I’m Happppppyyyyyyyyy (DC Edition)

Besides being happy that I’m in the city in general, I’m also pretty happy that the weather is finally, and hopefully, getting better for good! Words cannot describe how much I hate this cold weather. Is it too hard to ask for 50s-60s weather for a couple weeks!?  It’s all I hope and dream for.

After looking up the music video for the song “Happy” by Pharrell, I happened to stumble across this DC music video version of it. The video is pretty cheesy but I like it because I recognize most of the neighborhoods and sites in it, which makes me at least know I know a lot of the city so far.

I’ll get to know even more of the sites when I go on more tours and see more monuments in the upcoming weeks as part of class. I can’t wait to see the Lincoln Memorial since we’ve extensively discussed it in class but I’m just excited to explore all of the history in the city in general.

Polar Life

I hate this winter with a passion. It has been too cold and too snowy to even enjoy it. Although I wouldn’t trade all the snow days I’ve had for the world, I’d still prefer for it to be warmer now considering we’re 2 weeks away from April.

In Chicago a bit ago they held the city’s annual Polar Plunge and I thought it would be appropriate to talk about since it’s still colder in D.C. My professor here told us that it was not only unusual for DC to get this much snow, but it’s even more unusual that it’s still this cold at this point in time. Strange!

In Chicago’s Polar Plunge, Jimmy Fallon took part this year and his reaction to the cold was priceless! He’s definitely my favorite late night host and it says a lot that he could even be funny in this instance, even though he wasn’t trying to be.

Pretending to be a Runner

I’ve been taking advantage of all the warm weather, and lack of snow, here in D.C. and one of the ways I’ve been trying to do that is by trying to go running. I can probably count on my hands how many times I’ve actually gone running in my entire life so it’s always a struggle when I actually pretend to be an active runner.

The great thing about D.C. is that when you go running, since it’s small enough, you usually pass by a lot of important buildings/monuments. I decided to go running by the National Mall and was able to get a really good/unobstructed view of the Washington Monument. It was so cool being at a site where so many historic events took place and casually running by it like it’s no big deal.

I was also able to pass by the Capitol building, which wasn’t all too exciting since I intern there every day. But, I was, however, able to pass by the Supreme Court building. It’s a beautiful building and once it gets warmer, I definitely want to go inside.

Animal Wednesday

As you may know from reading my blog, visiting the National Zoo has become like a weekly thing for me. The weather has been beautiful lately and was even in the sixties last week! I didn’t even have to wear a jacket and it’s February!

Since the weather permitted, I walked around the zoo for a bit just to get some fresh air and to wind down from a busy week. I finished up a big paper for my politics class so I was proud of myself and rewarded myself with some quality animal time.

Unfortunately, my little animal friends still haven’t inspired me enough to become a vegetarian but I’m going to Whole Foods later so who knows what kind of diet I’ll assume then! My favorite animal of choice for this visit was a slow turtle. I personally identified with him since I am a slow runner. But slow and steady always wins the race! I named him Cory after the main character in the show Boy Meets World because I just recently started rewatching it and I’ve been sucked in. It’s so good!

First Day of Work!

Today was my first day at my internship in the Capitol building and it was pretty exciting. It was a bit overwhelming meeting so many new people and getting so much information but overall it was such a fun experience. I felt so important being where the history happens.

So apparently the citizens of DC literally freak out even when there is hardly any snow and it’s quite entertaining. The city is only expecting to get 5 inches of snow and there is already talk that there might be a declared state of emergency. It’s pretty funny considering 5 inches of snow is considered child’s play for Indianapolis.

After my internship was over I walked outside and saw that not only was it snowing but the area was literally deserted. I had never seen it so empty! I would’ve tried to enjoy the serenity of it all but it was so cold and windy that I had to find shelter ASAP! Hopefully the weather is better tomorrow!

Annoying Snow

I’m not a big fan of snow and cold weather so I was in for a treat when the local weather man said there’d be a blizzard over the weekend followed by something he described as an “arctic blast” of cold air. I was jumping out of my seat in excitement….. More snow to shovel! The media have been going crazy talking about and analyzing the snow which has been entertaining to say the least.

Butler even announced that the university would be closed today because of the weather. Normally that news would make me ecstatic but considering there are no classes I was indifferent to it all. And to add salt to the wound, I found out that my high school was closed today even though we never got one when I was there! It’s like the world is taunting me with this weather! Ahh, I miss my childhood when I craved the snow!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! And Happy Holidays to those who don’t celebrate!

I guess it wasn’t a white Christmas this year, which I prefer because I hate the cold. It’s pretty early right now so I haven’t gotten to go downstairs and open presents and such but it’s coming and I can’t wait! I also haven’t gotten time to go through my contacts on my phone to text everyone Merry Christmas but I’ll get to that as well!

On another note, for some reason I just can’t get into Christmas music. I can’t explain it but I just can’t sing along to it. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Christmas season, just not the music. Well, I don’t really like holiday themed music in general. However, I do happen to enjoy one Christmas song and it is “All I Want For Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey. It’s probably everyone’s favorite Christmas song and it happens to be mine too.

Rest Day

So I’ve been studying for different tests and assignments for the past couple of weeks and I decided to give myself a break today. I had a Spanish presentation today so I thought I deserved a nice little break from all my homework and assignments. So after my last class today, I came back to my room and took a nice long nap. Plus it was snowing outside so I was nice and warm in my bed.

Now, for the past hour or so I’ve been laying in bed, listening to classical music, and drinking tea. Needless to say, I feel classy. I might go to Whole Foods tomorrow and pick up more tea since I’m running low and I’m trying to taper off drinking coffee. Here’s the classical music mix I’ve been listening to in order to relax:

Snow Galore

So last night and all this morning, it was snowing extremely hard. There was even the promise of 6-10 inches of snow so of course I got my hopes up that there would be no classes today. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when there were in fact classes today with no delay! So I had to come back down to earth and actually get prepared for class!

I happened to go to my car since I have to drive to my internship when I saw that literally more snow than in all of Alaska was on my car so I spent a good 20 minutes cleaning it off! Needless to say my hands were freezing afterwards and my feet were soaking wet. The only good thing that came out of it was the great view I got from my internship of all the snow when I was finally inside. We get a perfect view of the state capitol building from our office so it was definitely a nice view.

True Life: I’m Addicted to Whole Foods

Lately the weather has been a little crappy and I haven’t liked it one bit. Not only has it been awkwardly cold, it has also been rainy, snowy, drizzly, and just about any other weather term ending in “-y.” That being said, I keep treating every possible bad weather alert like an approaching apocalypse and, in my crazy mind, have been hoarding food in my room.

Now whenever I get a winter weather warning on my phone, I use it as an excuse to go to Whole Foods. Hey, you can’t take any chances when there’s snow on the way because you never know if you’ll get snowed in and can’t get to food! I’ve stocked up on water, tortilla chips, honey, pomegranates, and, my newest obsession, Voss water. Voss is water from Norway so it makes me feel pretentious when I drink it. So, yes, this is the current state of my life, hoarding Norwegian water.

One of my residents and me rocking our Voss water!
