About Me:

Hey everyone, I am Cathryn. I am going into my 5th year of pharmacy at Butler University. I am also working toward a minor in Science, Technology & Society! In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with friends and writing. I've been working on NaNoWriMo and am hoping to be published at some point in the near future as well. Most of the time you can catch me studying in the library or browsing the Internet. Oh, and did I mention that I got married last summer?

Semester Goals: A Treatise

I really need to make a better effort to stick to my goals for this semester, as it’s my last one on campus and I think I could really NAIL IT if I tried.

Here’s what I’m thinking.

1) Early morning workout. I’m going to try and wake up every day at the same time and get a workout in before class. I’ve been graced with an awesome schedule where I don’t have many early days (just one 8am class! which I did to myself!)

2) Friday study times. So I have Fridays off, but I’m taking 19 credit hours (again, WHY AM I DOING THIS TO MYSELF?), which means I’ll definitely need that day to catch up on everything. I’m planning on camping out at the library or Hearthstone on these days, having Internet silence (ie–no Facebook and Tumblr and all the time-wasting sites I go on) while I’m studious.

3) COOKING. Last semester, Curtis and I ate chili and mac and cheese, Hamburger Helper, and fast food. I can’t emphasize enough how excellently we’re modeling a Poor American Diet. I want to make a better effort to plan meals and lunches and get vegetables in my diet.

Example of Poor American Diet:

Those are tacos and refried beans which we dumped queso over. I mean, you know. Priorities.

Last goal: study for two hours every night. This one is going to be the hardest, I can already tell. BUT I WILL DO IT FOR THE GOOD OF THE TREATISE.

The Late Night Routine

….soooo.

Normally when I have exams, I plan out my study schedule so I can be in bed with a reasonable 6+ hours of sleep. This set of exams kind of creeped up me in that the more I studied, the less prepared I felt, so the more I had to study. So that cut into my sleep time. I’ve also been spending lots of time holing up on campus in various rooms I never knew existed, and some rooms that have changed drastically since I last had classes in them.

Yeah the last time I checked there weren’t skeletons and a row of butts in the lab on the 3rd floor. SURPRISE!

There’s something weird about being on campus past 10PM too. During clusters week, you’re not alone. In fact it’s completely normal. Walking down the halls, you can hear people in rooms giggling (at notes? hardly), and there’s a feeling of camaraderie. Or at least resignation to the fact that we all procrastinated this hard that we have to hole up together on campus at odd hours of the night.

My sleep schedule is so weird right now, it feels like it’s supposed to be 8PM but it’s… not. And last night at midnight it felt like 8PM. I need to just push a reset button this weekend!

(PS there’s a lot of BUPD around campus late at night too! We should all pool our money and order like 50 pizzas, gosh.)

Givin’ Thaaanks

…and taking names.

Sorry it’s been Radio Silence on the Cathryn Channel. I wish I could say I was doing terribly interesting things. Well, hold on. It’s the Internet and none of you can find me.

So I’ve spent the past two weeks on a soul journey, riding a Harley across the colorful American landscape of broken dreams and I met an ex-con named Spike in Tuscan who hand knits baby afghans.

Just kidding, I’ve been making medchem flashcard sets and drinking coffee. And hosting Thanksgiving!

Christmas lights/kitchen lights do not make good photograph lights. :P

My novel has come to a grinding halt, although I’ve got a good direction for finishing it and I’m hoping to get it done by the end of the year! Although I just did the calculations, and instead of the NaNoWriMo 1,667 words/day, I still need to write 1,100 words/day to get it done by the end of the year. …. Dang it. Well, I’ll figure something out.

And so I’m back! From outer space!

Usually by the time classes start again here at Butler, I’m wondering where the summer’s gone. For once, even though this was my last summer ever (next year I’ll be on experiential rotations!), I was actually kind of excited to come back. I was bored on vacation. That’s sad, I know.

I wanted to kick off the semester with a video blog but I haven’t had any time to sit down and do one! I get all handsy when I make vlogs and I have to edit the heck out of them, so I figured I’d do one toward the end of the week to talk about all the internships and things I did this summer. Because I have so much to do before Friday morning. It’s just the kind of week I’m having.

Monday morning’s commute out of Fishers made me think I needed NASA to coordinate a flight path or something for everybody. It was raining, but not that hard, or at least I didn’t think so! The trip with rush hour traffic usually takes me around 30-35 minutes, but it took me an hour and ten minutes to get in my seat in the pharmacy building. I was SO LATE! There were flash floods and everything!

Yesterday I completely bruised my pinky toe on our coffee table to the point I thought I broke it. I didn’t take pictures because it’s kind of hideous. It’s getting better though.

And we have 3 quizzes, two assignments, and I have to start thinking about a research design for my philosophy of science class by Tuesday. It’s been a rough first week.

So I’m waiting in the new study space in Irwin Library for traffic to die down so I can go home and study bacteria flashcards.

The new study space is pretty cool! This is a tiny shot of it, I know. But the chairs are red and my water bottle is full of water from the new Brita Hydration Stations. Ooo, ahhh!

How to lose your friends and alienate people

Listen to Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and Lana del Rey.

JT. I JUST LOVE YOU. I’m also a sucker for puns, if you can really call this a pun. It’s really just … the way he says the phrase in the song. In other news, I’m still aghast at the fact that it is May and my semester ends in less than 12 hours. What is going on??

I don’t know why, but I’ve been listening to Backstreet Boys and NSYNC exclusively for the past couple of weeks. It’s so nostalgic. Backstreet Boys were probably the first CD I got, ever, and I listened to it ALL THE TIME.

Boy bands inspire me to learn about coronary artery stents and seizures and aperspectival objectivity.

But if boy bands aren’t your thing, then here’s some actual respectable music:

HOLD ON by Alabama Shakes. Coming to the Vogue in July ahh!

PS – I will not apologize for the sheer amount of gifs that are appearing on my blog.
