• Learn more about Butler University’s Core Curriculum. In your first semester, you will take a First Year Seminar and will likely take one or two other Core classes alongside one or two courses from your major. Select several topics that interest you in each category.
• Review the course catalog that has been specially prepared for New Student Registration. It highlights courses most appropriate for first-year student enrollment, including course descriptions of Core Curriculum classes.
• Consider potential second majors and minors when choosing classes. Your advising appointment will be with the advisor of your primary major; if you intend to pursue multiple programs of study, alert your advisor to this at the beginning of your appointment.
• As you look for courses, be flexible with regard to topic, class section, and time of day.
• You will need to enroll in at least 12 credit hours to be considered a full-time student.
  • The average first year student will enroll in 15-16 credit hours.
  • Most courses are 3-credit hours each, but some are 2 credits and others, particularly natural science courses with labs, are 5-credit hours.
• Get all of your advising questions answered on our New Student Registration website.

Butler 101 is a great way to learn more about all that Butler University has to offer. During this event, you will get to experience an admission and financial aid presentation, student-led campus tour, and cookout with current students and faculty. Faculty and staff from every department will be on hand to discuss all things Butler and answer your questions. We hope that you stop by Butler’s beautiful campus this summer to get a glimpse of what college life is like at BU.

Sophomore Year:

• Start thinking about careers you might want to pursue. Interactive sites such as Drive of Your Life can help you learn more about the 16 different career clusters and the areas that might interest you.
• Check in with your counselor to make sure you have your junior and senior year coursework mapped out. View the list of Butler University admission requirements.
• Look for summer volunteer or job options. These will look great on a resume!
• Take the PSAT or PACT. You can even take practice tests online for free.

Junior Year:

• Start researching colleges and universities. Sites such as Cappex.com, Zinch.com, CollegeXpress.com, and CollegeBoard.com can be extremely helpful.
• Being gathering information about cost of tuition, scholarships, and financial aid. Do not discount a private college or university because many times they are as affordable as a public institution. View our “Opportunity Cost” blog for more information.
• Take the ACT and/or SAT. Research which test the schools you are applying to prefer. If you are better at one test, you might want to think about retaking it because many schools “superscore” (colleges will look at the results of all attempts at the SAT and/or ACT. The school will take the highest score in each subsection, even if on different attempts, and will compile these to calculate the superscore).
• Start visiting schools. Butler offers campus visits throughout the year and on select Saturdays. See a complete list of visit opportunities.
• Review your senior schedule with your counselor. Remember that AP and honors courses look great on a transcript!
• Ask for recommendation letters now. There is nothing worse than waiting until the last minute to ask for a letter of recommendation, so why not ask early?

With New Student Registration dates quickly filling up, we ask that you select your top three date preferences as soon as possible.

To register:

• Log in to the student status page.
• Click on New Student Registration Date Selection Form under “Forms.”
• Complete the form and click “Submit.”

We realize that many students are hesitant to select a NSR date and want to give you a few reasons why it is a good idea to do so. New Student Registration allows you to:

1. Schedule your classes
2. Meet other newly admitted students
3. Get to know your professors
4. Mingle with current students and make friends before you even move to campus
5. Meet your academic advisor
6. Sit in on helpful sessions to prepare you for your college journey

Still deciding between schools? That is fine too. We highly recommend that you attend NSR because it is a great way to help narrow down your choices. As long as you make your final decision by May 1, your $300 enrollment fee is completely refundable. Please do not hesitate to contact your admission counselor or email admission@butler.edu with any question you make have. We will be more than happy to assist you.

1. Meet other current, admitted, or prospective students. This helps you get to know people before you even arrive on campus.
2. See what Butler is really like. View our posts, photos, videos, pins, and more to get an idea of what campus is all about.
3. Learn about events and other upcoming opportunities taking place at Butler. Once you are here, we know that you’ll fall in love with the campus.
4. Get the real scoop. To find out what others are saying about Butler, a major or a career choice, look for mentions by searching @gobutleru, #Butler2017, and #ButlerUniversity.
5. Stay on top of important dates and deadlines. It’s a great way to keep up with application deadlines, admission requirements, and other key information.
6. BONUS: It’s fun and we want to make your college search and final decision as easy as possible!

1. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you submit your deposit. A refundable $300 enrollment deposit must be submitted on or before May 1 to guarantee your place at Butler University. To deposit:
   • Log on to your student status page and view your admission decision.
   • If you haven’t done so already, click “Reply to Offer of Admission” under the “Forms” section. Complete the form and click “Submit.”
   • This will take you back to your main status page. Click “Submit Payment for $300.00.” Complete the form and click “Submit.”
2. Select your New Student Registration Date. Even if you haven’t made your final college selection, we encourage you to attend New Student Registration. New Student Registration is a day for admitted students to come on campus to schedule classes, meet their professors, hear from current students, and more. It’s also is a great way to help you discover if Butler is the right fit for you. To select your date:
   • Log on to your student status page.
   • Click “New Student Registration Date Selection” under the “Forms” section on your main status page. Complete the form and click “Submit.”
   • The Office of Admission will email you additional information with your date confirmation.
3. Select your housing. While you have until June to select housing, we strongly recommend you do it as soon as possible to ensure you get your top choice. Even if you haven’t found a roommate yet, please complete the forms now and go back to add your roommate in at a later date. To complete your housing forms:
   • Log on to My.Butler
   • Select “Self-Service”
   • Select “Student Center”
   • Scroll to the bottom to find “Personal Information”
   • Click on “Apply for Housing”
   • Select “Getting Started”

1. You get to actually see our beautiful campus firsthand. Pictures and videos are cool, but there’s nothing quite like experiencing it for yourself.
2. Butler is home to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The fieldhouse has reigned as one of the nation’s great sports arenas for more than six decades. This classic facility was constructed in 1928 and was the nation’s largest basketball arena at that time. The legendary building has stood the test of time, maintaining the splendor, character, and atmosphere that made it one of the nation’s most famous basketball arenas nearly a century ago. Hinkle Fieldhouse is also home to the Milan Miracle, the memorable 1954 victory of tiny Milan High School over the much larger Muncie Central. The film Hoosiers, loosely based on that event, used Hinkle Fieldhouse when filming the climactic game of the popular movie.
3. Indianapolis is just minutes from downtown Indianapolis, the 12th largest city in the nation. The Colts and Pacers play just a few miles from campus. Downtown Indy also boasts rock concerts, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Broadway shows, art galleries, shopping, museums, and every kind of restaurant imaginable!
4. Current students will guide you around campus. Chances are you will get to know your tour guide pretty well, which gives you the opportunity to build a network of friends almost instantly!
5. Butler is home to one of the largest public observatories in the world. Holcomb Observatory houses a 38-inch Cassegrain reflectors, which makes it the largest observatory in Indiana.
6. Butler University houses a Starbucks in the student union. Need we say more?
7. You can experience Broad Ripple Village. This popular, eclectic section of the city is located just five minutes from campus and features boutiques, cafés, galleries, dozens of restaurants, and an exciting nightlife.
8. We have the cutest mascots ever. Butler University has a long tradition of live mascots. Blue II and Blue III, often referred to as “Trip”, currently reign over the school. Visit the Doggie Bag to learn more about these adorable pooches.
9. The Butler men’s basketball team is currently ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 and No. 11 in the AP Poll. While there is more to Butler University than basketball (for example: 60+ majors, 140+ student clubs and activities, etc.), it’s still exciting to be a part of such a successful season.
10. The Health and Recreation Complex has a lazy river. While you may not be able to try it out during your visit, you can enjoy all the perks of this amazing facility when you become a Butler student.

• Attend college fairs at your high school or in your community. View a complete list on www.butler.edu/visit. Don’t see your area or high school listed? Keep checking back for updates or contact your admission counselor.
• Talk to your guidance counselor about taking the SAT or ACT. You can also take the PSAT for an opportunity to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
• Now is a good time to take your extracurricular involvement to the next level. It’s important to have a strong résumé when applying to college.
• Speaking of résumés, this is a great time to begin working on yours. Start putting together a list of your accomplishments and involvements and update it as needed. While Butler does not require a résumé, we strongly recommend that you have one.
• Register with NCAA Clearinghouse if you plan to play Division I college athletics. You can find more information on their website at www.ncaa.org.
• Plan your senior year. It’s important to discuss your course schedule with your guidance counselor to ensure you meet the graduation requirements. We also suggest that you begin to think about Butler University’s admission requirements when filling out your senior schedule.
