About Me:

Hi I'm Katie, I am a sophomore at Butler! I am a Strategic Communications major with a focus in Public Relations. I love being involved in campus and hold positions in College Mentors for Kids and Dawg Pound. I am also a Butler Student Ambassador, Morton Finney Scholar, and a Recruitment Counselor. In my spare time, I am usually hanging out with friends, making up new phrases, or tweeting.

Why I Can’t Study At StarBucks

On campus Starbucks is usually a place where lots of people meet up for group projects, to work on any homework they may have, or just to hang out during a break between classes. Unfortunately I can’t do that. For that matter any social area on campus does not work for me to focus on school work.

Inside the Starbucks at Butler

A lot of my friends say I know everyone on campus, which is clearly an over exaggeration, but I do know quite a few people and I am not going to lie every time I see someone I know I always want to say hi. That’s how most of campus is. You usually see someone you know walking to class and if you don’t you almost wonder if anyone is going to class.

Being a small campus and knowing a lot of people, Starbucks never works for me because every time someone walks in the door I feel like I need to see if it is someone I know, which means I am doing this every 2 seconds. Starbucks is not only a place to do all the things I said earlier in the blog, but it’s also a way to get to our dining courts, which means people are going through there all the time.

I guess I should mention it’s not just Starbucks I can’t study in, but on warm days everyone goes out on the mall. I can’t do that either. Basically any place where I could see people that I usually don’t see on a regular basis I cannot study, which is why you will most likely find me stashed away in my sorority dining room or in my room with headphones on.

The mall on campus!

So I guess being social is now becoming a problem…

This Is Going Too Fast

I can’t believe that I’m already in my second semester as a sophomore. It’s insane to think that at the end of this semester I will be registering for junior classes! This semester I’m starting to get even more into my major and I really like it! Here are the classes I am taking this semester and what I think about all of them so far!

SP 102: Spanish 102
T,W,Th,F 9-950
I have not decided yet if I like the shorter class time and 4 days a week or the longer class time 2 days a week like my Spanish 101 was. Either way I’m really excited to learn more Spanish because my plan is to go to Spain ASAP! I love traveling and so study abroad is something I want to do while at Butler. I really like my professor as well. She’s really helpful and understanding!

GHS 205: Global and Historical Studies – East Asian Interactions
T,Th 11- 1215
GHS is part of Butler’s Core which means this class is something everyone must take. East Asian Interactions is not the only topic you can take. There are many different topics, but I chose East Asian Interactions because I thought it would be interesting to learn more about my culture. Although this class is possibly becoming one my least favorite classes. I don’t really enjoy my professor’s way of teaching, so that sometime is a struggle. It is really interesting though!

AA 301: Arts Administration
T,Th 1-215
I’m taking this class as part of one my extra classes for my major. This classes deals mainly with how to manage a non profit organization. It is really interesting and will definitely help me later on if I decide to do PR for a non profit. This class is really creative and we do a lot of games that get us to think outside of the box.

STR 228: Promotional Writing
W 225-505
I only have this class once a week, which can be kind of intense sometimes. This class is also for my major and deals with writing for memos, releases, and a lot of knowing what to say in the proper way. I really like this class because I want to improve my writing, so I hope by the end of this class this will help with internships!

STR 251: Design and Production for STR
M, W 1-215
I really like this class! We learn how to use Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and a lot of other Adobe products! It’s a lot of fun, but today we are sketching and I’m not sure how great that will turn out for me. My professor is really nice too and very helpful!

It’s insane to think about how many credits I already have and everything I am learning, but I’m so excited to be continuing on in my major and getting deeper into topics!

What I’ve Been Listening To

So a couple of the bloggers do a Music Monday blog, but they typically focus on one specific artist and since I am the most unfocused person in America, I usually never am listening to the same artist that often! Instead, as usual, here are my top five songs that I can’t stop listening to.

#1. Heart Skips A Beat – Olly Murs
I don’t think this song is that new, but I just discovered and literally cannot stop listening to it. It has this really simple beat to, but I love his voice. On top of that he’s pretty attractive, and the lyrics are really easy to sing to. I love listening to this song when I’m doing cycling in my roommates cycling class at the HRC!

#2 Feel It All Around – Washed Out
My best friend, Trai, got me obsessed with this song a couple weeks ago. Basically if you want the full description on how I feel about this song, here goes nothing. I explained to Trai this song makes me feel like you are driving with the top down on a sunny day, hair is flowing in the window, with aviator glasses on, and just a simple head bob. Yeah I went really detailed with this song, and Trai agreed.

