What Can I Do If I’m Not Admitted?

Transfer to ButlerUnfortunately, not everyone receives the admission decision they were hoping for when they started this process. If Butler is the school you want to attend, this initial admission decision isn’t the your last opportunity to apply. If you were not offered admission as a freshman and would like to transfer to Butler after attending another college or university, we recommend that you spend at least one year with that institution before submitting a new application for admission. By the numbers, some programs at Butler have a slightly lower freshman acceptance rate because of the limited number of spots available for incoming students, specifically pre-pharmacy and pre-physician assistant.

  • For pre-pharmacy, it is still recommended that transfer applicants complete at least one year of coursework at another institution before applying again to the program. Students can apply to the pre-pharmacy phase of the program as a transfer student if their college GPA is 3.0 or higher. Additionally, if a student has successfully completed all required pre-requisite courses and also has taken the PCAT, he/she can then apply directly to the 4-year professional phase of the pharmacy program.
  • To apply for the 3-year professional phase of the physician assistant program, a student must have completed or will complete a Bachelor’s degree prior to the fall semester he/she intends to enroll. This Bachelor’s degree must include the successful completion all of the required physician assistant pre-requisite courses.

I’m Admitted! What Next?

First of all, congratulations on your acceptance to Butler University! We are very excited to welcome you to the Class of 2017. Now that you’ve been admitted, you’re probably starting to wonder what you should be doing next. Just know that we’re here to help! We’ve come up with a short list to get you started:

  1. Attend an admitted student event. We offer a variety of events including academic days, basketball games, regional receptions, and more. Whatever you choose, we have the perfect visit for you. You can register for these events via the emails we send you or by logging onto your student status page.
  2. Submit your deposit. By submitting your deposit, you guarantee your spot in the freshmen class. Deposits are fully refundable until May 1. Visit our admitted student page for more information and directions on submitting your deposit.
  3. Visit campus. If you’ve never been to Butler before, you’re really missing out. We strongly encourage admitted students who haven’t been to campus to visit this spring. We offer individual visits and True Blue days to help you make an informed decision. Once you get to campus, you’ll fall in love!
  4. Select an Early New Student Registration date. Once you’ve submitted your deposit, you can select which Early New Student Registration date you would like to attend. Registering early allows you to meet with an academic advisor to discuss course options and schedule, meet classmates in a small group setting and get your college photo ID.
  5. Start thinking about housing options. Your housing information and contract will be sent once your enrollment deposit has been received. Residence hall choices: First-year men live in Ross Hall; first-year women may select either Ross Hall (co-ed) or Schwitzer Hall (all women). Transfer and international students have additional options. Roommate matches are made based on personal preferences students select on the housing contract (including things like, “Are you an early riser or a night owl?” “Do you study to music or in complete silence?”) Housing and roommate assignments will be mailed in July.
  6. Send in your final transcript. Arrange to have all of your final academic transcripts sent to the Office of Admission at the end of the school year with your date of graduation posted. If you are taking AP exams, have your scores sent to Butler University.

So, You’ve Applied…Now What?

It’s been a busy fall semester. You’ve been scrambling around desperately trying to keep up with your senior year classes and other in-and-out-of-school activities. You’ve been awake at all hours trying to complete applications and stay ahead of deadlines. And oh yeah, you’ve been thinking (and worrying) quite a bit too about college. You’re probably worn out from looking at college brochures, visiting websites, comparing college rankings, traveling around going on college visits, talking to your high school counselor and perhaps even taking one too many of those virtual tours.

Despite all of this you’ve somehow managed to successfully submit several (or perhaps more than several) college applications. Relief sets in now that you’ve managed to complete this part of the process. Time to kick back and relax!  Not quite – the most difficult part is now upon you…WAITING. You thought the hardest part would be deciding where to apply and writing those dreaded college essays. Yet, you now find yourself waiting, almost paralyzed not knowing what your future holds and wondering what some phantom college admission officer will think of your application.

Does this sound familiar? I’m guessing so. Well take comfort in knowing that pretty much every college-bound high school senior is experiencing similar stresses. You are not alone! But now the question is – so what now?

Here on the college admission side of things, we are very busy collecting all the information that you just submitted to us and communicating with you – the applicant. Butler University admission counselors are diligently beginning the process of reviewing every single page of every single application. In a matter of about six weeks we will have read through about 6,000-7,000 applications. That’s a lot of reading! We take this process very seriously and believe it or not, get jazzed to read your application. It is our passion to help you achieve your dreams of going to college and we love reading your stories and hearing about your high school achievements.

You might be asking yourself, “What can I do during this time period, besides nervously waiting on a decision?” Well for starters, stay in contact with us! We always love hearing from you and knowing that you’re still out there. Often times it can be forgotten that we are here to help you and make the entire process easier and less stressful – so take advantage of connecting with us on a regular basis. We try and make this as easy as possible by being available on many different platforms: e-mail; all the numerous social media sites; and of course, our website. Let us know how we can help and take advantage of this down-time to also connect with current Butler students and professors as well as other potential future Butler students. Who knows? You might even find your future roommate while connecting with us on our Facebook page.

Finally, make sure that you’re sending us any new or updated information that we can add to your application file. The more we know about you, the better! Just because our admission deadline has passed doesn’t mean that the information exchange stops. We realize the rapid pace at which things change and that things happen between the time you applied and the time of our decision.

Bottom line: don’t be shy! Invest in the process, stay engaged and don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions. We think you’ll find that all that waiting was definitely worth it. Continue to visit our blog as we will be posting a “What Happens to Your Application” video in the next week or two.

