It’s hard to believe that it’s already that time of year again. We’re not just talking about the time of year when you can order pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks or enjoy a Friday night football game with your “besties”, but fall is also when you can start filling out your college applications. At Butler, our Early Action 1 deadline is November 1.

I, along with most of the other admission counselors, would encourage you to get your application in sooner rather than later. We accept both our Butler University Freshman Application and the Common Application. Remember, it is free to apply online to Butler University! Getting your application done early will not only allow you to enjoy more of your senior year, but it will give you maximum consideration for all of our merit-based scholarships. Please know that we have no preference as to what application you use to apply to Butler.

The most important part of our application review is your academic preparation and performance. When reviewing your application, we look at the number of academic core courses (English, math, social science, science, and foreign language) you’ve taken through four years of high school, the level of those academic courses (AP, IB, honors, accelerated, etc.), and the grades you receive in these courses. Your senior year schedule is critical since it’s your last preparatory year before college, so make sure you have the best schedule possible. In other words, if you have three study halls or multiple office helper periods, you might want to think about substituting one of those for a math or science course. Remember, anything you can do to make yourself stand out from the application pool is a plus.

We also require a writing sample along with the application. At Butler, you can submit either an original essay based on one of the question prompts on the application, or submit a graded paper you’ve completed for a class (with your teacher’s comments and grade). In either case, you’ll want to submit a paper that allows us to hear from you in your own words. It’s the only time we get to hear from you in your own words during the application review, so make sure you are answering the “why” part of the question (you know, why this specific story is important to you), not just telling a story about “what” happened. Also, remember to proof your writing sample carefully. It can be extremely helpful to have a parent, guardian, teacher or counselor review your submission. Make sure that if you are submitting the same writing sample to more than one institution, you use “Search and Replace” to change the name of the first institution to the name of the next. And finally, remember that spell check only finds words that are truly misspelled, not misused…typing “candy stripper” as one of your volunteering accomplishments instead of “candy striper” puts a whole new spin on what you are trying to convey.

Your activities resume is important as it allows us to see how you balance what you do in the classroom with what you do in your free time. We are looking to see what’s important to you and what you might bring to the Butler campus. This activities resume can show us your leadership, your passion, your experience, or all of these. We don’t need to know every single thing you’ve done since you were 4 years old, but if you have been doing something for a long time (playing soccer since you could walk, playing piano since second grade, writing for a community blog or publication since seventh grade, etc.), let us know that.

While test scores (ACT or SAT) are only one piece of a much larger admission review, it is important that you have taken either the ACT with writing or the SAT (which includes writing automatically).  We do not have a preference for either ACT with writing or SAT, but your application will not be complete until you have submitted an ACT or SAT score.  If you have taken either test more than once, we will take the highest individual subscores on each section of the test and create a new composite/combined score. While test scores are a required part of the application process, they are typically neither the sole reason to admit nor deny a student’s application for admission.

Are You Ready for (Early) New Student Registration?

Early New Student Registration is just around the corner. Are you starting to prepare? If you’ve selected the date in which you want to attend a registration, great! If not, here is a complete list of dates:

There are a few important items you will want to be sure to take care of before arriving on campus for New Student Registration. First, you will want to take your placement exams. Before you begin taking those exams, please visit our Placement Exam FAQ’s page. Next, you’ll want to actually take the placement exams. All of the placement exam info can be found on our New Student Registration website. This specific page will give you information on what placement exams you need to take, when you need to take them by and how to actually take each test.

After completing your placement exams, you’ll want to start preparing for your academic advising session. What is an academic advising appointment? It’s an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a faculty member in the major you have declared. During the academic advising appointment, you will discuss your placement exam results, classes important to your major, the Core Curriculum, and potential electives. Together, you will craft a first semester class schedule that balances requirements with general courses of interest. Juniors: Get a Headstart on the Admission Process

You’ve already taken many of the steps to be eligible for admission consideration to Butler University.  You’ve taken solid academic courses and scheduled your classes for senior year. It’s important to know that by graduation you must complete four years of English, three years of math, three years of science, two years of social studies and two years of the same foreign language. (*Please note that if you are interested in physician assistant or pharmacy, you must complete four years of math and four years of science.) Wondering about ACT or SAT exams? You must take either the SAT or ACT exam with writing. So what are your next steps?

