Butler Ballet Concludes Its Season With 'Coppelia'

Butler Ballet concludes its 2011-2012 season with Coppélia, the revered and often-imitated story by The Nutcracker author E.T.A. Hoffman, April 20-22 in Clowes Memorial Hall.
Show times are 8 p.m. April 20 and 21, and 2 p.m. April 22. Tickets are $21.50-$28.50 for adults, $17-$23 for seniors and children 12 and under, $14-$20 for groups of 20 or more, and $10-$15 for students. Coppélia will feature the Butler Ballet Orchestra performing Léo Delibes’ lovely score accompanying Hoffman’s fanciful narrative about the eccentric (or perhaps mad) Dr. Coppelius, who decides to bring to life one of his dolls, Coppelia. Over three acts, there are lovers’ quarrels, deceptions, adversity, magic, love and marriage.
“It’s a story that’s been told thousands of ways,” said Larry Attaway, chair of Butler’s Dance Department. “The basic premise is dolls coming to life and the frailties of human beings in that process. You’re always searching for something better. It’s The Wizard of Oz again – there’s no place like home. Eventually, you realize you already have the best thing, so be happy with what you’ve got.”
The cast of nearly 100 features Sarah Grace, a freshman from Sendai, Japan, as Coppelia; Olivia Yoch (senior, Richmond, Va.) in the lead role of Swanhilda; Garrett Glassman, (senior, Gurnee, Ill.) as her besotted suitor Franz and Visiting Assistant Professor Michael J. Johnson, a veteran of Boston Ballet, as Dr. Coppelius. Faculty members Marek Cholewa, Stephan Laurent, Cynthia Pratt and Derek Reid divided the choreography duties.
Attaway said while some companies take the Dr. Coppelius character to an extreme – portraying him as really dark and somewhat evil – Johnson will be more off-kilter and slightly comedic. As for the presentation of the ballet itself, “Our approach is very traditional, including all of the appropriate ballet mime sequences – sequences of big corps dancing a Czardas and a Mazurka – the dolls bring us Spanish, Scottish and Turkish dancing just to name a few.”
Coppélia also will feature Butler Ballet’s geographically diverse student body, which comes to Indianapolis from 30 states, the District of Columbia, Panama, Puerto Rico and Japan.
