Happy Friday everyone! Butler has a Visiting Writer Series program in which several writers come and speak at the university throughout the semester. This semester, there will be a total of six authors. The first visiting writer was Chuck Klosterman.
Chuck Klosterman is a New York Times bestselling author and has written seven books. My FYS class read his book IV and I absolutely loved it. Klosterman writes about pop culture and music, which are two things I absolutely love. He spoke in the Reilly Room last night, and again to three sections of my FYS today at noon. I had dance team practice last night when he spoke, so I missed it, but fortunately I was able to have dinner with him beforehand. My professor invited me and another student from a different section of the class to join Klosterman and several people from the English department in a dinner last night.
We went to Adobo Grill downtown and got to chat with Klosterman about music, books, and his writing. I mostly sat back and observed everything everyone was saying, and from my observations I deduced that Chuck Klosterman is a very intelligent man. He is also incredibly creative. He was saying that he has never written anything he hasn’t published- he doesn’t even keep a journal. He also said that he hates all of his old stuff he has written. It makes him angry to go back and look at what he writes after he is finished because it thinks it is all really bad. I thought that was interesting because even though he ends up hating everything after the fact, he must enjoy it as he is writing it- I certainly do!
It was an incredibly cool experience and he told me it was “great” meeting me, which made me excited that an author I like enjoyed meeting me, because I am a nerd. Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for reading
