Mission

Butler University’s conduct program, an extension of the educational mission of the University, is intended to educate students about appropriate behavior and the potential consequences of their actions and choices, thus promoting learning, personal responsibility, self-discipline, respect for others, and the understanding and support of the educational values of our community.

We help students to:

  • Understand the purpose for community standards.
  • Know how to bring their behavior into compliance with the community standards.
  • Maturely accept accountability for his/her behavior.
  • Clarify values as they relate to the behavior in question.
  • Make more positive self-directed choices that will better enable him/her to assume adult roles.
  • Consider the consequences of his/her behavior.

Ways we can serve you:

  • One-on-one or group consulting on concerns of student behavior.
  • Explain policies, processes, and assist students in preparing for conduct conversations.

The Dean of Students:

  • Is responsible for the student conduct system.
  • Consults with faculty and staff on matters of student behaviors (including classroom disruption and academic integrity).
  • Updates the University Rules of Conduct and coordinates revisions to the Student Handbook.
  • Maintains the conduct records database and student conduct files.
  • Trains and advises Appeals board members.
  • Sends parental notification of alcohol and drug violations.
  • Responds to conduct records inquiries from graduate programs and prospective employers.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws.
