Today’s Music Monday is dedicated to the song “Chillin” by Wale featuring Lady Gaga. Since I’m in D.C. this semester, I’ve been trying to expand my musical selection to artists from the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area. The funny thing about this music video is that a lot of scenes are places I’ve visited or seen while here so it’s nice that I’m already starting to recognize things despite only having been here a week!
Yesterday I got to see a ton of sights as I went with my roommates shopping around the city in Georgetown. We went to a ton of stores but I ended up only getting something from Ralph Lauren. The great thing about having roommates that are from the area is that they know where everything is!
The only downside to yesterday was the cold and the fact that there was construction on the subway so it made every trip ten times as long. Fortunately for us, we just so happened to catch the subway right when it was approaching so it ended up working out!
Today was my first day at my internship in the Capitol building and it was pretty exciting. It was a bit overwhelming meeting so many new people and getting so much information but overall it was such a fun experience. I felt so important being where the history happens.
So apparently the citizens of DC literally freak out even when there is hardly any snow and it’s quite entertaining. The city is only expecting to get 5 inches of snow and there is already talk that there might be a declared state of emergency. It’s pretty funny considering 5 inches of snow is considered child’s play for Indianapolis.
After my internship was over I walked outside and saw that not only was it snowing but the area was literally deserted. I had never seen it so empty! I would’ve tried to enjoy the serenity of it all but it was so cold and windy that I had to find shelter ASAP! Hopefully the weather is better tomorrow!
The day before the storm
This winter break I’ve invested in Netflix, as I’ve previously discussed. It has saved me from extreme boredom and has been entertaining me as I continue to fill out law school applications during break. Unlike all my friends, I don’t move into my apartment in D.C. until next week. The abundance of movies and tv shows at my fingertips is astounding!
The newest show I’ve gotten into is Orange Is The New Black. It’s a show about a woman, Piper, who gets thrown in prison after a crime she committed like 15 years ago. She’s not what a viewer would consider the typical jail type which adds to the humor. It’s a dark comedy so while being funny it also has more serious elements at times. The show also goes into the backstories of various inmates as well. It gets risqué at times so it might not be for everyone.
I have gotten so addicted to it that I’ve gotten through the whole season in two days. The second season is supposed to be premiering on Netflix sometime this year so I’m excited for it to get started back up again! Ellen Degeneres did a funny skit involving a scene on the show fairly recently that I enjoyed:
I decided to make a post today discussing some of the reasons why I decided to come to Butler. I originally heard of Butler because of its successful basketball program and did a little research on it and ended up deciding to come! I’ve always gone to small private schools my whole life so seeing that Butler only had a couple thousand students was really appealing to me. Another good thing about Butler for me was that it’s still in a big city so there’s always stuff to do and always plenty of opportunities to get involved or find employment.
Overall, coming to Butler has probably been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made not only because of all the awesome people I’ve met, but also because of the knowledge I’ve gained and opportunities I’ve been part of that I would have never had if I had gone to another school.
I’m not a big fan of snow and cold weather so I was in for a treat when the local weather man said there’d be a blizzard over the weekend followed by something he described as an “arctic blast” of cold air. I was jumping out of my seat in excitement….. More snow to shovel! The media have been going crazy talking about and analyzing the snow which has been entertaining to say the least.
Butler even announced that the university would be closed today because of the weather. Normally that news would make me ecstatic but considering there are no classes I was indifferent to it all. And to add salt to the wound, I found out that my high school was closed today even though we never got one when I was there! It’s like the world is taunting me with this weather! Ahh, I miss my childhood when I craved the snow!
Happy New Year! First blog post of the year!
It’s so weird thinking about entering a new year! I didn’t get to know 2013 for all that long! My biggest struggle this year will be remembering to write 2014 on everything instead of 2013. Heck, I was still writing 2012 on things in December of 2013! Instead of going out on New Year’s, I just laid in bed reading. Sure it’s a nerdy way to ring in the New Year but it was relaxing nonetheless.
While watching the news I saw that Dubai set the record for World’s Largest Firework Display on New Years. I’ve always wanted to visit Dubai and I’m sure it would’ve been quite a sight to see in person. I’m not usually a fireworks person but I would’ve made an exception this time.
It all started a couple months ago when Atherton Dining Hall started replacing its hot sauce with Siracha sauce. I reluctantly tried it and instantly fell in love. It had such a spice I never tasted before and it soon became my newest obsession. I started putting it on all my food! Heck, if I could put it in my water I could but don’t worry I haven’t gone that far yet. According to the Huffington Post, it’s the newest trend in healthy eating sauces so it looks like I’m on to something. Who knew Atherton would get me obsessed with something!?
Speaking of new obsessions, so I’ve previously chronicled how I’m a hipster now and one of the ways I’ve been doing it is by reading the website Pitchfork. Pitchfork is a snooty website that reviews new independent music and is like every hipster’s Bible and I love it. I read it every day for new hipster music news and reviews just to feel pretentious when I like the music they like. So basically this break, for me, has been full of nothing but Siracha and Pitchfork.
The Siracha sauce I bought the other day! Delicious!
Merry Christmas! And Happy Holidays to those who don’t celebrate!
I guess it wasn’t a white Christmas this year,
which I prefer because I hate the cold. It’s pretty early right now so I haven’t gotten to go downstairs and open presents and such but it’s coming and I can’t wait! I also haven’t gotten time to go through my contacts on my phone to text everyone Merry Christmas but I’ll get to that as well!
On another note, for some reason I just can’t get into Christmas music. I can’t explain it but I just can’t sing along to it. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Christmas season, just not the music. Well, I don’t really like holiday themed music in general. However, I do happen to enjoy one Christmas song and it is “All I Want For Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey. It’s probably everyone’s favorite Christmas song and it happens to be mine too.
Now that I have time to relax on break instead of being busy during the semester, I’ve decided to invest in a good book and Netflix. The first show I decided to watch once I got Netflix was House of Cards. It’s about a Congressman who works the political system to do things for his own benefit and to get his way. I started watching it since I’m going to be living in D.C. next semester so it got me excited to start living there. It’s not an edge of your seat drama but it’s more of a “How will he get out if this one?”
While I wait on the second season to come out in February, I’ve decided to start watching the show Sherlock. It’s a modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes and comes at an appropriate time since I’ve begun reading a collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories. It sounds nerdy, I know, but it makes me feel pretentious.
