Last week was the Jewish celebration of Yom Kippur and of course I had to participate. Two of my residents invited me to go with them and I quickly obliged. Jewish people usually fast for the holiday but I wasn’t that committed! Although I did eat two smaller meals instead of nice healthy ones like I usually do.
The synagogue we went too was very close to Butler. We got there very quickly and stayed there for two services. The first was a memorial and reflection service and the second one was one for repentance of sins. It was definitely a new experience hearing people speaking Hebrew. My favorite part was wearing the yamaka. It was a really fun and entertaining experience and hopefully I’ll be able to celebrate more things with them!

As everyone knows, the iPhone 5 came out last week. And needless to say, I pre ordered it the day it was released. It shipped all the way from China and took a couple days to get here but it shipped to my house yesterday. Of course no one was home to get it from UPS but don’t worry, it’s being shipped to Butler so I should have it by today!
The look of defeat when I saw I wasn't getting my phone yesterday!
Today all of my classes were canceled so I can wait all day for it! I can’t wait to get it. I’ve already given it a pretentious name just for the heck of it. His name is Jacques (Yes, he’s French) and I can tell he’s going to be cool. Can’t wait until mail delivers today!
Last week my faculty in residence at Resco invited everyone in our wing over for s’mores! I’ve only had one s’more previously so I was definitely excited to go truly experience s’mores for myself. They had a campfire set up for everyone to make their own s’mores. After struggling for some time, I eventually got the hang of it.
My international students in my hallway never had s’mores before so I ended up having to teach them how to make them. Evidently I burn them too much instead of making them a golden brown, but I’m getting better! I made myself two of them and they were absolutely delicious and messy! I can’t wait to have more!
If you look closely, you can see me helping a little boy blow out his marshmellows! André saves the day, again!
Yesterday, the weather was beautiful! It felt like a perfect fall day so of course I had to do something outside. My friend Karleen told me that her sorority, Theta, was having a Grill Off and an event at their house for charity of I decided to stop by to see what it was all about.
One of my residents took this picture of me at lip-syncs. I have no idea why I was creepily smiling like that....
I got there just in time for the lip-syncs and they were entertaining, to say the least. I loved all the performances but the one that stood out to me was the freshmen guys from Ross Hall. They had so many stunts and acrobatics in their performance, it was amazing. Needless to say, they won the event and it was just an enjoyable event.
Here’s a video of last year’s winning team at Theta lip-syncs:
Yesterday, I was minding my business in my room studying and doing homework, when I noticed some of my residents giggling in the study lounge next to my room. I didn’t think much of it until some of them walked by my room manically laughing. Then I knew something was up and realized that my Justin Bieber cardboard cutout was missing!
Justin looking traumatized after being kidnapped outside my window
After interrogating various residents and tackling a couple of people, I eventually narrowed it down to one resident who was the perpetrator. Then suddenly, one of my residents told me to look outside my window. Low and behold, Justin was outside my window! As I tried to open my window to get him back inside the safety of my room, he suddenly disappeared!
After some tough negotiating, the perpetrator, Alex, eventually brought Justin back. Justin was obviously traumatized by the whole experience but he was eventually brought back in one piece! Tonight I’m making my friend Karleen babysit him in her room tonight just to protect his safety! We cannot have a repeat of last night! I now am currently plotting my retaliation!
FINALLY getting Justin back!
Last week I was made aware of a new video making its rounds on the Internet by blogger Katie. It’s a Korean KPop video called “Gangnam Style” that is, to say the least, very strange. There’s even a dance that goes with it that basically looks like “ride the pony” but evidently there are steps that I am too lazy to learn.
But now, this video/song is an inescapable force! Not only is it on every news station, it is also on my favorite talk shows. For example, Britney Spears and Ellen DeGeneres danced to it on her show. It is even currently number one on iTunes. And, to top it all off, they are now starting to play it on the radio! It’s the new “Call Me Maybe.”
Everyone keeps teasing me saying how boring my room is since I only have like two posters and no rugs or anything. It was even described as a “cave” by one of my friends. So in an attempt to liven up my room a bit, I decided to browse the Party City website to find something exciting for my room.
The section that struck me was the cardboard cutout section. There were so many to choose from but I ultimately decided to get the Justin Bieber cutout. It was the best purchase decision of my life. The only downfall is that whenever my room is dark, I’m terrified that there is a person, but it’s just the Biebs! It’s like I have a roommate now!

The television show, The Price Is Right, is coming to Butler next month and I’m really excited! I, unfortunately, couldn’t get tickets but I am still excited to watch it on television and see people I know. It is going to be held in Clowes so it is literally right on campus. Hopefully someone I know wins an extravagant prize and shares it with me!
I really hope Bob Barker, even though he isn’t the host anymore, makes a surprise guest appearance. But I’m still excited for Drew Carrey to be on campus. It’ll just be an exciting day, I’m sure. Have fun to everyone who could get tickets!
It is so hard to believe that it has been 11 years since 9/11. It is definitely humbling experience thinking that could have happened to anyone and anywhere. I was in fourth grade when the attacks happened and I can vividly remember watching it on television in class and not clearly understanding what exactly was happening. It is very interesting to see how much has changed since then and how the attacks those days are still relevant in today’s discourse.
I think today is always a good day to reflect on all the lives that were lost that day and to see how united that event made our country. Many people on Facebook have been posting messages and statuses about it so it is definitely hard to not take some time to think about it.
I went home this weekend and it was a wonderful time back. I didn’t do much of anything other than homework and laundry but it was definitely relaxing. I also was able to watch Star Trek, which is one of my favorite movies. The only bad part was that it was non stop raining and cold but it was still a nice relief.
Driving back to Butler!
Also, the NFL season has commenced and, needless to say, I’m leading my fantasy league. This is slightly shocking to me since I picked random players and people based on whose name I liked the most. But I’m sure my streak will be ending soon but hey, it was fun while it lasted!
