Visit Butler This Summer

Summer is a great time for rising juniors and seniors to start visiting colleges. Trying to squeeze in campus visits during the school year can be difficult with everything else that is already on your plate. That is why we invite you to join us for Butler 101 in June, July, or August.

Butler 101 is a great way to learn more about all that Butler University has to offer. During this event, you will get to experience an admission and financial aid presentation, student-led campus tour, and cookout with current students and faculty. Faculty and staff from every department will be on hand to discuss all things Butler and answer your questions. We hope that you stop by Butler’s beautiful campus this summer to get a glimpse of what college life is like at BU.

What is New Student Registration?

As a newly admitted student to Butler University’s Class of 2017, we invite you to learn more about New Student Registration (NSR) before arriving on campus. You might be wondering what exactly happens during this event and why it’s so important. Basically, NSR is a one-day event for new students to register for classes, learn more about Butler University and their major, meet other newly admitted students, and tour campus. You might even get the opportunity to meet Blue II and Blue III (a.k.a. “Trip”). There are also helpful sessions for parents and guardians.

Below is an abbreviated schedule of the day:

Select Your New Student Registration Date

Have you recently been admitted to Butler, but still haven’t picked out which New Student Registration (NSR) date you would like to attend? Maybe you’ve already decided to call Butler your home this fall, but aren’t sure what you need to do next. We are here to help you!

With New Student Registration dates quickly filling up, we ask that you select your top three date preferences as soon as possible.

To register:

  • Log in to the student status page.
  • Click on New Student Registration Date Selection Form under “Forms.”
  • Complete the form and click “Submit.”

We realize that many students are hesitant to select a NSR date and want to give you a few reasons why it is a good idea to do so. New Student Registration allows you to:

  1. Schedule your classes
  2. Meet other newly admitted students
  3. Get to know your professors
  4. Mingle with current students and make friends before you even move to campus
  5. Meet your academic advisor
  6. Sit in on helpful sessions to prepare you for your college journey

Still deciding between schools? That is fine too. We highly recommend that you attend NSR because it is a great way to help narrow down your choices. As long as you make your final decision by May 1, your $300 enrollment fee is completely refundable. Please do not hesitate to contact your admission counselor or email admission@butler.edu with any question you make have. We will be more than happy to assist you.

Top 10 Reasons to Visit Butler University

An integral part of deciding which college you want to attend is to see if it is a good fit. Going on a college visit can help you determine if a school is the right place for you. We understand that visiting colleges may not be possible for everyone, but it can be extremely helpful when making your final selection. With Explore Butler visits happening every Monday through Saturday and Junior Preview Days just around the corner, we’ve complied a list of the “Top 10 Reasons to Visit Butler University”:

  1. You get to actually see our beautiful campus firsthand. Pictures and videos are cool, but there’s nothing quite like experiencing it for yourself.
  2. Butler is home to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The fieldhouse has reigned as one of the nation’s great sports arenas for more than six decades. This classic facility was constructed in 1928 and was the nation’s largest basketball arena at that time. The legendary building has stood the test of time, maintaining the splendor, character, and atmosphere that made it one of the nation’s most famous basketball arenas nearly a century ago. Hinkle Fieldhouse is also home to the Milan Miracle, the memorable 1954 victory of tiny Milan High School over the much larger Muncie Central. The film Hoosiers, loosely based on that event, used Hinkle Fieldhouse when filming the climactic game of the popular movie.
  3. Indianapolis is just minutes from downtown Indianapolis, the 12th largest city in the nation. The Colts and Pacers play just a few miles from campus. Downtown Indy also boasts rock concerts, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Broadway shows, art galleries, shopping, museums, and every kind of restaurant imaginable!
  4. Current students will guide you around campus. Chances are you will get to know your tour guide pretty well, which gives you the opportunity to build a network of friends almost instantly!
  5. Butler is home to one of the largest public observatories in the world. Holcomb Observatory houses a 38-inch Cassegrain reflectors, which makes it the largest observatory in Indiana.
  6. Butler University houses a Starbucks in the student union. Need we say more?
  7. You can experience Broad Ripple Village. This popular, eclectic section of the city is located just five minutes from campus and features boutiques, cafés, galleries, dozens of restaurants, and an exciting nightlife.
  8. We have the cutest mascots ever. Butler University has a long tradition of live mascots. Blue II and Blue III, often referred to as “Trip”, currently reign over the school. Visit the Doggie Bag to learn more about these adorable pooches.
  9. The Butler men’s basketball team is currently ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 and No. 11 in the AP Poll. While there is more to Butler University than basketball (for example: 60+ majors, 140+ student clubs and activities, etc.), it’s still exciting to be a part of such a successful season.
  10. The Health and Recreation Complex has a lazy river. While you may not be able to try it out during your visit, you can enjoy all the perks of this amazing facility when you become a Butler student.

