Happy Wednesday everyone. The lingerie store Aerie launched a new campaign in which the models all remain unretouched, and I’m pretty excited about it.
Aerie is a lingerie/loungewear brand associated with American Eagle whose main demographic consists of 15-21 year old young women. Typically, girls around this age are growing into themselves and getting comfortable with their bodies. In this process, however, many teenage girls struggle with body image. Seeing flawlessly Photoshopped advertisements and magazine covers of models and celebrities in stores and online only aids in the insecurities and body image issues some teenagers might have. In a hope to deflect that self-conscious attitude, Aerie decided to launch a campaign in which their models are not retouched.
It upsets me thinking about people, regardless of gender, who think there is something wrong with their bodies. After every outrageous retouching scandal, it becomes more and more apparent that the images the media feeds to us are not real. We are all conscious that advertisements present us with false ideals, yet we can’t help but compare ourselves to these flawless images and wish it were us. Although this mindset is common, it is so incredibly skewed. As I’ve mentioned before, I love it when people have imperfections and quirks. It makes us human. Having this mindset naturally means I am jazzed about this ad campaign. It’s very powerful that a company geared towards a group that is stereotypically self-conscious is presenting customers with girls like them wearing the products they wear themselves. Aerie certainly isn’t the first company to feature unretouched images, but there are really only a select few who have.
Although I don’t typically shop there, I fully support Aerie in making it known that even models are not perfect. This campaign is incredibly beautiful and inspiring, and I hope to see more like it in the future.