#3 Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore ft. Ray Dalton
This song gets me so hyped up! If you haven’t heard of Macklemore he’s getting really popular really fast. ESPN plays this song for their College Game Day segment and literally it got me pumped to yell for 4 hours. Ray Dalton’s voice is so smooth too that it just adds this totally different vibe to the song.

#4 Let Her Go – Passenger
I have no idea how long this song has been out. I like this song a lot because it’s so mellow and I really like the lyrics to it. The singers voice is really interesting too. It’s really good music to listen to when I’m studying or just hanging out in my room not trying to be crazy, which is very rare.

#5 Wild For the Night – A$AP Rocky ft. Skrillex
I can’t really post this video, because it’s not the most appropriate song, but the beat is sick and I love this song. It’s rap and dubstep/techno all mixed together which is awesome. Plus if anyone knows me I am usually playing rap music in my room anyway.

Creative PowerPoints Recieve Big Rewards.

It’s that time of the year when many college students and even high school students can only thing about one thing. Spring Break. Whether you are headed to Florida, Cali, maybe even Texas everyone is counting down the days until the sun is shining and everyone is super tan.

Typically I don’t go on Spring Break, I usually just stay at home and work, but this year an opportunity came up that I couldn’t help but ask my parents. Due to my lack of being able to ask my parents in a normal way I made a PowerPoint. You can ask my dad this PowerPoint was very formal even at the end saying thank you for your time and consideration.

Jamaica!

I didn’t really think the PowerPoint was going to work considering I was asking to go to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, but low and behold the Spring Break Gods looked down upon me and blessed me because my parents are letting me go! I get to go on a 5 day cruise to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands! I’m so excited.

Cruise!!

The moral of this story is that PowerPoint presentations can actually really work so maybe everyone should just ask in PowerPoint. My dad’s response to this: ” I hope you are spending this much time on your school work as you are on your PowerPoints.” No worries Dad!

I’m The Luckiest Girl

Typically when girls say this in movies I feel like it always has to do with them finding the love of their life. In this case the love my life is no man, but instead Hinkle Fieldhouse and most of all my school, Butler.

Yesterday was the most insane day of my life. There’s no other way I can think about explaining this besides doing a timeline for yesterday or January 19th.

6 AM: Woke up to get ready for College Game Day!
7 AM: Made it to Hinkle to help with College Game Day
8 AM: Doors opened for students
10 AM: College Game Day show starts for ESPNU
11 AM: College Game Day show starts for ESPN
8 PM: Make it back to Hinkle
9 PM: Game starts vs Gonzaga
1130 PM: Finally leave Hinkle after storming the court

Look Mom! I'm on ESPN!

Being able to experience everything front row yesterday is something I will always be grateful for. There’s no way in describing what all of us in Hinkle were able to experience yesterday. It’s something that still keeps each and every one of us in awe. I’ve watched the game twice more since then and still get nervous every single time in those last 4 seconds. As I always say though, it’s not a Butler game unless I have the feeling of a heart attack.

Yesterday was so much more than a basketball game. It made me realize so much more. I was able to meet Gonzaga’s Executive team of Kennel Club which is the equivalent of our Dawg Pound. They had nothing but nice things to say about the Hoosier hospitality and Butler way. It made me so proud to be part of Butler. It was amazing to see how hyped the crowd was that’s how every game should be.

I really am the luckiest girl. I love this school, and I can’t wait for so many others to experience what this school has provided for me, not just in basketball but in so much more. It just so happened that last night the nation was once again to see Butler do it again. This is no magic this is just the Butler way, and maybe a little Hinkle magic ;)

This Ones For You Billy.

Many of my friends know that I am blogger for Butler admissions. I don’t really mention the fact I’m a blogger unless I get bored of sharing “I’m half Japanese” as my interesting fact. When I started writing blogs about my roommates Kristina and Rori some became jealous and felt like they should have a blog about them as well. Billy is the only one that got jealous, but really.

Anytime I am at Sigma Nu, one of the fraternities on Butler campus, Billy always ask me when he will be getting a blog about him. Finally I have decided that there is no better time than now, since we just got new pledge classes and maybe this will help the newest pledge class of Sigma Nu to get to know Billy.

Meet Billy.

Billy is probably one of the nicest guys you will meet. He’s a little weird, but in a good way. My roommate Rori just mentioned he has a rabbit nose? Basically it means that he can flare his nose and she thinks it looks like a rabbit. Anyway I usually go to Billy for new bands because he loves Indie bands. Some times I get irritated because he’s probably one of the very few people who know more random bands than I do.

