

Are You #ButlerBound?

Admission packets went out last Friday, and this year admissions meant a little more to me. Working in the office of admission I got to help pack and stuff all the packets that were sent out! I can only hope that the excitement I experienced when finding out I got into Butler is the same excitement you experienced!

butlerbound

While the decision process isn’t always easy, and some of you will be debating between 2 or more schools I sincerely hope you consider Butler. Personally I couldn’t see myself anywhere but Butler. These past 2 1/2 years at Butler have showed me that I really did pick the best school for me. That’s what really matters. Don’t go where all your friends are going just because they are going there. Don’t go where everyone thinks will be the best fit for you. Follow your gut, and hopefully it will lead you to Butler ;)

In the next few weeks I will start to share more about the things I love about Butler. If you care to look at some of my past posts such as: Things I Take For Granted: Butler Edition or The Top Three Reasons you will start to get an idea of the reasons a lot of people love Butler. If you have any questions about Butler please feel free to comment! I will try and respond to each and every one of you. Happy holidays everyone!

Tune/Turn In Tuesday

So I have definitely been slacking on the blogs, but I PROMISE from here on out things are going to be amazing, because after finals week is over I have 2 months of break time. Well not exactly break time. Once finals are done I will take a little break and then go straight to working 30-40 hours a week at my marketing job before I leave for Australia. Yes, everything has officially been approved and I will be leaving for Australia in February! Get excited!

Since most of my finals has involved more writing and less studying (most of my finals are papers/presentations I only have 1 exam!) I thought I would share with you some of the songs I have been listening to keep me motivated and push through this week of craziness. Hope you guys enjoy and good luck to anyone out there still going through finals week!

#1. Explosions in the Sky – Your Hand In MineThis is the perfect song to listen to over and over if you are writing paper. There are no words so you can really focus on what you are doing. To me this song even without words has a lot of emotion to it, but it really allows me to not sing along. Instead, I listen to this song whenever I have to write a long paper like I did yesterday for my 8-10 page research paper!

YouTube Preview Image

#2. Tove Lo – Habits (Hippie Sabotage Remix)
The original to this song is just as good as the remix, but I can’t stop listening to the remix. I love listening to this song because of the beat and the singers voice. For that reason I usually can’t listen to this song while writing, so I  listened to it while working on my design project yesterday.

YouTube Preview Image

#3. So High – Ghost Loft
This song has a really chilled out and relaxed vibe to it, which is so helpful for writing papers. There’s no really crazy singing or anything like that just this very cool, airy type of song that can make you feel like you aren’t stuck in a library for 6-8 hours, which is nice.

YouTube Preview Image

Sorry guys I’m sticking to only 3 songs this time, because I still have a final due at 12 PM tomorrow and I haven’t made the progress I would like. Also I’m currently at the downtown library trying not to fall asleep… Happy Finals Week everyone!