March & April

  • We offer a Junior Preview Day visit for all juniors interested in applying to Butler. Be sure to register early because spots fill up soon. *Please note registration for these events will open in March on www.butler.edu/visit.
  • Most colleges look the rigor of your senior year fall semester classes and may even wait for your grades. Be sure to select of full load of solid academic classes.
  • Search the internet for college information and review the publications you have received.
  • Develop your preliminary list of top college choices.

May – July

  • Keep studying for your ACT and/or SAT.
  • Visit us on campus at our Butler 101 event. (*Registration for Butler 101 opens in April)
  • Start working on those application essays. You can get a head start by visiting www.butler.edu/apply to view the essay prompts.

August

  • You can begin applying to Butler on August 1. 
  • Retake your ACT and/or SAT if necessary.
  • Schedule an Open House visit to see if Butler University might be a good fit for you. (Registration for Open House opens in August.)

Deposit Deadline Approaching

What is the enrollment deposit?

Freshman students are required to pay a non-refundable enrollment deposit of $300 with their admission acceptance. The enrollment deposit is required in order to reserve a space in the Class of 2016.  All admission deposits must be received or postmarked by May 1.

Submitting an Enrollment Deposit after May 1

An Enrollment Deposit postmarked after May 1 will be considered late. The University reserves the right to return your Enrollment Deposit based on space availability in the freshman class. If your deposit is received after May 1, you need to call your admission counselor to let them know.

How do I accept admission and pay the enrollment deposit?

Online:

1. Go to www.butler.edu/deposit.
2. Fill in the form and verify your information.
3. Then…pay the enrollment deposit via MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or electronic check. For timely processing, we strongly suggest you submit your admission acceptance and enrollment deposit online via my.butler.edu You will receive immediate confirmation that your acceptance and deposit have been accepted.

By Mail:

Complete the Enrollment Form and attach a check, credit card information or money order for $300 payable to Butler University. If you mail in the form, please allow at least 2 weeks from the date you mailed your Enrollment Form and enrollment deposit for our system to be updated.

By submitting your deposit by February 1 makes you eligible to:

  • Be among the first to register for classes and get your ideal class schedule
  • Submit housing and roommate preferences
  • Join a Freshman Living-Learning Center

 

True Blue

Find out what it’s really like to be a Butler student. Admitted students are encouraged to visit campus this spring and ‘shadow’ a current Butler University student through a typical day. The True Blue program takes place Monday through Thursday starting January 30 and ending April 12 (excluding March 12 — 15). It is a great opportunity to learn more about the academic and extra-curricular opportunities that exist for you as a prospective member of the Class of 2016. You will attend classes with your host, meet faculty, staff, and other current students, and have lunch in our award-winning dining hall. Our focus is about providing you an inside look into your major and life as a student at Butler University. By shadowing Butler students, you can gain better insight into the expectations of college, which in turn will help you to be better prepared for college life.

We encourage you to register for True Blue before spots fill up. Register now.

You Got In! Now What?

Congratulations! We’re excited to welcome you to the Class of 2016! Now that you’re in, you might be wondering, “What am I supposed to do next?” Here’s a list to get you started on what steps you should take next to become part of the Butler community:

1. Mail back your enrollment form. This will allow you to get registered for New Student Registration beginning in March. You can find more information about the event on our website.
2. Send in your enrollment deposit. Deposits made prior to May 1 are refundable with written request until that date. After May 1, deposits are non-refundable.
3. Visit Butler. You can view a complete list of admitted student events on www.butler.edu/admitted-students.
4. Join the Class of 2016 Facebook page. This page is a great way to connect with other admitted students and even find a roommate.
5. Consider your housing options. Speaking of roommates. You will be receiving your housing form inside the New Student Registration packet. It is a questionnaire you can fill out to ensure you get matched up with a roommate of your choosing or one that shares similar interests and living habits.
6. Send in your Transcripts. We do require that you send in your final transcripts upon graduation. For Indiana high school students, we also need your diploma type posted.
7. Tell everyone you know that you are a part of the Bulldog family!

