I Am Picasso

This past weekend I had to work on my Spanish final project with my group. We decided to use our project to highlight the issue of violence, specifically in Chile in the 1970s. None of us are artists in the slightest but we somehow managed to make our paintings look slightly recognizable.

The pictures deal with the kidnapping of innocent people, the holding of political prisoners, and the glimmer of hope for people during the time. This has been the focus lately in my Mysterious Stories Spanish course and it has definitely been interesting since I have previously talked about the same subject matter in some of my Political Science courses. Hopefully we get a good grade!

Music Monday: Earth Day

Today is Earth Day, peeps! So to celebrate, go out and recycle, plant a flower, or anything to show appreciation for Mother Earth. I personally have a love/hate relationship for Mother Earth depending on the weather but ultimately she and I are homies so I’ll make sure I do something special for her.

Today’s Music Monday is dedicated to Jack Johnson. Besides being a musician, he also actively campaigns for Save the Earth initiatives such as keeping beaches clean and for climate change. His “You and Your Heart” music video features a lot of nature images and truly showcases how beautiful the world can be if we take good care of it.

RA of the Universe

So last week at our weekly RA staff meeting, I was bestowed with the honors of being RA of the Week and RA of the Month. So, basically, this makes me RA of the universe. To celebrate my new reign, I decided to get snacks and drinks for my residents and held an impromptu event in my room.

Since I’m now royalty, I decided to treat myself to caviar from Whole Foods. I was expecting it to taste bitter and terrible but it was actually quite delicious. So I spent all Friday night doing homework, listening to Lana Del Rey, and eating caviar. If that’s not luxurious, I don’t know what is.

Shine Bright Like A Theta

So last week one of my residents, Aly, invited me to go to Theta formal with her and, being the upstanding gentleman that I am, I gladly obliged. She showed me what dress she was wearing so on Thursday I went to H&M with my pal Karleen to help me pick out an outfit. And even though we picked out clothes, I ended up wearing things I already had in my closet!

When I got to Theta, I was pleasantly surprised to see fellow blogger Bekah! ‘Twas a mini reunion! I knew she was a Theta but I forgot that she would be at formal so it was a great surprise. I also got to see all my other friends in the house and from my classes. I had the bad idea of thinking I was somehow going to finish my homework when I got back to campus but I ended up just going to bed and now waking up at a weird hour. But I ended up having a great time!

Bekah, me and our dates to formal!

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter everyone!

I hope everyone had a great Easter! I was able to go home this weekend to see my family and go to church! It was so nice to go home and relax and see my family. We got to go out and eat and even watch a movie together.

When I got back to campus I got to campus, my friend Karleen and Brandon all went to her house to finish the Easter festivities. Her mom cooked a glorious meal and needless to say, I’ve eaten cheesecake galore. Her family also participated in an Easter egg toss competition. If I were playing I would have won but Karleen’s older sister Kelly ended up winning. We ended the day visiting her friend Allie’s house and now I’m back on campus after a fun day doing homework. :(

Twas fun while it lasted!

Snow Galore

So last night and all this morning, it was snowing extremely hard. There was even the promise of 6-10 inches of snow so of course I got my hopes up that there would be no classes today. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when there were in fact classes today with no delay! So I had to come back down to earth and actually get prepared for class!

I happened to go to my car since I have to drive to my internship when I saw that literally more snow than in all of Alaska was on my car so I spent a good 20 minutes cleaning it off! Needless to say my hands were freezing afterwards and my feet were soaking wet. The only good thing that came out of it was the great view I got from my internship of all the snow when I was finally inside. We get a perfect view of the state capitol building from our office so it was definitely a nice view.

Golden Globes

The Golden Globes were held on Sunday this year and, while I was getting ready for my first day of classes, I decided to watch them! The show was hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler which made me more inclined to watch this year because I find them hilarious. Their opening monologue was extremely funny and I’m glad they didn’t just rip the attendees like Ricky Gervais did in the past.

My favorite part was when Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell did their little bit while presenting the nominees for their category. I’m surprised I liked it because although I love Kristen Wiig, I usually don’t find Will Ferrell funny but I was impressed. Evidently their bit was done on the spot so bravo for them thinking of it right then and it still being funny!

Music Monday: Up and About

Today is the first day of classes which is exciting! I only have one class today so I don’t feel stressed or anything and that’s actually good since it’ll get me adjusted to having to go back to classes already! I have Peace Studies today and I’m super excited for it since I’ve never taken a Peace Studies course before so I’m curious as to what to expect. I have a friend that took the course before and loved it so I’m hoping to have a similar experience!

I also start my internship at the state Democratic Party today as well. I’m also excited to see what I’ll be doing, meting my co-workers, and getting real world experience. It’s also a busy day for me as well because I am on duty in my building today and I have a unit meeting for my residents tonight! So I’ll definitely have a lot of running around to be doing!

Obstacle Course

On one of the last days of RA training, Reslife set up an obstacle course in the HRC for us. We were divided into teams and our team decided to call ourselves Team Hope. FOr about an hour we did various activities such as skipping around the track, cycling, running up and down stairs, and running in the gym. All the events took about an hour.

After the obstacle course we all did a group yoga session in the HRC basement. It was a great way to relax and unwind after all the running of before. It was especially pleasing since it was the first time all year I had done physical activity of any kind besides dancing around my room and it was nice to finally be able to sit down and reflect on how out of shape I am. Our team ended up getting third place but, in our defense, one of the other teams had a Physical education major!

Gleaners Food Bank

Yesterday, during RA training, us RAs volunteered at Gleaners Food Bank. It was so nice for all of us to come together and work toward a good cause. When we first arrived we watched a video about the work we would be doing and the impact we will be making in the community. After that we broke off into groups to work on a different project. Some people went to the meat packing section in the freezer and some went to sort the food. My group was assigned to placing the food on the counter to be sorted.

In total we all helped produce a total of 8,600 pounds of food for needy families and children. It felt good that I helped contribute to that total and hopefully we’ll be able to return in the future. All this week during training we have been emphasizing on charity and giving back to the community, which I think is a very good trait to have as a person and being a contributing member of society.
