An Impressive Line On His Resume
Thursday, January 19, 2012
Sophomore Matt Rhinesmith opened his e-mail one morning during winter break to find a question from The New York Times’ online sports editor, Steve Reddicliffe: Did Rhinesmith want to write about the Butler men’s team for the newspaper’s college basketball blog, The Quad?
The relatively laid-back Rhinesmith described his reaction this way: “I was running around the house, ‘Mom, look!’ It was awesome. I’m still floored by the whole thing.”
His first post was published Jan. 17.
Rhinesmith, the sports multimedia editor for The Butler Collegian, has been covering the men’s basketball team since last season, when he and fellow Collegian staffer Lance Rinker blogged live during the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games. He’ll continue with the Collegian while contributing to The Times at least once a week. The Quad expects him to write about important conference games, players who distinguish themselves or have interesting stories – any good story he can tell.
In the near future, Rhinesmith said, readers will see a feature on Jackson Aldridge, the freshman guard from Australia, and a story about the team’s relative youth, since three sophomores and three freshmen have been playing significant minutes.
“I’m sure there’s always going to be stuff to write about,” he said. “And hopefully in March and April there’ll be plenty to write about.”
Rhinesmith, an electronic media major and journalism minor from Denver, Colo., said he doesn’t know whether this experience will change his career path. But he recognizes the value of contributing to The New York Times.
“Mr. Reddicliffe cracked me up,” he said. “In the first e-mail he sent me, he said, ‘Unfortunately, this isn’t a paid position.’ I said, ‘That’s totally OK. It’s something I get to put on my resume.’ I guess we’ll just have to see where it takes me.”