Studying for Finals (Tips from Admission)

Final exams can be filled with pressure, especially while you are waiting to hear about your college admission decision. We are bringing you our Top 15 List on how to prepare for the dreaded end-of-semester finals.

1. Alternate study spots. Change your location to avoid daydreaming or dozing off.
2. Study in chunks so you can retain more information. It smart to take a 15 minute break every once in a while to refuel and recharge.
3. Prevent test anxiety. This can be done by listening to calming music, taking deep breathes or picturing yourself acing the test.
4. Manager your time. Schedule your day out in advance and stick to the plan.
5. Don’t pull an all-nighter. People say this helps them study, but it is actually not good for the body or the memory.
6. Calculate your grades in each class to determine what score you’ll need to get the grade your hoping for in that class. However, don’t stress yourself out over your desired grade.
7. If the exam is open book, still study.
8. Eat a nutritious meal and drink water before taking the exam. It will keep you alert and focused throughout the testf.
9. Don’t drink too much caffeine.
10. Meet with teachers if you have any material you need help reviewing.
11. Exercise to help keep your energy up. This can help you power through the exam.
12. Create an environment conducive to studying. Ditch the loud music, TV playing in the background and, if at all possible, constant social media breaks.
13. Make it interesting by using memory aids or mnemonic devices.
14. Study during the day when you are most alert. If you study better in the evenings, then plan to study during that time.
15. Test yourself or have someone else test you to find out which areas you need more work in.

You’ve Applied. Now What?

You’ve submitted all of your applications, written numerous essays on a variety of topics and collected dozens of recommendations. Now all that’s left to do is wait for an answer. Some might say completing all the paperwork and taking the tests is the hardest portion of the process. However, those of you waiting for your decision letter to arrive know that is actually the most difficult part of the entire process. So, now that all the applications are in and you are just waiting to hear something back, what comes next?

You will receive an acknowledgement email that your application has been received along with a short video, which takes a quick look at the admission decision process. Your probably wondering how we make our admission decisions. We start by taking a holistic look at you as a student and as an individual. We take into consideration your GPA, course work, test scores, resume of activities, essay and any other information you or your school counselor provide us with. From there, several admission counselors review the file and then meet with a committee to decide if you are admissible. Once we have reached your decision, it gets entered into our system. Finally, we send out all admission decision on December 15.

You’re probably wondering “Well, what I am supposed to do while I wait for my decision?” Good question.
1. Our advice is to continue working hard and keep your grades up.
2. Don’t forget about money. This is the perfect time to start looking into financial aid and scholarships.
3. Write thank-you letters to anyone who gave you a recommendation.
4. Alert your admission counselor if there are any changes to your file (ex: new grades or test scores)
5. Have fun and hang out with friends.

We know it can be difficult waiting for the admission decision. When the “did I’s” or “didn’t I’s” become overwhelming, try to stay focused on your last few months of high school.

 

Don’t Let Senioritis Get the Best of You

Senioritis, noun: A crippling disease that strikes high school seniors. Symptoms include: laziness, an over-excessive wearing of track pants, old athletic shirts and sweatshirts. Also features a lack of studying, repeated absences and a generally dismissive attitude. The only known cure is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

Senioritis is common among many high school seniors. You’ve worked hard for three years, are now waiting for acceptance letters from the universities you applied to and want to blow off some steam (finally). Although you may want to take a much needed mental break. Don’t!

Senior year is your opportunity to strengthen your skills while broadening your horizons. Rather than taking a lighter load, we suggest you enroll in AP courses or other classes that challenge you. A few other tips we suggest for combating senioritis include keeping a calendar of your activities and important deadlines. We also suggest you stay involved in extracurriculars, volunteer work and sports that help you stay focused. Plus, these activities look great on your college application! Just remember to not let senioritis rule you because Butler University does take both first and second semester grades into consideration (the same goes for quarters or trimesters after the date in which you applied).