Complete Your Application by November 1

With the application deadline looming, it’s important to make sure that you are on top of submitting your supplemental materials. There are a few key facts that are important for you to know:

  • EssayThe Early Action deadline is November 1. If you haven’t applied yet, do so at www.butler.edu/apply.
  • You need to have the following completed/submitted by November 1:
    1. High school transcripts
    2. Test scores (ACT or SAT with writing)
    3. Secondary School Report completed by your high school counselor
    4. Personal statement, essay (using one of the prompts on the application) or graded paper from one of your classes. Please pick one of the three, we do not have a preference of which you submit.
    5. Resume of activities, which includes extracurricular activities and leadership experience. This is not required.
    6. Letters of recommendation. These are not required.

If you do apply by November 1, you will be eligible for:

  • Full scholarship consideration
  • A decision mailed by December 15
  • First choice of housing and the Freshmen Living Learning Center
  • Early registration for classes

College GO! Week

Every fall, Learn More Indiana supports College GO! Week in schools and communities across the state of Indiana. The campaign is kicking off this coming Monday, September 24 and will end on Friday, September 28 with activities continuing all fall semester. College GO! Week includes activities for elementary, middle and high school students as well as current college students and adults who are returning to school.

The goal of College GO! Week is simple: help Hoosiers of all ages PLAN for college completion and career success.

With College GO! Week, you’ll find practical tips for every age. However, we are going to focus on juniors and seniors for this particular post.

Seniors:
Butler University, along with 50+ Indiana schools, participates in College GO Week! each year. What does that mean for you? It means that you can apply for free to Butler University all next week! In fact, you can apply for free at any time using our online application. Apply online at www.butler.edu/apply. Please visit www.in.gov/collegegoweek to see which schools offer an application waiver the week of September 24 – 28.

Juniors:
As a high school junior, you might be thinking, “I have plenty of time to think about college. Why would I start now?” The reason you should start early is to be as prepared as possible before heading into your senior year. We recommend that you start scheduling campus visits as a junior to help you narrow down your selection. We’d love to see you on Butler’s campus this fall or spring. College GO! Week runs from September 24 – September 28, but you can register at any time for our events on www.butler.edu/visit.

What These Butler Freshmen Wished They Would Have Known During the Application Process

Between the college application process (which is different for every college or university you apply to) and the day you move into your dorm, people will tell you a lot of things about what college is really like. Every school is unique and is experienced differently by each individual. That’s why some of our current freshmen wanted to share a few application tips and what they wished they would have known about the application process with you:

  • Ask a teacher to read over your essays, in my experience they were more then willing to do this and extremely helpful! – Abby
  • Maintain your grades during senior year. It is not a time to slack off. I know of a few people who decided to coast during their senior year and weren’t able to get into the college of their choice. -Justin
  • Get your applications done early and keep track of important dates! This made senior year so much better because I had free time and everyone else was worrying about essays and applications. -Brandon
  • Don’t wait until April to start looking for outside scholarships. There is so much money to be had out there, and you can’t wait for it to come to you.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Parents and Teachers can be very helpful, especially when it comes essay time. -Laura
  • Visit every campus you might be interested in attending. After all, you’ll be there for four years so you want to make sure that you like it! -Katie

Buying Your Books

Every year we get questions from eager incoming freshmen about how and when they should go about purchasing books for the fall term. This step-by-step guide will help you navigate the process. Before we begin, just remember that not every instructor will have their books posted yet. You might have to wait until August to find out what book(s) you will need for your class(es). And, let’s be honesty, you probably aren’t going to read them this summer even if you do get them before August.

1. Log into My.Butler.

 

2. Click on “Self Service” then “Student Center”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Click “Enroll”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

4. Click on “My Class Schedule”. This will bring up a list of your classes with a link to “Buy my books” at the bottom.

 

5. Once you view the books that are needed for each class you can purchase them from the Butler Bookstore. You can also buy or rent discounted books from Amazon, Chegg, eCampus.com and Half.com. If you know of a good place to purchase or rent textbooks from, please leave your comment below.

Visit Campus This Summer at Butler 101

This is the time of year when high school juniors (and even sophomores) need to start thinking about college visits. We encourage students to visit colleges and universities early on in their search process. By doing so, you can get a better understanding of what you are looking for in a higher education institution. Furthermore, this can help you save time. We often see that students start visiting schools after they’ve already applied. Visiting colleges and universities before you apply can help you narrow down your choices. It might even help you eliminate a few, ultimately, saving you time applying to schools you wouldn’t see yourself at.

We have Butler 101 events that rising juniors and seniors can attend this summer. Butler 101 is a great way to learn more about all that Butler University has to offer. At Butler 101, you will get to experience an admission and financial aid presentation, student-led campus tour and cookout with current students, faculty and admission counselors. Register now for this unique opportunity to visit Butler.

Are You Ready for (Early) New Student Registration?

Early New Student Registration is just around the corner. Are you starting to prepare? If you’ve selected the date in which you want to attend a registration, great! If not, here is a complete list of dates:

There are a few important items you will want to be sure to take care of before arriving on campus for New Student Registration. First, you will want to take your placement exams. Before you begin taking those exams, please visit our Placement Exam FAQ’s page. Next, you’ll want to actually take the placement exams. All of the placement exam info can be found on our New Student Registration website. This specific page will give you information on what placement exams you need to take, when you need to take them by and how to actually take each test.

After completing your placement exams, you’ll want to start preparing for your academic advising session. What is an academic advising appointment? It’s an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a faculty member in the major you have declared. During the academic advising appointment, you will discuss your placement exam results, classes important to your major, the Core Curriculum, and potential electives. Together, you will craft a first semester class schedule that balances requirements with general courses of interest.
