About Me:

Hey, I'm Austin, and I'm currently a freshman here at Butler! I'm an ENTJ, a travel junkie, and an entrepreneur. I'm an Alpha Kappa Psi brother & True Blue Mentor, as well as being a part of Entrepreneurship & Innovation club, the volunteer center, and a student production crew member at the brand new Schrott Center. I also am a part of the student-run business, the Butler Bed Buddy. I'm always looking for something to get involved with on campus as well. Go Dawgs!

First and foremost, I apologize for the lack of posts lately; my life has been flipped upside down this past week, and I barely have time to do, well, really anything besides work. While this is not a bad thing, I have yet to really blog about my experiences with classes ending, finals, and the final phases of my student run business – the Butler Bed Buddy. I have personally been working endlessly on closing out our business for the current semester, and it has been insane.

We actually received a full order of 1,250 units of bed buddies, which are a pillow / stuffed animal modeled after Butler Blue II. For those who don’t know much about it, check out my other blog here about it. Anyways, 1,250 units is A LOT, and we ended up using pretty much the entire RBE “War Room” as storage. It’s known as the “war room” because that’s where all students in the Real Business Experience program meet as teams in order to form & run their businesses.

The war room….AKA the Butler Bed Buddy storage room for now..

These bags (each filled with about 100 bed buddies) came in last Friday, and I have been working relentlessly in order to get out all current orders for people who have preordered online all semester. As of today we have gotten rid of about 4 & 1/2 bags, and we’re estimating to get rid of the rest of the half-full bag by Saturday, which is when I actually move out. :(

All in all, this has been a really great semester. I have been really pleased with my RBE team as a whole, even though we weren’t as organized as I would have liked for us to be. Here’s to hoping that next semester is better! I will blog more about the finals I have tomorrow night, so say a prayer or just hope I do good!

The Butler Bed Buddy – Part Two

As of today, I can officially announce that my student-run business, the Butler Bed Buddy, was approved for a $5,000 loan to continue onto the next semester of the Real Business Experience! As a part of the first semester of the Real Business Experience program, students are required to go in front of an actual funding panel that the College of Business brings in (which are usually alumni of the College of Business) in order to hear our proposition for our business. Businesses are allowed to ask for a maximum amount of a $5,000 loan for the second semester, which they put to use in continuing their businesses full force! All of the loans are funded through the College of Business and, of course, have to be repaid at the end of the semester.

I’m really happy to be a part of the Butler Bed Buddy team, which is modeled off of our mascot Butler Blue II. This class has truly shown me why I want to be a part of the College of Business as well as becoming a global entrepreneur in the future as well. My business will be using the $5,000 loan we were approved for in order to order more products to hopefully wholesale to local companies in order for them to sell the Butler Bed Buddy as well!

My First NBA Game

Unlike most of my regular Tuesdays, today was pretty extraordinary due to the fact that I was more productive today alone than I usually find myself to be on my off days on Tuesday and Thursday where I usually only have once class. Today was different, though – my only class was canceled, and I was still incredibly productive! I was able to edit a total of 15 pages of the final copy of the business plan for my business group, Butler Bed Buddy, and I met in several different meetings as well as working on my final presentation that is on Thursday for my business group.

Besides usual school work and whatnot, I actually got to attend my first NBA game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse – and I got to see the Indiana Pacers play the Cleveland Cavaliers!

Our original seats...in the middle of the upper balcony. Ick!

The game was overall great, and while initially my friends from Alpha Kappa Psi I went with didn’t get great seats, a few of us actually moved down to the lower level by sneaking down there! We were able to sit in the lower level through the entire second half of the game, which the Pacers actually won after coming back from being down around 20 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter! Overall, it was definitely a great experience for my first NBA game, and I can’t wait to go back again!

Where we ended up moving to in the lower level..it was awesome!

The Butler Bed Buddy

Sorry for the lack of blogging lately, guys! I’ve been so busy with a variety of things going on in my life at the moment, and a lot of it is actually to do with a student-run business that I helped start in my Real Business Experience (RBE) course. Our business is known as the Butler Bed Buddy, and we sell a pillow / stuffed animal that is modeled after Butler Blue II. This is what our product looks like thus far:

The Butler Bed Buddy!

The course is modeled for the university’s College of Business to loan students money to help start a business, with the goal of being able to pay off the loan & make a profit by the end of the semester. Our team has been able so far this semester to outsource our product to a manufacturer in China, build an entire website on our own, get licensing through the university to use an appropriate logo, and also more approvals to sell in certain areas on campus as well. It has taken a lot of effort, time, and work, but it’s definitely worth-while. This class has been the most hands-on class I’ve ever had, and I’ve enjoyed every aspect of it so far.

What the actual Butler Bed Buddy will look like.

The best part of the business thus far has been being able to provide a unique product to alumni, students, and families all across the United States. We’re currently selling the Butler Bed Buddy for 25$, and you can view our website above to see more information. The Butler Bed Buddy will also look like the image to the left – we were in between whether or not we were going to use the “B” or use the logo, but we got licensing to use the logo approved and that’s what we’re using. I’m going to blog about the class & business more throughout the semester, but if you’d like to follow up with us more you should like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for constant updates on our business! More to come soon!
