Merit and Talent Awards for Prospective Freshmen
Freshman Academic Scholarships
To Apply: Complete the Application for Freshman Admission and Scholarships (or Common Application).
Application Date: Nov. 1 (complete date) to
receive maximum consideration.
*Complete applications for admission received after Nov.
1 will be considered for scholarships based on available funds
and the quality of the application pool.
Selection Criteria: Awards are based on the student's academic record-SAT and/or ACT scores, class rank, high school curriculum and extracurricular involvement at the time of admission.
Notification: Offers of a Freshman Academic Scholarship are sent under separate cover from the Office of Financial Aid approximately 3 weeks after notification of admission to Butler University.
Renewable? Yes. As long as the student upholds the academic standards outlined in the scholarship offer.
Notes: National Merit semi-finalists and National Achievement semi-finalists are guaranteed a minimum award. National Merit finalists who designate Butler University as their sponsor are eligible for an additional award from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation that ranges from $750 to $1,000. Transfer students with fewer than 24 hours of college credit may be considered for this scholarship.
Departmental Awards
To Apply: Complete the Application for Freshman Admission and Scholarships (or Common Application).
Application Date: Nov. 1 (completion date).
Selection Criteria: Academic strength and intended major in one of the following:
- College of Business
- College of Communication
- College of Education
- College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
- Exploratory Studies
- Engineering Dual Degree Program
- Pre-law and Pre-med Programs
Notification: The Departmental award letters are sent from the Office of Financial Aid by mid-March.
Renewable? Yes. As long as the student upholds the academic standards outlined in the scholarship offer.
Athletic Grants-in-Aid (Athletic Scholarship)
To Apply: Contact the Department of Athletics at (800) 368-6852, extension 9375 or check out their website, www.butlersports.com
Award Amounts: Varies depending on the athletic program.
Selection Criteria: Athletic ability as determined by the coach.
Notes: Awards are made in thirteen NCAA Division I athletic programs. Men's football, men and women's track and field and women's swimming are non-scholarship programs.
Jordan College of Fine Arts Audition Awards
To Apply: In addition to the Application for Freshman Admission and Scholarships (or Common Application), the JCFA supplemental application and an audition (or interview) are required for art + design, arts administration, dance, music and theatre. Check out the JCFA website for audition dates or to submit the JCFA supplemental application.
Award Amounts: Varies depending on the student's intended primary major. Students are encouraged to apply for admission and audition early.
Selection Criteria: Performance ability and program needs as determined by the department.
Notification: Audition Award letters are sent from the auditioning department by mid-March.
Notes: Awards are made to students who intend on majoring in the Jordan College of Fine Arts - dance, music, theatre and arts administration.
Dr. John Morton-Finney Leadership Program
The Dr. John Morton-Finney Leadership Program is designed to provide leadership development to all individuals who are interested in increasing the awareness of diversity issues in our society.
To Apply: Complete the Application for Freshman Admission and Scholarships (or Common Application).
Application Date: Nov. 1 (completion date).
Selection Criteria: In addition to academic strength as indicated by class rank, GPA and SAT/ACT scores, applicants must demonstrate commitment and actions to promote diversity though high school and community activities. Examples of such activities would include:
- leadership roles in diversity groups;
- volunteering or working for community groups that promote diversity;
- assisting in diversity education;
- working with a community service agency that serves the disadvantaged; or

mentoring members of underrepresented groups in the community.
Renewable? Yes. Awards are renewable as long as the student upholds the academic and service standards outlined in the scholarship offer.
Center for Faith and Vocation (CFV) Freshmen Scholars Program
To Apply: In addition to the Application for Freshman Admission and Scholarships (or Common Application), a separate application is required. The application is available at www.butler.edu/faith-vocation/scholarships.
Application Date:
Nov. 1 (completion date) - Admission Application
Dec. 15 - CFV Scholarship Application
Award Amounts: $4,000 annually
Selection Criteria: Ideal candidates should be interested in one or more of the following -
- Service to others or social justice activism
- Interfaith programs
- Majoring or minoring in religion
- Entering a religious vocation, such as ordained ministry, theology or faith-based activism
- Reflecting about how you and others are called to lives of purpose, meaning and contribution.
Notification: The Center for Faith and Vocation Freshmen Scholars are sent letters from the Center for Faith and Vocation by mid-March.
Renewable? Yes. Awards are renewable as long as the student upholds the academic standards outlined in the scholarship offer.
Edward W. Sawyer, Disciples of Christ Scholarship
To Apply: In addition to the Application for Freshman Admission and Scholarships (or Common Application), a separate application is required. Complete and mail the application to the Office of Financial Aid.

Award Amounts: Tuition awards vary.
Selection Criteria:
- Must be a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
- Rank in the top ten percent of your high school class
- Have a composite SAT score of 1100 or higher or ACT of 24 or higher at the time of admission
- Demonstrate school, community, and church leadership
Notification: The Edward W. Sawyer, Disciples of Christ Scholarship letters are sent from the Office of Financial Aid by mid-March.
Renewable? Yes. Awards are renewable as long as the student upholds the academic standards outlined in the scholarship offer.
Notes: Applicants affiliated with denominations other than the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will not be considered for this scholarship. Please see a list of congregations at www.disciples.org.
