About Me:

Hey, I'm Austin, and I'm currently a freshman here at Butler! I'm an ENTJ, a travel junkie, and an entrepreneur. I'm an Alpha Kappa Psi brother & True Blue Mentor, as well as being a part of Entrepreneurship & Innovation club, the volunteer center, and a student production crew member at the brand new Schrott Center. I also am a part of the student-run business, the Butler Bed Buddy. I'm always looking for something to get involved with on campus as well. Go Dawgs!

Family Birthdays

Since this is my first year away from home at college, of course it is normal for my family to get together more than they usually would if I were home. Let me explain this – my mom, my mom’s fiance, and my younger sister all live in Tennessee, and both of my older sisters live in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. It’s been hard being away at school because due to all of us having incredibly busy lives and living in three different states, we haven’t all been together as once, well, since I believe Christmas of 2011. It gets hard for me personally at times, but it is just going to make the next time we all get together even more worth it!

My family at Abuelo's!

My family at Abuelo's! I miss them!

My family got together yesterday in Chattanooga (which is the halfway point for my mom and my sisters to meet) for my older sister Jena’s birthday. She turned 25, and everyone except for myself was able to attend her birthday dinner at Abuelo’s . While my mom did attempt to FaceTime me while the family was at dinner, I was actually asleep and didn’t answer! It was sad, but I am hoping that we can all at least be together at some point next week for dinner perhaps. Anything, really, I just miss being with all of them at once, but I will at least get to see all of them next week (whether it is all together or separate) next week when I go home for spring break, and then go to stay with my sisters for a few days! Needless to say, I’m beyond excited to see all of them and my dad as well next week!

FF: Spring Break

In my last blog post, I talked about how I joined the ZipCar program on Butler’s campus, and it’s honestly been the best choice I’ve made since deciding to come here. Today I made a trip to Cincinnati with my friend Emily to pick up one of my friends from home. We started our trip at 7AM, and it ended back at Butler around 11AM. It was a really fast trip, really, and it’s the longest distance I’ve ever drove in one setting, but it was fun!

This entire program has gotten me really excited for my spring break, which actually starts on my birthday (March 8th)! Although I’m not leaving on the 8th, my friend Emily and I are heading to either Washington D.C. or to New York City, and if we do make it to the “Big Apple,” we’re hopefully going to see the Atlantic 10 Championship in Brooklyn. I’m incredibly excited for Spring Break in general, though, because I just love travelling all together.

Speaking of my best friends, here's a picture of Emily, Nicole, and I from an ugly sweater party we attended!

A Very J. Crew Christmas

Well, well, well….the holiday season is upon us and today was my first day back at my summer/seasonal job back home at J. Crew! It was hectic, per usual, due to a good sale we were having (and I’m not just saying that) and all of the customers finishing up last-minute Christmas shopping.

I enjoy working at J. Crew not only because I get to help people buy awesome clothes, but I also get a discount on those awesome clothes! I get 30% off both at retail stores and factory stores as well. Most of the clothes I wear are from J. Crew, and I really wouldn’t have it any other way just because the clothes are really great and not a bad price with my discount!

Here’s one of my favorite songs from the band Discovery, which consists of both Rostam Batmanglij from Vampire Weekend and Wesley Miles from Ra Ra Riot. Personally, I think Discovery is better than both Vampire Weekend & Ra Ra Riot, but both members got really busy with both bands so there hasn’t been any new music released for quite some time….it’s quite disappointing.

DONE DONE DONE DONE….DONE!

Well, well, well….I’m DONE with my first semester of college! Hooray!

While this semester has been great, it’s also been incredibly busy. I’ve somehow managed to balance working 13 hours a week and taking 14 credit hours this semester. It really doesn’t sound like much, but having homework every night on top of working and class really wears on someone! Next semester will be interesting because I have 17 credit hours, but I’ll figure it out.

Today I’m going home! I’m so very excited, too! I’m flying to Atlanta and hanging out with one of my older sisters, and then taking to Megabus to Knoxville where my momma is gonna pick me up! I’m so excited to get back home, and I’ll be home for right at a month so it’ll be really nice!

