The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (COPHS) offers outstanding pharmacy and physician assistant programs.   As a COPHS student, you will actively participate in a rigorous mix of classroom, laboratory, and experiential learning.  In addition to gaining scientific knowledge, you will explore the many complex aspects of health and wellness, learn to build professional relationships, and provide care for patients.

Pharmacy Program

Butler has a well-established pharmacy program with a long history of developing excellent practitioners who not only provide top-quality patient care, but also become leaders in their field.  Over the last five years (2009-2013), over 99.5% of Butler pharmacy graduates passed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) on their first attempt.  

The Butler Promise sets our program apart from most other pharmacy schools by guaranteeing admission into the four-year professional phase, provided that you meet the following criteria during the two year pre-pharmacy phase:

  • Enter Butler's pre-pharmacy program as a first-semester freshman
  • Earn a Butler Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Achieve a key course GPA of at least 3.0, with final course grades at or above a C- in all key pre-pharmacy courses including general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology, first year seminar, and health sciences seminar 
  • Complete the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT), no later than January of the second pre- professional year, with a minimum composite percentile score of 55 and writing score of 3.0
  • Successfully complete a standardized in-person interview

Physician Assistant Program

Physician assistants are in high demand.  Forbes ranks Physician Assistant Studies as the number one "Best Master's Degree for Jobs."  Butler is well known for exceptional physician assistant education.  COPHS offers the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program as an undergraduate direct-admit path to the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program.  

The Butler Promiseto prospective physician assistant students guarantees direct admission into the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program if the following criteria are met:

  • Enter Butler's Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) program as a first-semester freshman
  • Achieve a cumulative Butler GPA of at least 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Earn no grades of C or lower on the first attempt of any course 
  • Complete the undergraduate BSHS program requirements within five years of enrollment
  • Have no violations of the professional conduct code

Spanish Immersion Program

The college offers a Spanish Immersion Program to students from all disciplines across campus. Butler faculty and students travel to Cuernavaca, Mexico to the Kukulcan School to interact with local families and to improve their conversational Spanish skills and enhance their healthcare vocabulary.


  • Pre-Pharmacy: (Two-year pre-professional phase with automatic entry into the four-year professional PharmD program if criteria outlined  above in the Butler Promise are achieved)
  • Pharmacy: (Four-year professional phase, Doctor of Pharmacy, PharmD)
