Lions and Tigers and Bears (Oh My!)

I’ve been going to the National Zoo on about a weekly basis now since it’s so close to my apartment. During my last visit, all the animals were out and it was wonderful! I got to go inside the reptile exhibit, the small mammal exhibit, and see the large monkeys!

The lion and tiger were also out in full force too! The lion was jumping around and roaring and stuff stuff so it was hard to get a good pic of him but I managed to snap one. The tiger was just strutting his stuff and not really paying anyone any attention.

I actually did, in fact, see a bear but he was just being lazy and laying around so I couldn’t get a good picture of him. Next time I visit, I’m going to need him to be a bit more active.

Cute Puppies Galore!

One of the early things I noticed when I first came to D.C. was that there is an abundance of adorable puppies around! I’ve been craving a pet so they’ve basically been taunting me everywhere I go. I’ve been spending a lot of time in Starbucks lately being pretentious studying and for some reason everyone has been bringing their puppies there so I’ve been on puppy watch almost every day.

Sometimes people bring ugly dogs but lately all of them have been cute. I haven’t seen anyone with my favorite dog breed, dalmatians, yet but I have seen my second favorite, siberian huskies!

One of these days I’m going to have to sneak some kind of pet into my apartment. It probably won’t be a puppy but will probably end up being a boring beta fish since they’re cheap lovable.

Selfie Sunday: My Man McCain

So let me cut to the chase and get to the meat of the story: I rode an elevator with John McCain and I asked him to take an awkward selfie with me! Now I’ll tell you the story of how it happened!

It all started when I had to run an errand in the Capitol. I successfully made it to my destination but considering there are 7 office buildings in the Capitol, on my way back I got lost. I thought I was on the right Capitol train back to my office building and out of the corner of my eye I see John McCain get on the train two cars in front of me!

I got really excited and then realized I was going to the wrong office building! I get off the train and try to find my way back and I look toward the elevator and see John McCain waiting to go up! I didn’t actually need to get on the elevator but I waited just to be near him. He then gets on the elevator and held the door for me! We even made awkward elevator talk about what school I went to! There was another person in the elevator too but they’re irrelevant!

As he was leaving the elevator I took advantage of the opportunity and asked for a picture. He quickly took a selfie for me and I fled the scene like a giddy schoolgirl. So that’s the story of how I met John McCain. He’s probably the most famous person I’ve met so far considering he was almost President. Hopefully I can meet more cool people in D.C. as well!

Zoo Living

One of the greatest parts of the Butler D.C. program is that the residence is literally a 5 minute walk to the National Zoo! An even greater perk is that entrance into the zoo is free! You can literally walk around at any hour you like for absolutely free! Needless to say, I’ve been multiple times.

Last week, after working on assignments in the library by my apartment, I decided to check out the zoo on my way back. It was a bit chilly but that didn’t stop me! I grabbed some Starbucks and checked it out! One of the first little furry animals I saw was a little red fox chewing on some leaves. It was extremely precious. I slightly debated stealing it!

This red fox was begging me to take it home with me!

After I made friends with the fox, I ventured over to the new panda exhibit. There’s a new baby panda at the zoo named Bao Bao and I was the first of my D.C. friends to see her! She was strutting her stuff with her mom and I had to fight my way to the front of the crowd to see her! It was definitely a successful visit!

Throwback Tuesday: Iwo Jima

Last weekend us Butler interns went on a tour of D.C. and one of the first stops we made was to the Iwo Jima memorial. It is right next to the Arlington National Cemetary and it honors all of our nation’s marines. One of the cool aspects of the memorial is that when you walk around it, it appears as though the soldiers are lifting the flag upright.

From the memorial you can see the U.S. Capitol Building and the Washington Monument. It’s definitely a beautiful sight to see. Also near the monument are other monuments from other countries thanking the United States for their involvement in World War 2. One includes a really cool monument donated by The Netherlands to the U.S.