The Junior Year Plan for Success Begins Now

As a junior, you might feel like it’s time to start thinking about the college search process. If you’re in that mindset, congratulations, you’re already a step ahead! If you’re not, we can certainly help you get there. While we have a complete Plan for Success on the parent section of our website, below is a brief list to help get you started:

  • Attend college fairs at your high school or in your community. View a complete list on www.butler.edu/visit. Don’t see your area or high school listed? Keep checking back for updates or contact your admission counselor.
  • Talk to your guidance counselor about taking the SAT or ACT. You can also take the PSAT for an opportunity to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
  • Now is a good time to take your extracurricular involvement to the next level. It’s important to have a strong résumé when applying to college.
  • Speaking of résumés, this is a great time to begin working on yours. Start putting together a list of your accomplishments and involvements and update it as needed. While Butler does not require a résumé, we strongly recommend that you have one.
  • Register with NCAA Clearinghouse if you plan to play Division I college athletics. You can find more information on their website at www.ncaa.org.
  • Plan your senior year. It’s important to discuss your course schedule with your guidance counselor to ensure you meet the graduation requirements. We also suggest that you begin to think about Butler University’s admission requirements when filling out your senior schedule.

What Can I Do If I’m Not Admitted?

Transfer to ButlerUnfortunately, not everyone receives the admission decision they were hoping for when they started this process. If Butler is the school you want to attend, this initial admission decision isn’t the your last opportunity to apply. If you were not offered admission as a freshman and would like to transfer to Butler after attending another college or university, we recommend that you spend at least one year with that institution before submitting a new application for admission. By the numbers, some programs at Butler have a slightly lower freshman acceptance rate because of the limited number of spots available for incoming students, specifically pre-pharmacy and pre-physician assistant.

  • For pre-pharmacy, it is still recommended that transfer applicants complete at least one year of coursework at another institution before applying again to the program. Students can apply to the pre-pharmacy phase of the program as a transfer student if their college GPA is 3.0 or higher. Additionally, if a student has successfully completed all required pre-requisite courses and also has taken the PCAT, he/she can then apply directly to the 4-year professional phase of the pharmacy program.
  • To apply for the 3-year professional phase of the physician assistant program, a student must have completed or will complete a Bachelor’s degree prior to the fall semester he/she intends to enroll. This Bachelor’s degree must include the successful completion all of the required physician assistant pre-requisite courses.

Financial Aid Terminology Decoded

A few weeks back, we decoded admission specific language for you. Now it’s time to share the ins-and-outs of Financial Aid terminology. Before we jump into the financial aid process in the next few weeks, let’s define a few terms you might need to familiarize yourself with:

  • Aid: Need-based aid refers to federal, state and university grants, federal student loans, and federal student work-study. For consideration of need-based aid, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We recommend each year that you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid online.
  • Expected Family Contribution (EFC): This is calculated by the federal methodology using information you provided on the FAFSA.
  • Grants: Grants are a form of financial aid, based on need, which you do not have to repay.
  • Merit & Talent Awards (also known as scholarships): Awards based on academic achievement or performance ability (scholarships). Those you do not have to pay back.
  • Loans: Students and parents who wish to borrow from any of the loan programs (ex: Federal Direct PLUS Loan or Private Loans) must determine their borrowing needs for the entire academic year before beginning the application process.
  • Verification: Verification is a process used to verify certain information on the FAFSA to ensure its accuracy. Some students are selected for verification by the U.S. Department of Education and others are selected by the school. Not sure what to do if you’ve been selected for verification? Visit the eCampusTours website for more information. The Office of Financial Aid will also send you more information if you are selected for this process.