Billy just being Billy.

On top of Billy’s taste of music he is intrigued by some of the same things as me, such as…. THE BUTLER SQUIRRELS. Billy also has interesting taste in cars. He drives a van that looks kind of sketchy, so if you are around campus and happen to see a van with blacked out windows, no worries it’s no one trying to tempt you with candy into their van, it’s just Billy being Billy. Last but not least Billy is a mastermind. He has once convinced girls that a painting in his room was selling at Target stores nation wide… Don’t ask.

Either way I hope this blog fulfills what Billy wanted, and hopefully you can feel like you know Billy now. Did I mention Billy is in love with Ms. B?

Meet Our Newest Angels

As usual I failed. I planned on blogging through recruitment, but it is probably one of the most exhausting things. Recruitment for girls usually consists of all day talking from early in the morning to 6 at night and then for the girls in the house means setting up for the next day, moving around furniture, and trying to make sure everything is perfect.

Pi Phi's getting ready for Philanthropy day!

Yesterday was bid day and we were able to meet 54 new angels. I was so excited to meet so many girls. We also got three Asians and if anyone knows me this is very exciting. I’m very excited to share with the girls why Pi Phi means so much to me and what they will gain from not only these 4 years but for the rest of their life.

Our newest angels!

Everyone yesterday had to start on a wet start. We have at Butler, Rowdy Row, the police shut down the main road of campus and everyone that did recruitment runs out and finds their new homes. Yesterday it decided to pour during this time, but it made it to be so much fun! I can’t wait for what awaits all the new people that decided to go Greek!

8 Party Complete

Today was day one of formal recruitment. Each sorority had eight parties and each party had about 54 girls. If that tells you anything then you would know that I am completely exhausted.

Last night I went to bed at 1230, but I woke up at 430 to use the restroom and could not go back to sleep. Today I was only on 4 hours of sleep and talked to 21 different girls. It is probably the most insane thing I have done in my life. I have talked for 8 hours at a time at Forever 21, but that usually just entails me to say the same three things I always say. Today I actually had to hold conversation and make sure the girls felt comfortable. Not only that all the houses do something called stairs. It’s where the sorority comes down the stairs singing a song in unison and the stairs look almost like a waterfall with how the girls step down.

I have never been so excited to sleep in my life. I think I might be losing my mind, but no worries I’m just running on 4 hours of sleep. Tomorrow is our Philanthropy Day where we discuss what we do as a sorority for our philanthropy. The parties get smaller as the days go on, and by Sunday I will get to meet the new girls of Pi Beta Phi. Until then I will be sleeping and repeating the same thing I did today! Wish me luck!

Recruitment 2013

Yesterday I came back to Butler to start getting ready for recruitment this year! If you are not familiar with Greek Life, recruitment, or what some like to call rush, is when we find out who our new pledge class will be. It is a time for the freshmen to get to talk to the girls and really know what each house is like.

Although recruitment does not start until Wednesday all the sororities come back early and have sister week or a couple days to prepare for recruitment. These consist of all day practices of whatever you need to know before all the freshmen go through recruitment. It’s a time where your house gets extremely close, because even though the guys are back on campus you are pretty much on lock down and have to stay in the house for the most part.

I will try to blog as much as I can as this is my first time being on the other side of recruitment and not being a potential new member. This week is suppose to be crazy, but also really fun and exciting!

Each day we have theme days for our sister week. Today is pajama day! Here is what I’m wearing!

HELLO KITTY ONESIE :)

Thankful for 2012

I know this is a few days late, but I wanted to do a post about my year in 2012. 2012 brought me many great memories that I will never forget, and great opportunities.

First and foremost 2012 brought me Pi Beta Phi. A sisterhood I love to call my own now. I always thought that the sorority idea was cheesy and most of my friends never thought I would ever join a house, but after being in one I love that I have amazing girls to call not only my friends but as a my sisters. While I may not know everything about each one or be best friends with all of them, I know that they will always have my back and will always help through anything I go through.

2012 also brought me great opportunities in my education. Finally saying that I am a Strategic Communications major was something that I was so excited to say. Being able to take classes that were actually something about what I plan on doing in the real world was even better. I cannot wait to see what the future brings for me as I continue on in this major!

During this past year I had some issues with balancing school, social, work, and so on, but I realized that no matter what this year especially the support from my friends, family, and sisters was unbelievable. I think I am so used to having everyone rely on me that when I finally realized I needed help I never realized how much support I have from the people around me. So if anything I am thankful for 2012 because it allowed me to realize the best things in life. I cannot wait to see what 2013 brings for me.