There are so many other awesome monuments in the city and I want to take the opportunity to try to see most of them! Hopefully I can find the time!

Meeting A Quarterback

Last week during my internship, they were holding a health fair and in order to entice people to attend, the Washington Redskins Quarterback Kirk Cousins was there! I’m not much of a football aficionado, even though I can pretend to care when I have to, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet a pro NFL player even though I didn’t really know him. I waited in line for about 25 minutes but I eventually got close enough and got a picture with him.

After he took a picture with me, he then signed one of the magazines they were handing out. He was extremely nice while meeting me and was pretty tall. Now that I’ve met him, I’m sure my sports prowess will rub off on him and the Redskins will win the Super Bowl next year.

In the heat of meeting him, I totally forgot that there was a health fair going on! So even though I didn’t get a flu shot like the event intended, I was able to spin a wheel and won a mood ring. In case you were wondering, when I put it on it said I was depressed…… Awkward…….

First Day of Work!

Today was my first day at my internship in the Capitol building and it was pretty exciting. It was a bit overwhelming meeting so many new people and getting so much information but overall it was such a fun experience. I felt so important being where the history happens.

So apparently the citizens of DC literally freak out even when there is hardly any snow and it’s quite entertaining. The city is only expecting to get 5 inches of snow and there is already talk that there might be a declared state of emergency. It’s pretty funny considering 5 inches of snow is considered child’s play for Indianapolis.

After my internship was over I walked outside and saw that not only was it snowing but the area was literally deserted. I had never seen it so empty! I would’ve tried to enjoy the serenity of it all but it was so cold and windy that I had to find shelter ASAP! Hopefully the weather is better tomorrow!

Tour of DC

Today our internship coordinator/teacher Ivo took all of us Butler interns out to see the city. It was a 5 hour tour but we definitely saw a lot! We first got to see a lot of the neighborhood we currently live in and got to see all of the grocery stores and shops around us that are cheap and good to visit.

We also got to see where each intern is going to be working during the semester and also other sites in the city. One of the first major stops we made was to the Iwo Jima memorial and learned about the history of it.

The final stop we made was to the White House! It was great seeing my future home up close and personal. ;) And in good ole André fashion, I twerked in front of it. What better way to celebrate being at the White House than doing some good old fashioned Americana twerking!?

Moved In!

Yesterday I officially moved into my room in DC! I started the day by waking up at 4 AM, yes 4, and going to the bus station. Then I rode the bus to the airport and waited until my flight left. While in the airport I got a breakfast sandwich from Potbelly’s that was delicious.

After the plane ride and waiting for my luggage, I noticed that a girl was wearing a Butler shirt near me. I approached her and it turns out she’s here for the internship program too! So we ended up catching a taxi together to our apartments since we live in the same building and luckily got to split the cost.

I was the last of my roommates to arrive but I’ve yet to meet them but I’m excited to nonetheless. Now my main focus is figuring out how to navigate the city! I forgot a ton of stuff at home so I’ve been trying to find my way around to a Target. I’ve only found my way to a CVS so far but I’m still hunting. Wish me luck!

Late Packing

I leave for D.C. in less than 24 hours and in regular André fashion, I haven’t started packing yet. It hasn’t hit me yet that I’ll be living there for the next few months. I guess it’ll probably seem real once I’m there. I don’t even know who I’m living with yet so that’ll be fun meeting my roommates for the first time!

I’ve already downloaded a D.C. metro app already for my trip. Everyone who has gone before claims it’s oh so easy to navigate but I’ll believe it when I see it. The app is tailored so it tells you where to go based on your location and it has gotten rave reviews so I’m sure it’ll work its way out once I’m there.

I hate to cut this blog short but I have to get started packing…. It’s hard figuring out which clothes I’m bringing with me immediately and which clothes I plan on having mailed to me in a week. It’s hard because I want to bring everything!

The totality of my packing so far..... Not very much....
