What is New Student Registration?

As a newly admitted student to Butler University’s Class of 2017, we invite you to learn more about New Student Registration (NSR) before arriving on campus. You might be wondering what exactly happens during this event and why it’s so important. Basically, NSR is a one-day event for new students to register for classes, learn more about Butler University and their major, meet other newly admitted students, and tour campus. You might even get the opportunity to meet Blue II and Blue III (a.k.a. “Trip”). There are also helpful sessions for parents and guardians.

Below is an abbreviated schedule of the day:

9:00 a.m.—Check-in
10:00 a.m.—Official Welcome
11:00 a.m.—Students: College Meetings
11:00 a.m.—Parents: Making the Transition
12:00 p.m.—Lunch
1:00 p.m.—Students: Academic Advising Appointments
1:00 p.m.—Parents: College Meetings for Parents
1:45 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.—Information Sessions
1:45 p.m., 2:45 p.m., and 3:45 p.m.—Campus Tours
1:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.—Residence Hall Open House

Select Your New Student Registration Date

Have you recently been admitted to Butler, but still haven’t picked out which New Student Registration (NSR) date you would like to attend? Maybe you’ve already decided to call Butler your home this fall, but aren’t sure what you need to do next. We are here to help you!

With New Student Registration dates quickly filling up, we ask that you select your top three date preferences as soon as possible.

To register:

  • Log in to the student status page.
  • Click on New Student Registration Date Selection Form under “Forms.”
  • Complete the form and click “Submit.”

We realize that many students are hesitant to select a NSR date and want to give you a few reasons why it is a good idea to do so. New Student Registration allows you to:

  1. Schedule your classes
  2. Meet other newly admitted students
  3. Get to know your professors
  4. Mingle with current students and make friends before you even move to campus
  5. Meet your academic advisor
  6. Sit in on helpful sessions to prepare you for your college journey

Still deciding between schools? That is fine too. We highly recommend that you attend NSR because it is a great way to help narrow down your choices. As long as you make your final decision by May 1, your $300 enrollment fee is completely refundable. Please do not hesitate to contact your admission counselor or email admission@butler.edu with any question you make have. We will be more than happy to assist you.

Why It’s Important to Deposit Early

If you’ve recently been admitted to Butler University, we would like to extend a very special “Welcome and Congratulations” to you! Students who applied and were admitted for the Early Action deadline have the opportunity to submit their deposit by February 1 and receive some major perks. These priority items include:

  • Being among the first to register for classes early
  • Getting first choice of housing and roommate preferences
  • Joining a Living-Learning Center

If you’re still deciding between a few schools, we encourage you to submit your deposit because it can be extremely beneficial in making your final choice. Since the deposit is refundable, it allows you to “try Butler on.” Attending New Student Registration is a great way to get an insider’s look at Butler University, meet incoming and current students, schedule classes, and become acquainted with the faculty and staff; ultimately allowing you experience the social and academic aspects of campus. Visiting the University will also give you a chance to see all that downtown Indianapolis has to offer. From rock concerts to symphony hall, art galleries to museums, and every kind of restaurant, you’ll never be bored. This can help you determine if you’re meant to be in a big city or rural setting. In other words, you can see if Butler University is the right place for you.

We realize that making your final college selection is one of the biggest decisions you will ever face. Please know that your admission counselor and the entire Office of Admission staff are more than happy to answer any questions you have.

If you we are one of your top choices and you know you’re ready to deposit, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to your student status page and view your admission decision.
  2. If you haven’t done so already, click “Reply to Offer of Admission” under the “Forms” section. Complete the form and click “Submit.”
  3. This will take you back to your main status page. Click “Submit Payment for $300.00.” Complete the form and click “Submit.”
  4. Confirm your major on the main status page. If this has changed, contact the Office of Admission.
  5. Next, click “New Student Registration Date Selection” under the “Forms” section on your main status page. Complete the form and click “Submit.”
  6. The Office of Admission will email you additional information with your date confirmation.

