Music Monday: Amy Winehouse

Happy Monday all! Today at lunch, one of my friends started singing the song “Valerie,” and it inspired me to write about Amy Winehouse on this fine Music Monday.

Amy Winehouse was an English soul/R&B artist who became popular around 2007. She released her first album Back to Black in the UK in 2006, and from there, she became fairly popular. Winehouse won a Brit Award for Best British Female Artist in 2007, and was named 26 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Women in Music.

Besides being known for her voice, Winehouse was known for her petite frame, accompanied by her many tattoos, beehive hairdo, thick winged eyeliner, and alcohol abuse. Winehouse died in July of 2011 due to alcohol poisoning, joining a handful of other mega-talented musicians who died at the age of 27. After Winehouse’s death, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, a compilation of unreleased songs, was put on sale.

Amy Winehouse’s voice was incredibly soulful and powerful, and it is truly a shame that she died so young. She was super talented, and I am indeed a fan. Here are a few of my faves by her.

Have a great week and thanks for reading :)

Thoughts With Bekah

Happy Friday everyone! I was not too sure what to write about today, so I decided to share some random thoughts that I have had recently.

1. Ke$ha makes me want to vomit. I heard “Die Young” yesterday for the first time in a while, and it reaffirmed how much I hate that song. It just makes me angry whenever I hear it. If Ke$ha can be a famous musician, so can I.

2. Putting something in quotations and adding a “…” to the end makes it seem far more dramatic than it needs to. For example: I ate the last cookie. Verses “I ate the last cookie…” The second option seems much for mysterious. Who is the “I” that ate this cookie? Why was this cookie eaten? So.Much.Mystery.

3. Starting a phrase with “and” or “because” adds an infinite number of Internet feels. For example: “I will always love you.” Verses “And I will always love you.” (For extra feels, add a “…” to the end. Oh so dramatic.

4. I would really hate to be a stick of deodorant. This is a strange thought to have, but honestly, what a horrible existence that would be. Sure you would smell nice, but your face would constantly be shoved under someone’s smelly underarms. Ick.

5. I can’t get over the fact we can’t see our own faces. You can see the rest of your body, your arms, legs, torso, etc., but the fact we can’t see our face, one of the most identifiable things about humans, boggles my mind. Yes, you can see your face in the mirror, but it really isn’t your face. It is just a reflection. What if your reflection as you see it is different from how people see you? What if it is similar to how hearing your voice as you speak is different than hearing it on a recording, even though everyone else insists you always sound the same?

Mind blown.

WHAT IF YOUR WHOLE LIFE HAS BEEN A LIE?!?!

I hope you reflect on some of these thoughts and reassess your lives. Have a great weekend and thanks for reading :)

Blue II’s Birthday

Happy Friday everyone! Today is Butler Blue II’s birthday. The former mascot is turning 9 today, and there was a big party in the bookstore and Starbucks earlier this afternoon. There were cameras, cookies, cupcakes, and a lot of people. Let me remind you that Blue II is a dog.

A picture of Blue II.

Personally, I have nothing against Blue II. He’s been our school mascot for many years and everybody loves him. The thing I don’t understand is why there was a birthday party for a dog. All I know is that I have never had such a bangin’ party (my family forgot my birthday once, but that’s a story for another time), and I’d like to think I’m more likeable than a bulldog. Apparently not. Apparently no human being is more likeable than an bulldog because I have never heard of the news being at an average human’s birthday bash.

I’m not complaining exactly because I would by lying to you if I said I didn’t take advantage of the free Insomnia Cookies at the party, but I would also be lying if I said that I thought throwing a dog a birthday party was a casual thing to do. Oh well, whatever floats your boat I suppose.

I was informed that Tripp’s birthday falls over Christmas break, so I wonder what the party situation will be for his birthday next year. We should probably have one party before break and one once we come back, just to be safe. I mean, that’s the logical thing to do. As long as there are free cookies, I guess it’s alright.

Have a great weekend and thanks for reading :)

Music Monday: The Grammy Awards

Happy Monday, all! Last night was the 55th Grammy Awards. Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the show due to dance team practice and several meetings for my sorority. Sigh. Since I missed out on the show, I took to the Internet to see some coverage of the night’s festivities.

Adele won again this year (no surprise there) for best pop solo performance for “Set Fire to the Rain.” Sadly, Fun. beat out Ed Sheeran for song of the year with their song “Some Nights.” Fun. also won for best new artist. The Black Keys won best rock performance for their song “Lonely Boy,” which makes me happy. Mumford and Sons unsurprisingly won album of the year for their sophomore album, “Babel.”

Other exciting musicy events in the evening included Taylor Swift throwing shade at her ex Harry Styles. Taylor opened the show with her song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” She used a mocking British accent during the speaking portion of the song where she says her ex calls her and says, “I still love you.” Seriously, Taylor? He’s Harry Styles. Don’t mess with him.

My favorite aspect of any awards show is the fashion. There were some good dresses and some bad ones. The most talked about outfit was Katy Perry’s. She wore a mint green Gucci dress with a very revealing neckline. Judging by pictures I have seen, her dress seemed to distract everyone who spoke to her last night.

Ellen DeGeneres distracted by Katy Perry's dress

If you did get a chance to watch the award show, I certainly hope you enjoyed it. Have a great week, and thanks for reading :)

High School is Not Cool

Happy Wednesday! Earlier today I went with some of my friends to visit my high school. Why I did this, I have no idea. I was not a fan of high school and was incredibly happy when it ended, so I told myself I would not go back and visit. One of my friends wanted to go, and there were a few teachers I wanted to see, so I thought I would tag along. As soon as we entered the building I felt incredibly uncomfortable. I did not want to seem like one of “those girls” whose entire life revolves around high school being the glory days, but I felt like that by going back to visit.

She doesn't even go here!

We went during lunch so the cafeteria (conveniently located right by the door we entered) was full of students. I felt like I was in that scene in Mean Girls when that random girl shows up to their spiritual cleanse and Damian yells, “She doesn’t even go here!”  It was nice to see some of my favorite teachers, as well as some of my friends who still go there, but I wish I would not have gone. It was incredibly weird. I am an awkward person, (have you seen my awkward vlog?) so being in a building with hundreds of people that I would avoid eye contact with if I saw them on the street was a little uncomfortable for me. Luckily I did not have any specific awkward encounters, although that would make for a great story.

On a happier note, I recently rediscovered a favorite blog of mine! The blog is called A Beautiful Mess and it is absolutely fabulous! I came across this blog last yearish and stumbled upon it the other day. It has posts about crafts, photography, recipes, decor, fashion, and beauty, so if any of those topics interest you, for sure check it out! Enjoy the rest of your week, and thanks for reading :)
