Our recommendation: Take the test early and often.
Butler does not have a preference as to which test you choose to take and actually matches ACT scores with the equivalent SAT score. While you don’t need to take both the ACT and SAT, we would recommend that you try each test at least once. Since the tests each have a different format or structure, you might find one that is directed more to your academic strengths or test taking style.
- The SAT (reasoning test) consists of three main sections: Critical Reading, Math and Writing.
- The ACT consists of 5 sections: English, Reading, Math, Science and Writing.
- The Writing section is required at Butler, so make sure that you opt in to taking that portion of the test when registering.
Regardless of which test you choose to take, we recommend that you take it at least twice, if not multiple times. Some schools, including Butler University, will take the best individual subsections of each time that you take the test to form a ‘Super Score’ or ‘Best Score.’ (See examples below)
‘Super Score or Best Score’
SAT
| Test Date | Composite Score | Critical Reading | Math | Writing |
| 6/4/11 | 1800 | 620 | 580 | 600 |
| 10/1/11 | 1800 | 600 | 620 | 580 |
| Butler University
‘Super Score’ |
1840 | 620 | 620 | 600 |
*You will notice that while composite score from both the June and October test are the same, the Butler University ‘Super Score’ is higher because we have taken the best subsection from each test.
ACT
| Test Date | Composite Score | English | Reading | Math | Science | Writing |
| 6/11/11 | 28 | 24 | 30 | 28 | 30 | 8 |
| 9/10/11 | 28 | 26 | 30 | 26 | 30 | 10 |
| 10/22/11 | 28 | 24 | 31 | 26 | 31 | 9 |
| Butler University
‘Super Score’ |
29 | 26 | 31 | 28 | 31 | 10 |
*Again, you will notice that while the composite scores for each ACT remained consistent, the overall Butler University ‘Super Score’ increased based on the use of the best individual sub sections from all the tests.
If you are planning to apply to Butler University by the Early Action deadline of November 1st, all ACT and SAT tests must be taken prior to that date. We do not need to have your scores at that time, but you need to let us know that we should be expecting those scores. On both the Butler application and the Common Application, you will find a section that asks you list the tests that you have taken and the test that you plan to take.