Please note that it is necessary to submit your enrollment deposit before registering for classes.

I’m Admitted! What Next?

First of all, congratulations on your acceptance to Butler University! We are very excited to welcome you to the Class of 2017. Now that you’ve been admitted, you’re probably starting to wonder what you should be doing next. Just know that we’re here to help! We’ve come up with a short list to get you started:

  1. Attend an admitted student event. We offer a variety of events including academic days, basketball games, regional receptions, and more. Whatever you choose, we have the perfect visit for you. You can register for these events via the emails we send you or by logging onto your student status page.
  2. Submit your deposit. By submitting your deposit, you guarantee your spot in the freshmen class. Deposits are fully refundable until May 1. Visit our admitted student page for more information and directions on submitting your deposit.
  3. Visit campus. If you’ve never been to Butler before, you’re really missing out. We strongly encourage admitted students who haven’t been to campus to visit this spring. We offer individual visits and True Blue days to help you make an informed decision. Once you get to campus, you’ll fall in love!
  4. Select an Early New Student Registration date. Once you’ve submitted your deposit, you can select which Early New Student Registration date you would like to attend. Registering early allows you to meet with an academic advisor to discuss course options and schedule, meet classmates in a small group setting and get your college photo ID.
  5. Start thinking about housing options. Your housing information and contract will be sent once your enrollment deposit has been received. Residence hall choices: First-year men live in Ross Hall; first-year women may select either Ross Hall (co-ed) or Schwitzer Hall (all women). Transfer and international students have additional options. Roommate matches are made based on personal preferences students select on the housing contract (including things like, “Are you an early riser or a night owl?” “Do you study to music or in complete silence?”) Housing and roommate assignments will be mailed in July.
  6. Send in your final transcript. Arrange to have all of your final academic transcripts sent to the Office of Admission at the end of the school year with your date of graduation posted. If you are taking AP exams, have your scores sent to Butler University.

So, You’ve Applied…Now What?

It’s been a busy fall semester. You’ve been scrambling around desperately trying to keep up with your senior year classes and other in-and-out-of-school activities. You’ve been awake at all hours trying to complete applications and stay ahead of deadlines. And oh yeah, you’ve been thinking (and worrying) quite a bit too about college. You’re probably worn out from looking at college brochures, visiting websites, comparing college rankings, traveling around going on college visits, talking to your high school counselor and perhaps even taking one too many of those virtual tours.

Despite all of this you’ve somehow managed to successfully submit several (or perhaps more than several) college applications. Relief sets in now that you’ve managed to complete this part of the process. Time to kick back and relax!  Not quite – the most difficult part is now upon you…WAITING. You thought the hardest part would be deciding where to apply and writing those dreaded college essays. Yet, you now find yourself waiting, almost paralyzed not knowing what your future holds and wondering what some phantom college admission officer will think of your application.

Does this sound familiar? I’m guessing so. Well take comfort in knowing that pretty much every college-bound high school senior is experiencing similar stresses. You are not alone! But now the question is – so what now?

Here on the college admission side of things, we are very busy collecting all the information that you just submitted to us and communicating with you – the applicant. Butler University admission counselors are diligently beginning the process of reviewing every single page of every single application. In a matter of about six weeks we will have read through about 6,000-7,000 applications. That’s a lot of reading! We take this process very seriously and believe it or not, get jazzed to read your application. It is our passion to help you achieve your dreams of going to college and we love reading your stories and hearing about your high school achievements.

You might be asking yourself, “What can I do during this time period, besides nervously waiting on a decision?” Well for starters, stay in contact with us! We always love hearing from you and knowing that you’re still out there. Often times it can be forgotten that we are here to help you and make the entire process easier and less stressful – so take advantage of connecting with us on a regular basis. We try and make this as easy as possible by being available on many different platforms: e-mail; all the numerous social media sites; and of course, our website. Let us know how we can help and take advantage of this down-time to also connect with current Butler students and professors as well as other potential future Butler students. Who knows? You might even find your future roommate while connecting with us on our Facebook page.

