College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences!
We are delighted that you are joining Butler University and our college in particular. Below you will find some information specific to registration as a student in Liberal Arts and Sciences. We hope this information will help you in preparing for your academic advising appointment. Please also visit the Prepare for Advising website for important general advice.
Placement Exams and the Foreign Language Requirement
All Liberal Arts and Sciences students are required to take a foreign language. You may choose to continue in a language you have taken in high school or start from the beginning in a new language. If you plan to enroll in a language that you have already studied, you will need to complete a placement exam before you attend New Student Registration. If you plan to begin a new language, a placement exam is not required.
Core Curriculum - Areas of Inquiry
The Core Curriculum includes six Areas of Inquiry that focus on distinct areas of study. They are designed to add breadth to the Butler liberal arts education. When preparing for registration, you should investigate courses in each of these areas. Depending on your major, you are exempt from the Area of Inquiry that includes that area of study since you will already be taking classes in that area through your major. Below you will find the Area of Inquiry exemptions for each major offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For more information about a specific major, click below to be directed to the department's website.