Now let’s cover some important dates:

  1. Gather the previous calendar year’s W2s and federal tax returns, and identification documents (social security cards, drivers licenses) for both the student and the parents.
  2. File the FAFSA (school code 001788) between January 1 and March 1.
  3. The Office of Financial Aid will use your EFC to determine how much aid you’ll receive.
  4. The Financial Aid Notification (FAN) will be mailed to you after March 15. This is a complete overview of the financial aid offered to students eligible to receive financial aid based on merit or need. The FAN also includes an average cost of attendance, which is used to determine financial aid eligibility. You’ll receive a financial aid award letter that tells you the amount of aid you’ll receive for the school year and in what form: loan, grant or campus-based program.
  5. Your offer of financial aid will be available to you online at my.butler.edu (Self-Service – Student Center – Finances – Review/Accept/Decline Financial Aid) after you’ve received your award letter. You can accept or decline each award, select a lender (if necessary) and report any outside scholarships.
  6. To help you consider your options, you can also fill out the Family Responsibility Worksheet (PDF) will guide you in evaluating the different financing options available and developing a plan for your investment in a Butler education.

I’m Admitted! What Next?

First of all, congratulations on your acceptance to Butler University! We are very excited to welcome you to the Class of 2017. Now that you’ve been admitted, you’re probably starting to wonder what you should be doing next. Just know that we’re here to help! We’ve come up with a short list to get you started:

  1. Attend an admitted student event. We offer a variety of events including academic days, basketball games, regional receptions, and more. Whatever you choose, we have the perfect visit for you. You can register for these events via the emails we send you or by logging onto your student status page.
  2. Submit your deposit. By submitting your deposit, you guarantee your spot in the freshmen class. Deposits are fully refundable until May 1. Visit our admitted student page for more information and directions on submitting your deposit.
  3. Visit campus. If you’ve never been to Butler before, you’re really missing out. We strongly encourage admitted students who haven’t been to campus to visit this spring. We offer individual visits and True Blue days to help you make an informed decision. Once you get to campus, you’ll fall in love!
  4. Select an Early New Student Registration date. Once you’ve submitted your deposit, you can select which Early New Student Registration date you would like to attend. Registering early allows you to meet with an academic advisor to discuss course options and schedule, meet classmates in a small group setting and get your college photo ID.
  5. Start thinking about housing options. Your housing information and contract will be sent once your enrollment deposit has been received. Residence hall choices: First-year men live in Ross Hall; first-year women may select either Ross Hall (co-ed) or Schwitzer Hall (all women). Transfer and international students have additional options. Roommate matches are made based on personal preferences students select on the housing contract (including things like, “Are you an early riser or a night owl?” “Do you study to music or in complete silence?”) Housing and roommate assignments will be mailed in July.
  6. Send in your final transcript. Arrange to have all of your final academic transcripts sent to the Office of Admission at the end of the school year with your date of graduation posted. If you are taking AP exams, have your scores sent to Butler University.

Start Thinking About Financial Aid

We realize that it isn’t December 15 yet and you have not received your admission decision. However, it’s never too early to start thinking about financial aid. We’ve created a helpful checklist for you to get a head start on financial aid:

  1. Did you know that you are eligible for academic scholarships just for applying to Butler University? Award amounts range from $6,000 to $16,000 and vary each academic year based on the quality of the applicant pool. You will receive your scholarship amount approximately two weeks following your admission decision.
  2. File your Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1. (Estimate the required tax information if your tax forms are still incomplete.) You must complete the FAFSA by March 1. Keep a photocopy for your records.
  3. If you haven’t already, start researching outside scholarship opportunities. Search for outside scholarships on Zinch.com, Cappex.com, scholarships.com, fastweb.com and more!
  4. On March 15, we send out the Financial Aid Notification package. This includes the types and amounts of financial aid for which you qualify, the cost of attendance and your expected family contribution.
  5. If your family’s financial circumstances have changed significantly since you submitted the FAFSA, contact financial aid immediately.
  6. If your financial aid application is selected for verification, the school will require you to submit additional documentation, such as signed copies of your W-2 statement, tax returns and 1099 forms. The federal government selects 30% of the FAFSAs for verification.
  7. Finally, decide which school you want to attend and accept the offer (hopefully ours). We’ll show you how to do this when the time comes!
