Leadership Through the Arts Forum Presents Alessandra Comini

Alessandra Comini, an authority in the fields of art history and musical iconography, will kick off the 2009-2010 Leadership Through the Arts Forum series Sept. 10 with “The Two Gustavs: Mahler, Klimt and Vienna’s Golden Decade, 1897-1907.”

Her talk, part of Butler University’s yearlong tribute to composer Gustav Mahler, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall.

The speech is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. For more information, call (317) 940-9656.

Comini’s lecture will focus on the hurdles and prickly reception imperial Vienna afforded the works of Mahler, its leading composer, and Klimt, its foremost painter. It also will explore the interlocking history of both men with the aspiring composer Alma Schindler Mahler.

“Not only is Professor Comini a pioneering scholar, she is also a brilliant and entertaining speaker,” said Peter Alexander, dean of Butler’s Jordan College of Fine Arts. “She brings her subject matter alive in ways that few can match. Her lecture will be a memorable event.”

Comini is the University Distinguished Professor of Art History Emerita at Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University. Awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor by the Republic of Austria for contributions to Germanic culture and voted “outstanding professor” 19 times by her students at Columbia and Southern Methodist universities, Comini has published eight books in the fields of art history and musical iconography, concentrating on 19th and 20th century Vienna.

Her publications include Egon Schiele’s Portraits (nominated for a National Book Award) and The Changing Image of Beethoven: A Study in Mythmaking.

Comini’s appearance is co-presented with the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