Finally, make sure that you’re sending us any new or updated information that we can add to your application file. The more we know about you, the better! Just because our admission deadline has passed doesn’t mean that the information exchange stops. We realize the rapid pace at which things change and that things happen between the time you applied and the time of our decision.

Bottom line: don’t be shy! Invest in the process, stay engaged and don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions. We think you’ll find that all that waiting was definitely worth it. Continue to visit our blog as we will be posting a “What Happens to Your Application” video in the next week or two.

Buying Your Books

Every year we get questions from eager incoming freshmen about how and when they should go about purchasing books for the fall term. This step-by-step guide will help you navigate the process. Before we begin, just remember that not every instructor will have their books posted yet. You might have to wait until August to find out what book(s) you will need for your class(es). And, let’s be honesty, you probably aren’t going to read them this summer even if you do get them before August.

1. Log into My.Butler.

 

2. Click on “Self Service” then “Student Center”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Click “Enroll”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

4. Click on “My Class Schedule”. This will bring up a list of your classes with a link to “Buy my books” at the bottom.

 

5. Once you view the books that are needed for each class you can purchase them from the Butler Bookstore. You can also buy or rent discounted books from Amazon, Chegg, eCampus.com and Half.com. If you know of a good place to purchase or rent textbooks from, please leave your comment below.

What You Need to Know About Academic Advising

We’re getting questions from many seniors regarding New Student Registration and the academic advising process. During the academic advising appointment, you will discuss your placement exam results, classes important to your major, the Core Curriculum, and potential electives. Together, you will craft a first semester class schedule that balances requirements with general courses of interest.

Upon arrival, students will receive a special version of Butler’s Fall 2012 Schedule of Classes listing all course options appropriate for first year students. This booklet will include course descriptions and meeting times for Core Curriculum and entry level classes for all majors. Please bring this booklet to your college meeting and academic advising appointment as it will be helpful when planning your schedule.

It is not necessary to have a complete course schedule prepared prior to arrival. Many variables go into the enrollment process, including course availability and placement exam results that impact the selection of courses. Welcome Week: Study Abroad Style

As I begin thinking about Welcome Week commencing on the Butler University campus, I can’t help but think back to the unique Welcome Week experience I encountered while abroad in Germany at Zeppelin University. Welcome Week at any university is the most exciting and exhilarating time. Its a clean slate full of new faces, new opportunities, and tons of potential. But let me just say that I was not quite prepared for the Welcome Week that I was about to experience once I got settled into a week of living in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Welcome Week in Germany

After a few minor activities, students were arranged and split into groups of boys and girls, and all of us were placed into a large empty room in a huge circle. We all soon began to realize that this activity is what we in America like to call “speed dating.” The boys rotated around the circle in order to talk to and get to know each one of us a little better. We had three minutes with each person to talk about the topic that was given to us before each round. Hobbies, family, travel, our future goals…anything was up for discussion! At first everyone was a little worried and nervous, but what felt like a speed dating session was actually a very effective way to put names with the faces you had seen all week during other activities. Next up after being introduced to everyone, we were split into teams of ten and given a series of challenges to complete. Among them were creating a cheer about the University and performing it for everyone, watching a slide show of professors pictures and then putting names with these new faces, and last but not least: running into the freezing cold Bodensee Lake smack dab in the middle of January. Each team got more points depending on how far they ventured into the bitterly cold water. Me, being the wimp that I am, didn’t contribute too much to the team score since I only stuck my feet in.

International Welcome Week

Looking back, even though Butler and Zeppelin varied drastically in the types of activities they required students to participate in during Welcome Week, the goal of both universities was ultimately the same. The first few weeks at a new place with new people can be exciting but also scary at the same time. Bonding activities can really help you form close relationships with the people that may soon become your new found best friends. Even though it might make you uncomfortable or feel unsure of yourself, always open yourself up to new experiences because you never know just where they may take you! Thanks for reading!
