Hometown Tour

As part of my internship, I am able to give tours to visitors to the office/Capitol and recently I was able to give a tour to a group of students from my local middle school/future attendees of my high school. Some of the kids in the group were even younger siblings of friends I graduated with! It definitely showed me truly how small of a world Earth really is.

I got my group of students and parents, many of whom also went to my high school, and we went through the Capitol Visitor Center and began our tour! We got to see all of the cool rooms and I got to inform them of all of the history of the different parts of the Capitol.

When the tour ended, we all got to catch up and they were able to reunite with the larger group and they all went off to see the rest of DC. It was a nice taste of home seeing them and definitely eased my homesickness!

Veterans Event

Last week, there was an event on the National Mall honoring all of our veterans that died of suicide as a result of their duty. About 1,892 flags were planted and I got to see all of the volunteers as they were finishing putting the flags on the ground.

I thought it was a great thing to witness and also call attention to. It was so great that they were able to put the flags in front of the Washington monument, a site with so many historic events. The weather was also nicer yesterday so it was perfect timing for the event. I’ve also believed making sure our veterans are being taken care of should be one of the highest priorities our country has.

I was able to go see all of it during my lunch break and I’m so glad I did. There was even an info booth so I could find out more information about the issue and also the group that was sponsoring it.

The Dalmatian Saga Continues

My obsession with Dalmatians has reached new heights. After watching 101 Dalmatians yesterday, I’ve spent all of my free time watching Dalmatian puppy videos on Youtube. Sure I could be spending that free time on more important things, but I’d rather just watch cute puppies. This video is one of my favorites.

This newly discovered  puppy love (I’m the master of puns) all stemmed from a puppy video I saw on the Huffington Post. Clearly Dalmatians and their pretentious spots are the cutest dog breed and anyone who says otherwise is just jealous.

I mean, just look at this.

Most importantly, Dalmatians are smarter than your favorite dog breed and can do anything they can do, but better and while looking better with their pretentious spots. Does your favorite non-Dalmatian breed have cool pretentious spots? Didn’t think so.

Music Monday: Because I’m Waggyyyyy

I was browsing the Huffington Post last week and I found the best video ever. I’ve previously documented how much I like the song Happy by Pharrell so you should’ve seen the face of happiness (get it?) I had when I saw that someone made a puppy version of it!

My favorite type of dogs/puppies have to, hands down, be Dalmatians. I deeply admire how pretentious they are and the fact that their spots add character to an otherwise boring breed. But the fact that they possess spots changes everything!

Now I’ve been inspired to rewatch 101 Dalmatians since I don’t remember paying it much attention as a kid. But while I do that, enjoy this puppy music video.

Visit to the National Cathedral

While in DC, along with my weekly one day a week class, I also have three weekend seminars on various different topics. This past weekend was the first seminar and it was about how Religion and Politics affect each other in America with a guest professor.

One day we got to walk to the National Cathedral to take a tour and try to figure out the political elements involved. We all visited it on our first weekend here but didn’t get to take a tour so it was much more powerful this time seeing the history behind the building.

The building itself is so beautiful and full of grand architecture and statues. It’s kind of overwhelming at first to be struck by just how beautiful and colossal the building it.

We were also able to visit the Mormon Temple and find out more about the Mormon faith as well. It was a cool experience seeing a faith up close that I did not have a lot of knowledge of beforehand and how they fit within the discourse of politics, especially in relation to the 2012 election.

I’m Happppppyyyyyyyyy (DC Edition)

Besides being happy that I’m in the city in general, I’m also pretty happy that the weather is finally, and hopefully, getting better for good! Words cannot describe how much I hate this cold weather. Is it too hard to ask for 50s-60s weather for a couple weeks!?  It’s all I hope and dream for.

After looking up the music video for the song “Happy” by Pharrell, I happened to stumble across this DC music video version of it. The video is pretty cheesy but I like it because I recognize most of the neighborhoods and sites in it, which makes me at least know I know a lot of the city so far.

I’ll get to know even more of the sites when I go on more tours and see more monuments in the upcoming weeks as part of class. I can’t wait to see the Lincoln Memorial since we’ve extensively discussed it in class but I’m just excited to explore all of the history in the city in general.

Music Monday: Arctic Monkeys

As all my friends know, I’m extremely picky over my music choices. I even only have 5 artists on my iPod! One of them being the Arctic Monkeys. I only discovered them last year despite them being formed in 2002. Needless to say, as soon as I heard them, I loved it!

Their latest album, called AM, is my favorite of their albums. It’s very hip hop influenced, which I like, and is also really dark, which I also enjoy since it makes me feel edgy. Yes, I’m easily influenced into liking things if they make me feel edgy…. Don’t judge me!

They recently covered “Hold On, We’re Going Home” by Drake and I really enjoyed it. I thought they pulled it off well considering the song is a different genre but also put their own spin on it.

Here it is:

Polar Life

I hate this winter with a passion. It has been too cold and too snowy to even enjoy it. Although I wouldn’t trade all the snow days I’ve had for the world, I’d still prefer for it to be warmer now considering we’re 2 weeks away from April.

In Chicago a bit ago they held the city’s annual Polar Plunge and I thought it would be appropriate to talk about since it’s still colder in D.C. My professor here told us that it was not only unusual for DC to get this much snow, but it’s even more unusual that it’s still this cold at this point in time. Strange!

In Chicago’s Polar Plunge, Jimmy Fallon took part this year and his reaction to the cold was priceless! He’s definitely my favorite late night host and it says a lot that he could even be funny in this instance, even though he wasn’t trying to be.

US Botanical Garden

A couple weeks ago I was able to visit the US Botanical Garden and forgot to blog about it! It it literally right next to the Capitol and all of the Smithsonian museums so it’s pretty convenient to visit.

botanical1There are so many cool and exotic plants to see at the garden. It houses tons of plants from around the world at all times of the year. It’s a huge greenhouse and was pretty cool. It was also very warm inside for the plants so I even had to take off my jacket.

botanical2I would’ve stayed for a guided tour but since I saw so much in one day I was too tired to participate but maybe I’ll come back at another time to get the full experience. I’d recommend seeing it for anyone visiting D.C.

Late Oscars Recap

Usually I’m always up on watching all the awards shows and doing a recap of them but this year I’ve been slacking off. And that also means I didn’t watch the Oscars either (sorry!). But I did see/hear about all of the highlights!

I’m not much of a movie person which is probably why I wasn’t at all interested in watching. I do sometimes enjoy Ellen Degeneres but even she wasn’t enough to get me to be interested. Movies are always too long and I have a short attention span. I was, however amused by Ellen’s celebrity selfie! It even broke the record for most retweets on Twitter!

I had no idea Jared Leto was in a movie, let alone was a good enough actor to win an Oscar! That was definitely the most surprising moment for me. I enjoy his music in his band 30 Seconds to Mars. Other than that I awkwardly didn’t know the rest of the winners….. Maybe for next year I’ll be more caught up on cinema!

So, in closing, this wasn’t much of a recap. My apologies.

Here’s a funny red carpet video though
