Happy Music Monday, all! Last Wednesday, I saw Macklemore and Ryan Lewis in concert. They played at Indiana University, and let me tell you, it was quite an eventful evening.
I went with my friends Sam and Katie, and we got to the concert about 15 minutes before it was supposed to start. Since we didn’t get there too early, we expected a long line waiting to get in. To our surprise, there was hardly anyone in the parking lot, and absolutely no line. When we got to the door, the security guards acted like we could just walk through, then abruptly were all like “Ohh oh! Hold up. Nice try!” They looked through our bags and let us through the door. It was weird.
We found our seats and looked out across the barren arena and were further confused by the lack of audience members. The first opener, Talib Kweli, performed, but it felt like no one was listening. It was like when you’re talking with a group of people, but no one is really listening to the person trying to talk to everyone. A few more people showed up, and a rapper named Wale (pronounced wall-aayy) performed next. Wale was horrible. All I can say is no way Wale, no way. He had the whole audience chanting incredibly offensive lyrics to one of his songs for a good five minutes, and it successfully made me uncomfortable. After that episode, he invited players from the IU basketball team onto the stage where they rapped and danced with him. They are basketball players. Not celebrities. Not rappers. It was so, so strange.
After Wale, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took the stage. They were incredible! Macklemore danced around the stage the whole time and talked to the audience about the origin of each song before he performed it. Before “Thrift Shop,” he spotted a guy in the audience with a fur coat and asked if he could wear it for the song.
The whole crew in action.
He did, and it was great. “Same Love” was one of my favorites, as was “And We Danced.” He was so, so fun to watch and I think I want to be his best friend. If you ever have the chance to go see him, please do. It will be a great time even if the rest of the evening is incredibly weird.
P.S. I’ll put a video I took of “Same Love” at the bottom!
Have a great week and thanks for reading