Happy finals to those who still have them, and Happy Winter Break most of all! Here’s an appropriate song for how I currently feel. :)

Time to Panic

Okay, finals week is officially here…….and I’m freaking out. I stayed up until 5AM last night writing and perfecting my final FYS paper, and got up at 8:45 to go eat breakfast with my roommate before I turned my paper in at 9:30. Needless to say, I was exhausted afterwards. I did have a nice talk with my FYS professor from about 9:30 – 10:15, though, and that’s one of the many things I’ve found to really enjoy about being at Butler is the fact that I can just talk to my professors about anything, even things not related to class.

I did end up taking a “nap” from about 10:30AM to 2:30PM today…so I feel a little bit better. I’m studying for my 8AM business final that’s tomorrow, and I’m not really sure if I’m prepared for it or not…

Other than that, I have two finals on Wednesday, and then I am done for the semester. I fly home for the semester break on Thursday, the 14th, and classes don’t start back again until January 14th! I have an entire month off, which I’m not really used to whatsoever. It’ll be a nice break though, and I’m really excited for it! Hopefully I can just get through finals first..

And like the other bloggers said before, we did have our Christmas party on Sunday and it was a BLAST! We made a gingerbread house…and then ate it, of course!

Thanksgiving Break

Well, unfortunately, it is Saturday. Usually that’s not an unfortunate thing, but after being off campus and out of class all week it is unfortunate due to having to get back to campus tomorrow! It’s really bittersweet, because I’m glad to get back and only have two weeks before finals, but at the same time they’re going to be an incredibly hard two weeks. I can’t even begin to explain the amount of papers, projects, and reviews I have to do in the next three weeks. How I’ll get through the next few weeks is completely beyond me, but ready or not it’s about to begin!

This past week has been great. I spent a few days in Washington D.C. again, came home on Tuesday for the first time in over three months, visited all of my amazing family, and also ate a lot of amazing food. My mom’s birthday was coincidentally on Thanksgiving this year, so it was extra special! My favorite food by far was Pumpkin Pie; it’s the best. I did have to work on Black Friday from 8AM – 4PM at J. Crew, which was hard after shopping until 3AM that night but I managed. My best Black Friday deal was definitely buying a pair of Lucky jeans for only $11! It was great, but it’s time to get this show on the road!

Here’s a video that already has 1+ million views uploaded today of people fighting over deals last night at Black Friday. Thankfully I didn’t witness anything, though!

I guess you could call it an epiphany,

As I’m sitting here, listening to the conversations around me “Oh, you’re flying to Atlanta, too?” “Yeah, it’s just a connection though. I’m flying to Minneapolis.” “Oh! I’m connecting and then flying to Houston!” I can’t help but wonder – what caused this? How can I sit here in one place now, and then in two hours be sitting somewhere 600 miles away, only waiting to be 600 miles further away yet again? How did the world become this connected?

I do love this concept, though. I’ve been tossing around the idea of staying connected, and I can’t wait for my future – not necessarily that I want to rush the next few years of college, but for the fact that I love being connected and being a part of something bigger. I’ve recently decided that I do want to double major in International Business & Marketing, and this has been brought on by the thought of maintaining a network with the expanding global economy and society. The world is growing and changing, and I want to be a part of it on the front line. That sounds really cheesy, but I’ve always loved the idea of International Business.

What brought on this “epiphany” is the fact that I’m currently sitting in an airport – waiting for my AirTran flight back to Atlanta, and then further onto Washington D.C. You could say that I’m obsessed with the city, or with flying, but I can’t help it. It gives me such an adrenaline rush. I do plan on studying abroad with my International Business degree, but I also plan on doing the Semester in Washington program that Butler sponsors.

That’s all the time I have for now, but I actually will only be in D.C. only temporarily – until Tuesday – and then I’ll be home for Thanksgiving. It will be the first time I actually get to be home in over three months. Here’s a song appropriate to flying, but also what got me through to 6AM this morning when writing a paper. Enjoy, and Happy Thanksgiving!
