First Kiss

Happy Thursday everyone! Since you’re reading this on the Internet, and this video has been all over the Internet the past few days, I’m assuming you’ve seen the video of strangers kissing. Let’s talk about it.

The short film titled “First Kiss” was posted to Youtube on March 10 and has already garnered over 40 million views. When I first saw the video, I thought it was a relational art piece done by an artist somewhere to show the extreme vulnerability a kiss requires, and to study how humans interact with one another. After further research, however, it turns out the video is an ad for a clothing company. Say whaaat?

The video was created by the Los Angeles based clothing company WREN and serves as their newest advertisement for their brand. Everyone in the video is incredibly attractive and well dressed, and that is because they are models, singers, and actors wearing clothing by WREN. Although this video is an advertisement, everyone in the video was indeed a stranger to his or her make out buddy, and no one is acting, so it is still very real.

I think the video is incredibly beautiful. The whole piece perfectly captures the vulnerability, tenderness, and awkwardness of a kiss. The film is shot in black and white, which calls attention to the participants without any other distractions; it’s about the interaction of the two kissers. Plus, I think black and white film seems more candid and intimate for some reason. In addition to the filming, the music is perfectly soft as well. It’s tender and passionate just like the actors and actresses in the video. My favorite aspect of the film is the extreme awkwardness and uncertainty you can sense from each and every person on screen. The nervous laughter and joking is such a natural reaction for humans to have in an uncomfortable situation. It is just so real! They fidget and shuffle around a bit and laugh and make jokes, just as any human in that situation would do in order to make an extremely uncomfortable situation seem more relaxed.

My favorite parts are when the kissers are still introducing themselves to one another. The first is around the 58 second mark, and one of the kissers says, “This is actually pretty scary.” I also love at the 1:28 mark when one of the kissers says, “Let’s look at each other for a second, okay?” Both of these are the most tender and human parts of the whole thing. They are so honest and just raw reactions to something so intimate. I just love it!

Melissa Coker, WREN’s founder and creative director commented on the video saying, “We make these fashion films every season. I strive to make them an interesting film that exists on its own rather than something that feels like a commercial.” That is a smart move if you ask me. I think the reason it is so incredibly popular is because it such an honest and candid portrayal of human interaction. I think everyone is seeing this as a work of art first, and a fashion ad second. Well played, WREN. Well played.

Have a great rest of the week, and thanks for reading :)
